I know this isn't sega age but...

I saw this little gem of a device that randomly goes by a few names at Frys yesterday and almost bought, now I think I have to go back and get it.

Basically it's $40, you get this handheld, GOAC (genesis on a chip) setup.  Built in rechargeable battery core to it, good solid screen and speaker and it's 6 button.  Thing is default it has 20 games, now not all that interesting right?  Seems after doing some searching I found this great article breaking it down entirely: http://tgigreeny.com/2011/02/11/gamesretrotech-review-mega-drive-ultimate-arcade-portable/

It appears the system is meant to be used for gray area activity, they just don't market it as such, just that will run more games in the future using the SD slot.  Thing is, that curious individual went and dropped a bunch of BIN files (aka Genesis/Mega Drive ROMS) he had lying around on there and guess what, they worked.  Seems the only bad part is, even with SD card, there's no possibility of saving games (boo for RPG lovers.)

I just figured I'd throw this out there as information, but also curious if anyone here has seen one before or tried it as i'm curious if it really is worth it or not.

  • Its out for some years now. It works with emulation, so its not the real deal. You will notice differences in speed and sound. Some games will run just fine, others will be unplayable.

For a good price, I would say go for it. But I dont think that $40 its good.

You can find more information on the net, even video reviews. Example: http://www.dascheap.com/portable-genesis-w-sd-card-slot-gopher-portable-genesis-system-pal-compatible.html
  • Are you truly certain it is an emulator in there? All the reviews I've hit so far said it's a chip in there, but with minimal parts which is why it can't handle games that save. $40 is very good, not sure why you don't agree. I picked it up and for all that it offers so far it's a great price since you can load anything to it (the older versions without the SD are a rip though.)
  • It probably doesn't handle saves since it was made cheaply without the compatibility. The differences in speed and sound are possibly from it being set to PAL standardly, to be compatible with more games. As for the compatability issues, any *OAC system will have them, but this looks to be okay with compatibility. At least the duty cycles aren't switched like those crap NES ones.

Goes to show how you know, it isn't certain "tones." Please look into what you talk about before you say it. Don't want people getting told the wrong things.
  • I've tried a few dozen games so far and I haven't hit any irregular speed issues, and the audio much like the NOAC stuff is mostly right but some tones are off. I decided to experiment with the save data on Wonderboy 6 and all it did was parse the save as if it existed, but on reboot it had no option to load so at least mine is perhaps newer and doesn't tank. I think my original guess was that Sega was ok to license it, ok to quietly allow the SD card to run bare .BIN format roms, but just not so clearly state it on the box. With this I think they didn't want people being able to use the device for weird hacking means or something so writing back to the SD card was blocked.

I've tried various stuff like Young Indy, Streets of Rage 1-3, Vectorman(graphical glitching, bad which 2 does too), Aladdin, around 5 other games starting in A, Street Fighter 2 CE, and Castlevania. Anything I've thrown at it works or goofs as I stated it. I haven't tried the TV output yet, but so far I'm impressed with this thing and it does have color changing lights to warn when the battery is charging (red), charged (green), and a front facing panic button when it's almost out. D-pad is very responsive but it is a bit of a rocker so you got to be careful, and the 6 face buttons work great.
  • cool...i might look into one o these....nuttin like Moonwalker on the go!
  • Did you post this over on SA? You will get more interest/info on there since it is only a Sega brand device. I am sure the guys over there would love to hear about it.
