I forgot how cool of a game Super Mario World was

So I haven't played this game in a good 15 years.  I lent it to a high school girlfriend and never got it back after we broke up (go figure).   I got it again recently when i bought a lot of SNES games.  I started playing it again the other day and it is easily my favorite Mario game.

I'm sure I'm not alone in that.   Anyway, I just felt like giving props to a great game.

  • it's good....go re-live Mario 64....I'm in the middle of that one now, and was amazed all i had forgotten.

  • Most-likely my favorite in the series, too. There's just something about it.. Either the colorful visuals, the precise controls, the clever level design, the sheer amount of variety and secrets, I don't know.. One thing is for certain: it's an awesome Mario game!
  • i'll probably hit that up after SMW. i'm pwning it pretty quickly and finding all the secrets too. (no internet assistance yet either)
  • Super Mario World is by far my all time favorite game. It has all the qualities of a great platformer and it is a Mario game so that makes it that much better. Sorry, that is all I can come up with right now, I am pretty buzzed on Beale Street and I have been here about 8 hours...go me.
  • We to love this game...even though SMB3 was a large improvement in the series....SMW took a much larger step...So much fun!!
  • Yeah, SMW is awesome. It took me like 10 years to finally figure out how to access all of the secret areas without looking online or in a guide. The one that goes down from butter bridge (i think that's the name) was my favorite one, even though I hate water levels
  • Yeah, i stumbled across the butter bridge one. i am having a problem on the chocolate level (one of the levels there) in finding the secret. I'll figure it out.
  • It is good, but my favorite is the 3rd, and then the second, and then the first.
  • I'm not surprised it and SMB3 are a toss up to me as the best one ever. Either way looking at SMB5(DS) and 6(Wii) sadly the series went a bit downhill into lame trick jumps, lacking of levels, and some fairly lame powerups with an overall lesser sense of wonder and 'what is next' feeling too.

I got that SNES the day it came out. I played that game 2 weeks solid and 96*'d that thing (100%) and it was a great ride. I loved when I accidentally left the special world up and had to go to the can, came back and then it rolled into classic mario using steel drums and stuff as I just sat and listened for a long time eating that up.

I often wonder if the games are really "going downhill", as subjective as that is, or whether we, as an audience, are just changing our expectations as we grow older?  I mean, it takes a lot more to impress me nowadays than it did when I was a kid, playing Mario.  Hell, the box art alone made me giddy, and I just took it all in.  You know what I mean?  Maybe the "lesser sense of wonder" that I feel as well has nothing to do with Nintendo's performance but our expectations having grown up with these games.

  • I've also picked it up again recently. I'm up to the beginning of the forest of illusions with everything found so far with no internet help. Its been a long time since I've played. I got it and mortal kombat 3 when I first bought my super nes back in 1997. It is the game that I have beaten the most times never gets old to me.
  • SMW is definitely one of the best games ever made. I've never even fully completed it, but it's my favorite of the entire SMB series (including the NSMB games).
  • Alder I know what you are saying but seriously they have. Take the DS game. Unlike previous Mario titles it has just 6 worlds if I recall, and worse, if you don't get the micro mushroom and take the halfass under the boss way out, you lose access to 2 full worlds of the game. The micro thing isn't all that fun or practical, the mega mushroom is window dressing and as cool as it is has about as much use as a kuribo shoe. Beyond that well, the koopa shell suit was the only decent thing added aside from some 3D mario moves (butt stomp and flips.) The Wii game while surely longer and bringing the koopa brats back was a step back in the right direction but again some new suits that were lame, bring backs from the DS and stuff too, and I have no idea why but I got bored with it in world 4 and haven't gone back since maybe a month after it came out and I've never put down a 2D mario title...ever.
  • I haven't played Super Mario Bros X, is it as good as it looks in the videos?

It's just his opinion.  I personally think Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the best Mario game I've ever played.  But yes, everyone already knows that New Super Mario Bros on DS was just mediocre because the difficulty was pathetic and way too easy.

And New Super Mario Bros on Wii is completely badass and a must have for those of you who need games to play with your significant other.  Difficulty is just right and you can play co-op through the levels.

  • I was speaking of the 2D mario stuff, I don't include the 3D games as part of the 'Super Mario Bros' line as they are their own thing.
  • I am also currently playing through Super Mario World. The experience is a little pale for me this time. I believe this is due me having recently played through the GBA version. Since the GBA version requires you to get five dragon coins in each level to 100% the game, I played through many of the levels over and over. It is a strange feeling to play the SNES version, where the only goal is to get to the end of the level. No collecting of anything required.

This feeling exacerbated by the fact that I have been playing through Yoshi's Island. I am currently at the final level. This game introduces a sort of paranoia, where you feel you must grab every coin and explore every nook for hidden items. I have 100% every level up to this point, and the balance of hidden items and paths is almost perfect. Nothing is too hard nor too easy to discover. What a great and challenging game. I will be sad when it is over.
  • I too thought the DS Mario's are going / went downhill. Even NSMB Wii was rather bland for me.

Don't get me wrong though, SM Galaxy 1 and 2 were amazing. Only thing that I did not like about them was they were too straightforward and guided. I hope they were more like SM 64 were you had to find your own direction.

SMW is awesome. Easily the best in the series along with SMB3.
  • To anyone who is bored with Super Mario World, try the following to make things more challenging:

    1. Play through without getting any switches.

    2. Play through without getting any power ups. (Stay small.)

    3. Play through with the controller upside-down.
  • My original cart finally lost it's save game =( . Time to boot up a new one.
  • See Zing that right there is the one thing I absolutely 100% hate they added into the Mario games from the GBA forward on the side scrollers...lame ass collection and ranking. Why can I not just enjoy the game and at most get a little gold star on the save game if I do ever stage? Now they want to do suicide coins in weird spots you can die to get or get super lucky and nail not dying...it's dumb. I think even that is partly why (not just mario) I enjoy the older stuff...it's about the ride, not a bunch of lame fetch quests and other aggravation as they don't add fun to the game, just length it doesn't need.
  • At least they didn't change the locations of the dragon coins in the GBA version.

The worst offender was the first Super Mario Advance, since they added red coins to each level. I completed the game, but I never did collect all of those coins. Between that and the idiotic voices they added to every move, I couldn't tolerate it any longer. I never want to hear that "lucky" or "just what I needed" voice ever again.

I think the battery in mine was even worse, it wouldn't hold a save for more than half a year. It was always fun beating the levels all over again though, if that didn't happen I might have only played through it once which wouldn't be as fun.
  • I just finished the game without really trying. I stumbled across the shortcut via Star Road. One weird thing I noticed is that the Princess is twice as big as Mario (if you are normal size Mario).

For whatever reason, the Forest level with all the enemies in bubbles gave me a hell of a time.

I also found a "cheat" of sorts. If you are on a level with fireballs or falling spikes, you can trigger them early by pressing the R button to scroll the screen over. These items seem to be triggered based on where they are on the screen without any relation to Mario. So the spikes will fall before you even get close.
  • Hmm, I thought that once you beat the game, you could save at anytime. That was the only reason I bothered to go for Bowser this early! I guess not.

  • I actually went back and played through this about a month ago. Hands down my favorite Mario platformer of all time. The level design, controls, items....everything is just perfect. I have such a good time when I play this game, it's so well done. So many hidden things to do and complete...the replay value is endless in my opinion. Nintendo outdid themselves with this one.

Forest of Illusions is definitely my favorite world!
  • Nice ending pic, but that save anywhere unlock when finished I think started with the GBA versions, if not, definitely the DS title.
