Nintendoage contest presents: Robocop 2

  • ^^ Yeah I did pretty much the same thing. Three million was quite easy this way, but it was kind of like point racking, kind of felt like I was cheating even though it seemed to be within the rules of the contest. So I probably won't submit a score unless I make points by going Stage 1, stage 2, ect. See pic below.

    (This is not my submission)

  • I thought the game didn't let you go to the shooting range more than 2 times in the whole game (I thought it made you lose after that). Anyways, it's ok for me to leave out the shooting range, I'm not using that to score more points.

No 'second chance' at the shooting range.

    Sorry no can do.

Seriously though...someone better hurry and make a decision on the rules for this silly game. It's Thursday already.

Yeah, it does only let you do it twice, after that you merely get sent back to the previous stage. The only penalty is getting set back once again. But I guess if you already had failed twice, they are basically forcing you to find the sewer access so as to get the Nuke through the stage itself, as well as arresting enough guys, no more chances at the firing range because they want you to get better at it through normal means of the stage.

So much as I don't like the whole idea of point racking, already half the week is gone, rules were set, some already put time and effort into their scores, even if done by looping back around to the first stage again, and again, nothing in the rules said there was anything wrong with this method.

Too late to change, just going to have to make sure in the future to stress that there should be no point racking: no finding a safe spot to stand in or going back and forth and continuously killing respawning enemies (if the game has a timer there could be some allowance for this, so long as there's not a way to keep resetting it), and no looping back to previous stage(s) just to play an easy part again so as to easily build up score, because with either of these meothds, anyone could do those with very little difficulty, only thing against you would be monotony of repetitiveness. What else am I missing? Anyway, point racking by any method that doesn't keep you progressing forward at all times towards the end of the game should be noted as forbidden in all future games held, this'll keep the challenge up and keep scores fair.

  • To me that's clear, there's no debate about if it's too late or not.

No looping stages, final. Anybody that put effort into this technique just need to get back to it and go forward into the game.

That's not the first time we need to adjust that kind of rule late in the week. Otherwise, that's just a silly 1st stage looping contest, it doesn't take a genius to figure out this is not fair playing.

    Agreed peep?
There's still 4 days to go to this contest, so there's plenty of time to record another score until then.

Edit: Also, this is showing us once again that the rules must be set correctly before picking up a contest.

I don't want to accuse anyone seriously for this, but, Jorge should have thought about this when suggesting this contest since he knows this game so well, and, Jeremy should have tested the game to be sure the rules are correct. Otherwise, it's normal that players only figure this out later in the week.

Yes you're right, I should have. The problem is that I honestly thought it was 2 rounds of shooting range and then you lose. I even thought that going to the shooting range was going to be a legit strategy, when I set the rules. Sorry about that, I think I didn't remember that mechanic very well.

  • Yeah, it is an odd mechanic, I understand fully how you thought it differently. I too thought that it was twice at the shooting range and then you lose.
  • I agree that there should be no looping of stages in this game. If we allow stage looping, this will turn into a point racking contest as opposed to a contest of skill. We still have 4 days to go with this contest and there's still plenty of time to submit scores. It's not like we are making this rule change on Sunday afternoon at 3 PM.

Ya, whats with that. How come you never play with us dude?
  • O boy is this going to create a whole other fight about why I dont play,,, I just dont have the time,, I'm spending alot of my time in school,, its almost summer so when I have some free time ill play a little bit but if this is gonna turn into a fight like the prizes why I dont play theres your answer

    Jeremy

  • Score updated, betcha you can't beat this one.
  • Awesome! You really are good at this game. No way I'm going to get close to that score. I might be able to play some tomorrow, but not sure yet, regardless I really do think you have this one, I'll be really surprised if anyone else could top it. It is possible of coarse.
  • I didn't have so many NES games in my childhood, so I specialized in this, Ninja Gaiden and a few others
  • Very minor update in my score. I seem to be doing worst at this game now, though I did find another bonus area, but it was a friggin' slide puzzle, urgh, never been good at those.
  • Another, slightly higher score update, its not much, but at least I finally made it up to stage 6, actually got there twice in a row, which is good, I'm getting better. But I need to start doing better at completing bonus areas if I want higher points.
  • ^^that's true, the bonus areas are great for points. I actually did one for 2 million points last time (it's the one with the numbers), but got killed immediately afterwards, so I got just below my highest score... but I was like 3 levels before.
  • The slide puzzle seems to be the same every time, how its scrabbled up, so if I could've remembered the sequence I could've gotten it, but too late now, go to work in a couple hours, won't be home til the contest is over. So my score stands as is, eh, may not be close to your's, but its a good score anyway given how little I've been able to play it. And I enjoyed the game again since I last played it years ago, so that's good.
  • Yes, you really improved, yours is a good score.
  • 7,082,800

    Here we go.
  • Nice scores by everyone so far. I'll be submitting mine later tonight. Don't worry, mine isn't going to be that impressive
  • 1,161,700

Getting a little better at this game.  I might be able to do a little better now that I'm getting the hang of it.

Oh yeah, and this scowling pic of Robocop perfectly expresses my frustrations with this game.

  • edit: new score below
  • Good god those are some high frickin' scores! Nice to see a game like this get so much attention, certainly not an easy game to get used to, but you guys are getting through almost the entire game without dying. Very impressive.
  • slight update to my score.

  • 7,550,100

Finished game with no deaths, no second chance shooting range.

  • ^You beat this with 1 life? Now THAT'S impressive. Congrats Mog
  • ROBOCOP 2 RESULTS

    1st: 7,550,100 - MrMiniMog +10 points

    2nd: 7,082,800 - guillavoie +8 points

    3rd: 5,192,500 - buttheadrulesagain +6 points

    4th: 1,345,800 - Miss Clawful +4 points

    5th: 1,161,700 - bimmy_lee +2 points

Just a note, since nearly all of us agreed that looping stages by going to the firing range was forbidden, no scores were considered in which a stage was looped.
  • Gee, I knew this would happen. Congrats Mog and guill!
  • Thanks man!

That was one nasty game, I'm surprised someone 1-lifed it with all bonuses.
  •

Me too, that's just, well, awesome.

I didn't realize it had been so long since I last played this game, way back in 2003, and the best I could do then was 13 deaths. It is one of the tougher games on the NES, but at least it has infinite continues, the one thing keeping it from being overly difficult to actually finish, unlike a similar game, Darkman which I was never able to beat.

    Robocop 2
    09/21/03
1st game (1st time beating it): beat it, died seemingly hundreds of times
    09/23/03
2nd game: beat it with 9 continues used
3rd game: beat it, but I got so wrapped up in it that I forgot to keep record
4th game: beat it with 13 deaths / 2 continues used
