I'm getting an enlargement.

My buddy is giving me his 55 inch rear projection TV, a huge step up from the 36 inch CRT I use now. I figure due to the larger screen it would be in my interest to upgrade to S-Video cables for my Super Famicom.
So there is several choices on Ebay, Monster Cables, Innovation Cables, Genuine Nintendo Cables or generic cables.
Is there really a difference that's worth spending the 25 bucks for Monster or should I just stick with whatever is the cheapest.

  • Wow, saw the thread topic and I was wondering if this would have been some Ron Jeremy ExtenZe ad or something needing to be on WebMD.com for sure.

Seriously though, monster is nice I guess since they're supposedly really well shielded and can do better with the gold plating, but the thing is, how the hell is it going to really matter much with the Nintendo? OR the system either? Neither one of them have gold plated jacks, and the interior I doubt really do either. You're probably best with just some middle of the road thing (not monster, and not a beater piece of crap with zero shielding at all) and it should be fine. Odds are you wouldn't get interference anyways.

Someone on here was selling a SNES sealed up legit s-video cable from Nintendo, wish I could remember who it was.

    I believe it was Limbofunk
  • Thanks for the heads up I checked out Limbofunk's auction I would love it but I wouldn't be able to break it open if its sealed, besides it sold.
  • That's a shame it's gone, I'd so break it open as that's what it's good for -- new out of box top quality snes video output.
  • Unless you also plan on doing modern 720p gaming, your existing CRT will be vastly superior for SNES and earlier gaming.

Also note that 55" is actually only 45" in 4:3 mode.

The only reason I decided to take the TV is because its an old Rear Projection, its 4:3 not wide. The nice thing is it was top of the line apparently back in the day and the picture is very nice and clear. It also has component RGB inputs so I may be modding one of my spare SNES consoles soon for that. If the NES RGB mod wasn't so expensive I would be all over that too.
  • I really wouldn't bother with the RGB mod. The color palette is not the same and some games just flat out refuse to work. Although if you do the mod, I recommend to do it on a AV famicom. Why AV Famicom? The main problem with this mod is jail bars being seen due to increased clarity. AV famicom does not have jail bars, thus no jail bars.

As for RGB, you can just get a scart cable for your super famicom+CSY2100 RGB to YUV converter.

    Best of luck.
  • With regards to the cables, Monster generally uses a slightly larger gauge of wire, hence the higher price. For 16 bit and s-video, you really won't notice a difference between Monster and any other decent cable.
  • That is true for the most part. I have the S-video GameCube monster ones.and they are indeed thick.

The one thing you have to watch out for are fake s-video cables. These cables do not use true luma and chroma. Consequently, you get a nice grid like pattern, especially on the Nintendo 64. On a SNES, the cheaper quality ones can create diagonal patterns.
