  • We are all Fan-boys in one way or another (unless you are female, then your a fan-girl). We prefer NES over SMS? Anyway...we all chose our systems for one reason or another...I first got an XBOX over PS2 because of all the PS2 disc read error's I fixed...then I got a PS3 over 360 because of all the RROD...you see.. to me it is all about the systems reliability. I really don't like to pay to play online, but I wish the PS3 had as many titles as 360. O'well...get em' both and you won't have a problem...I only have a PS3...
  • You should be worried if you've ever bought anything from the PSN. Apparently the hackers got all of your credit card information as well, that's why it's still down.

If any of you have ever entered the number I'd suggest calling your bank and having that card shut down. Sony announced earlier today in their blog that it's pretty well a worst-case scenario as far as customer privacy.

Also, the "you get what you pay for" argument makes no sense. XBL has been down far more than the PSN; in fact, for 11 days straight back at the tail end of 06. That's worse in my opinion, since it's a paid service.

I'm behind them; and I'm not a fan of any system over the others. I own all 3 current gen consoles and actually play the Wii more than both the 360 and PS3, but I'm all for the idea of Sony taking this intrusion seriously and re-examining their infrastructure in order to keep my information secure; even if it IS at the cost of a few easily angered, impatient, and greedy gamers.

The 360 has better RAM for their graphics pipeline and also has 1.99x more polygons-per-second, gicing 2x the tetxures. It's not better in a 3D game world aspect at all. Can you tell me how their hardware has any more flexibility? I'd love to hear it.

    Sure.

You can throw out GPU specs all day, but you're forgetting a very important facet of how the custom built RSX works, in that it directly shares it's VRAM with the Cell, and it renders to both the local and system memory at the same time, not to mention the storage capacity on the disc media itself, which allows for the use and storage of far more textures.

There's zero evidence of that by the way, and the probability of it actually happening is extremely low. It would take quite a bit of time to extract that particular information from individual user accounts. Even so, they don't have the CVV codes associated with the numbers, which would make purchasing anything especially online impossible. It's a precautionary measure by Sony to inform their users of potential risks just in case; yet everyone has taken it to the extreme already.

I more so see it as a PR move on Sony's part to draw the attention to the "big bad hackers that stole your info" instead of apologizing for their colossal fuck up in handling their concerned user base.

Needless to say, if I was Sony, I would cancel production on the NGP right NOW. That thing is toast at this point; especially since it relies heavily on the PSN to function. Take it back to the drawing board. People aren't going to jumping overboard to buy this thing any time soon after this mess.

1st off, not many games use anywhere near the dual-layered DVD size of 9.6 GB. Blue-Ray is not even a factor in making games today. Any more content on 360 can come out on one disk, or be downloaded and added on to the HDD. Blu-Ray isn't that amazing at all.

2nd off, The cell shares it's RAM with the VRAM. Effectively halfing the CPU and RAM speeds! Unless it's dual-ported, it's NOT an advantage.

And when Sony takes down PSN and then doesn't say why, there's been a breach of security. A MAJOR one. I hope they find the guys that stole that information. Too bad it probably wasn't anon, because then finding those guys would be easy.
  • I didn't even realize PSN was down until now. However, now that I do the reason it's down, Sony having lost a bunch of my personal data I wish they never stored to begin with to random crooks.

Is cause to say "why the hell did I go with Sony".

Really it's because the xboxes charges you a montly / yearly fee and didn't come with wifi so it would be more expensive and I thought that was ridiculous (and because Sony officially supports linux users! I always love to support companies that support linux users, yay!).

That is no reason to worry.  Credit card fraud protection is extremely effective.

I believe them killing the other OS support is what really got the hacking ball rolling...

This is not true.  I have made many, many online purchases that did not require a CVV code.  Plenty of merchants require it, to cover their ass, but it's not 100% necessary to complete a purchase.

No need to worry, but check your statements and inform your bank.  It's no biggy, changing all the passwords on everything I've ever used was more bother

  • Yeah just cancel whatever card was on there, get a new one with a different number, and if you use their online shit change that password too just to be super safe. That's your best bet, and if you were dumb enough to use a debit card, start praying.

