Metroid passwords are ridiculous

I haven't played the NES version of Metroid for many, many years. I decided to get back into it today. I explored everything I could in the main section and headed to Brinstar (I believe). I was getting ready to quit anyway, so I sloppily explored a bit more before dying.

I couldn't believe the password I saw. I understand there is a lot of keep track of, but this is extreme. 24 characters, including upper and lowercase letters. It also includes both 0 and O, laying a trap for the unsuspecting. I triple-checked my password to ensure I didn't just waste all that progress.

I know it isn't the worst password. I recall games with passwords which coated the screen. Was it Legacy of the Wizard? Faxanadu? Might and Magic? But maybe Nintendo should have made a slightly longer password in exchange for only using capital letters and no zeroes.

  • Megaman passwords are epic, all I have to say about this!
  • I always write a slash through the "0" zero and put two dots above lower case letters like they did with Guardian Legend. That helps limit the errors from misreading the password you wrote down. I guess now a days you could just take a digital picture of the screen to be extra sure
  • JUSTIN BAILEY
    ------ ------

Then all you need to do is get the energy pack, ice gun, and then see some Samus in a bikini!

  • i though i was the only one who knew that
  • It was in a book in the late 80s.
  • I do put a slash through the zeroes, but I never considered the dots for lowercase.

It appears that JUSTIN BAILEY is simply a random password that happens to give almost all of the items.

On a related note, Samus probably has the flattest female ass in all of videogaming.

    Nothing flat about Samus....

    Megaman passwords ARE awesome!
  • Well you know Faxanadu you mentioned is worse as the font used makes some letters and numbers a guess which they are, at least Metroid is readable clearly. Though in all fairness, Nintendo deserves a kick to the nuts for using them as the JP version were on FDS disks and had 3 save spots. Guess they just didn't want to drop the dollar for a battery waiting for Zelda.
  • Gotta love game passwords
  • I checked the manual again, and I realized I am actually in Kraid's hideout, not Brinstar. I was getting my ass kicked, so I went back out and headed to what I thought was Ridley's hideout. In reality, it was Norfair! I have been drawing my own map, which has been helpful, but probably not required. It allows me to see what areas I have explored already, but I can't say that I have felt too lost.

I found the Screw Attack and Jump Boots. I also found Ridley's hideout, but I bailed out instantly. I'm going to explore the rest of Norfair first, although from my map, it looks like there is only one corridor remaining.

I found an area with lava that looked suspicious. So I dove into the lava and went to the left. Samus went off the screen and wouldn't return. When I moved right, the screen scrolled to the right, but Samus was invisible. I tried jumping and laying bombs, but no Samus. I thought I might be doomed to sit there and wait for death. I decided to try moving to the left again. After a few seconds, Samus appeared on the screen from the right side! Weird.
  • i have a binder for mm passwords which at one time had a red and a blue pencil crayon tied to it
  • Worst password I met so far is River City Ransom's. Good thing is that you don't really need it. But it's 54 characters long, number and letter, lowercase and uppercase.

I never got the ones I wrote down to work, even after double checking the damn thing.
  • I used to draw my own maps for this game on graph paper. The absolute worst, was getting these passwords, mixed up with the ones for Kid Icarus. They look identical! Meeemmmm-rieeeees.....of the way we weeerree!

You must not have played Other M. That had to be the best part of the game.

If you need a better map for this game you can find one I made from screen shots at:

Really? I haven't gotten that far yet, I think. Or I forgot it. Huh. Shows you how much I know.

    this.
  • Ugh beat me to it. I've been trying to remember what the hell the other game was that drove me up the wall worse than Faxanadu. I guess the fact is when I bother with RCR anymore I try and do it while I'm sitting there so I forgot about that evil password system.
