TMNT a Spirtual successor to Getsu Fuma Den?

I have both games, just recently having recently acquired Getsu Fuma Den, and could not help but notice upon my first play through some striking game play similarities and even some of the same sound effects. It makes me wonder if Konami simply retooled Getsu Fuma Den into TMNT or something similar. To me they at least seem to run on the same engine. Here are some game play vids of both. What do you guys think?

  • The gameplay and sounds do look very similar. Probably it's something like what Capcom did with some of its NES games (Megamans, Darkwing Duck, etc).

I've noticed this too with the Capcom games. I haven't played Getsu Fuma Den in a looong time, and I haven't noticed this actually. Definitely the same sound effects, and the engine does look really similar now that you mention it. Both games are pretty unique though as far as game play in general and the art goes though, so it's not a problem to me! Good observation, Matt.
  • Well it's not as blatant as the retooling of a little ninja game into Yo Noid by Capcom, but I think what you have here is a reused game engine and play mechanic of the famicom game re-used for Leonardo on TMNT (oh and the sound effects too.)
  • getsu fuuma den was the same 'engine' that ran turtles, so yes, you can sort of liken them together. maybe simliar in the way that makai island and ghosts and goblins sort of shared some of the same aspects.

getsu fuuma den is a game that i consider a very important part of famicom/nes history, without that game, turtles wouldnt have been the hellstorm that it was. i feel like the music from that game is so important, but nobody on my side of the world probably recognizes it at all. the gameplay left a little to be desired, but at least it wasnt as hellish as turtles was at times.
  • Funny I always thought it was just like link

The music is fantastic in that game and is one of my favorite aspects. The game itself overall is just plain awesome.

I definitely see that similarity as well
  • It's funny now that you mention it, of course it's the same engine and all, but I could never get into Turtles, and I love Getsu Fuuma Den. Maybe I should give Turtles another try.
  • Love Getsu Fuuma Den, and especially the music. I also love any excuse to post this video of someone covering it on electric guitar:

    That is pretty damn sweet!
  • Yeah, definitely looks like a similar engine, but it looks like enough is done, er.. differently.. to be different enough. That map screen and the overall pace of the game especially.