They're getting baked because large ego man-children are taking cheap shots pissy over the OtherOS much a do about nothing, and then crossing the so called line busting GeoHot and wanting web info handed over on who downloaded the PS3 keys to the front door from there. Some people can't handle being challenged when they know they're wrong and this is the fallout. It shows how slimy and immature they are targeting the consumers and not the company as most will either never notice, not give a crap, and likely won't have an issue and if they do they'll call the credit card people and get it revoked and sorted. It's just a stupid inconvenience more than anything and only those who are totally oblivious to reality should maybe have an issue.
  • I have actually starting the getting a but used to not having PSN. But i will play as soon as it get back up again though. Kinda miss playing Killzone 3 and Motorstorm Apocalypse online. Luckily the weather has been nice, so i have been spending some more time outside

Personally i'm not sure that this PSN hack is related to the OtherOS and
GeoHot lawsuit. Doing such a hack could probably lead to many many years behind bars and/or HUGE fines if the hacker(s) get caught. That seems like a
huge risk to take just to "get back at Sony". But who knows. I hope
that they announce if the person(s) who did this hack get caught.
  • Why not? Seems a bit too coincidental after Sony removing the hackers play tools of OtherOS which pissed em off, then busting Hotz which really did annoyed them, and then slapping the icing on it getting info of those who downloaded his keys to the front door would be 3 fine reasons for a pack of jerks to have plenty of reason to have it as an excuse.

I'm with you, I'll be having a shot (and I don't drink) and a good laugh when these/any of these bastards end up going to jail for it.

I'm skeptical that any of that would make a bunch of whiny kids cross the line of committing felonies that cannot be ignored.

Then again, maybe they don't have an adequate appreciation of consequence.

    Are you serious?

All this talk about debit cards, has anybody ever had a fraudulent charge on their debit card?

I have, and it was just as easy to take care of as if it were on a credit card.

    This isn't 1990 anymore.

If you used a debit card, relax, just monitor the transactions. No big deal.

Sure you will, just like I'll be having a shot when Sony is held accountable for their fraud and liquid gold shoots out of my butt.

Don't hold you're breath, I'd bet they are somewhere out of legal reach selling all the info they got to Microsoft and Nintendo

You do realize that just labelling random people you have no info on "whiny kids" doesn't really have an effect on either their competence or motivations (or even their age) right?

While debit card protections are better than they used to be, they are not on par with credit card protections, and debit card fraud can cause real headaches to deal with (can overdraft your account and cause a cascade of pain-in-the-ass), whereas credit card fraud causes absolutely no headache beyond a phone call.

  • I'm leaning on the usual, it's a lack of knowledge or giving a shit about the consequences. Typically if you got an ego and power trip riding that high you likely feel you're invincible and not going to be caught.

Maybe something got lost in translation from Canadian to American English, but your reply doesn't make sense.

I'm leaning towards a third party seizing on the opportunity to use the "hackers" making a big public stink as cover.  Or using whatever holes in Sony's system had been published to get in before they could be closed, and the timelines just happen to line up.

We're not talking about basic DNS attacks or any of that nuisance stuff.

When people hack into corporate systems and steal this sort of information, it ends in somebody going to jail, if they're doing it from the developed world.

Its called Advanced Persistent Threats APT and it is the new wave of attack vectors on the Internet.  Do some research folks you will shit your pants.

    - Arch I cracked up when I read your statement about writing a complete grammatical sentence.

No, it just means I wouldn't assume the whiny kids wouldn't cross the line.

    Fair enough.

This isn't going to end well for them, though, if they're actually the ones who did it.

As arch_8ngel already mentioned, i just think that this seems to be too much to risk just to show Sony a lesson. I will not rule it completely out this, it might very well be the case. But if someone risk doing something like this PSN hack just to get back at Sony for OtherOS and the GeoHot lawusit, then that is a incredible big risk to take in my opinion. But again, it might be possible that someone actually did this.

I also wonder if this PSN hack has any relation to the Epsilon hack that happened a few weeks ago, if it is the same guy(s) who are behind it or if it is just a coincidence that these two hacks happened fairly close to eachother in time.

  • I don't know any kids that could hack a huge database by Sony. This isn't anon, it's not related at all, if you know that anon isn't that big of threat you'd put 2+2 together. This is a completely different attack not related to the Other OS stuff that's going around right now. This is just somebody wanting to steal information. They did this to Nintendo and the Wii, and it wasn't because of Homebrew blockading!

ETA: This isn't the doing of those anon kids. You don't just fall into hacking a database like Sony's, like they do and their site pinging.

This is exactly right. Much as I'd like to wave my pitchfork and torch at Anon, this was  something far more sophisticated than they would try to pull off. This goes beyond "Doing it for the lulz". I do think the hackers took the opportunity to perpetrate the hack when they did,  because Anon brought attention to themselves and declared war on Sony, so that they could use Anon as a scapegoat but I really doubt that Anonymous was actually behind it.

Why does everyone talk about "anon" like it's a real group?  It's just some moron(s?) who take credit for stuff.  We could easily see something saying "now you know what it's like messing with anon Sony" or whatever and it would mean nothing like always.
