Speaking of Mortal Kombat

I've been playing the first Mortal Kombat off and on for about two weeks. I haven't had much play time overall, but I feel like I'm not making progress in how to play it. I like using Sub-Zero, and know his moves and awesome fatality, but I haven't been able to get further than the second endurance fight. I figured I could hit some of you up for some tips maybe. Since I've never really been that good at fighting games, I need some help! haha Should I try to work blocking more often into my fighting style? I'm not sure.

Comments

  • Blocking would help, perhaps as habit hold back unless you're in to either pressing an attack hard or while dailing a move in. The game can get pretty nasty from that part up to the end.
  • Blocking is mandatory in most fighting games.. that is, if you want to get anywhere. It's especially useful in MK.

With Scorpion or Sub-Zero, spam their projectile special moves. The AI is pretty dumb in the first MK and they generally walk right into them. Obviously, make sure you uppercut them every time, and afterward, with Sub-Zero, you may be able to get a free ground slide in after one (I'm pretty sure you can... I know you can in MKII and MK3).
  • I use block heavily, but it's easier to be thrown that way. It's a timing game, and use the cross-ups all you can. The AI has trouble with the cross-ups (where you jump over and land a kick/punch from the opposite side). I find the SNES a better translation of the game, but the fatalities are butt! Plus, I haven't played mine in eons, but I don't think the 1st Genesis MK is 6-button controller enabled. I can't remember, but a 6 button gives ya a better angle as well.
  • I don't block 15% of the time

Yeah, it's six-button friendly. I think you might have to enable it in the options menu though.

Totally agree on the cross-ups, I forgot about those. Extremely useful!

  • I just mash the buttons until I win.

Then get ready to pass yer controller around the living room, MrMiniMog! I take out button mashers with leg sweeps......NEXT!!
  • You're playing it on the wrong platform. Needs to be played on an arcade machine with MK's 5 button layout.
  • That's how I played it, arcade, well learned it there, then got the neutered SNES game for home. My brother had the genesis, but I found some of the SNES kills more entertaining (mostly Subzero's which ended up being in MK2 I think as a kill.) I'm sure I'd get destroyed today but back in 1991-2 I could school almost anyone at it and the AI at whatever level, except not so steadily with Kano never liked that idiot. The AI could get dumb in MK1, you could come in with a hard kick, follow with instant dialed in ice, then a nasty uppercut and chase it with a slide as they try to get up and it's a lot of health in the toilet.
  • I may be thinking MK2, but freeze the ground so they slip then uppercut them. Rinse and repeat.

I challenge thee, good sir, to a friendly test of skills......lolz~ Kano Rocks! I be rippin them hearts out from the back side!
**on another note...I stand corrected. This thread urged me to bust out the 1st MK on both Genesis, and the SNES.  Cross-ups, weren't implemented until MKII. I've been tryin and tryin! My conclusion, is that neither one of these games hit a home console, with a proper translation. The SNES is close, graphics-wise, but both felt insanely choppy...I think back in the day, I was just to stoked to be playin MK at home, I  didn't realize. But I am certain, MKII made the cut on SNES, almost perfect, in terms of looks and controls, fatalities, and secrets.

In a quick sum up Roth...It's not you...it's the game! Play ya some MKII, and you'll see how the games are supposed to be, as I stand corrected again, BUTTON MASHING totally works on the 1st, 2 home versions!
  • Not much of a challenge unless you want to time machine your ass 20 years into the past as I don't play MK anymore. I just got that portable genesis thing, so I'll have to give it a try.
  • I spam the jump kick like there is no tomorrow.
  • Long distance jump kicks and maximum reach roundhouses will do most of the work for you in the arcade version.
  • I usually Block when the AI does a special move and When you uppercut I recommend to do a Jump kick next.
  • Jump backwards, then jump forwards and kick. Repeat.

Agreed! Would like to own a MK arcade someday when I have the extra room for it.
  • Genesis version felt very sloppy and loose. It's hard to imagine until you have compared to the SNES. The SNES version was super tight and felt more deliberate. The Genesis version was kind of floaty, and the characters were far too small. This changed the gameplay significantly.
