Final Fantasy II Repro - minor graphical glitching

Long story short, when I'm in a battle, character #1 has one of his tiles turn into a white square every now and then as the battle goes on. Also, whenever the little white glove appears, it's bottom left tile glitches into a gray square with a diagonal line through it.

Is this normal for FFII reproduction carts? Or is mine screwing up? I got this cart from Leon at NES Reproductions.com.

Comments

  • Is it 1+2 on the same cart? Although just 2 uses a normal SNROM board and shouldn't have any problems.
  • No, just the second game.

Also, it's the prototype US translation, not the fan translated version. I know because there's lots of bad grammar in my cart.
  • My prototype translation repro doen't do anything like you describe. My copy works perfect. Seems you must have a bad ROM, or maybe some wiring isn't as it should be? Cold solder joint or something.
  • I should take a picture. Direct capture screenshot.

The graphical problems don't inhibit gameplay, nor do they interfere with saving. Both seem to work as they should. Just mildly annoying, that's all. It seems moving the NES cart around while the NES is turned on affects the glitches, but I assure you my NES works perfectly. No other game of mine has such problems, even my other Repro cart, Earth Bound.
  • If you could a board pic would be nice, but taing apart a repro with possibly bad solder connections might be bad.
  • It might be some problems with the wiring inside the cart. I got a Final Fantasy III fan-translation repro that glitched up, and the glitches would change a little bit if I wiggled/reinserted the cart. Turned out to be a loose wire that came off at some point. I'm not sure though, just what I've experienced.
  • My preferred capture card isn't behaving for me, so here's a crappy direct capture. It's not the exact issues I was having as above, but it's certainly similar.

My save disappeared (the battery still works though), so I had to start a new file. I gave my team new names this time and strangely enough, I'm having different graphical problems now. So far, in the short couple minutes I played once again, I only came across one bad bit of graphics. My two old GFX problems don't show up anymore.

I am reasonably good with soldering, just not microscopic soldering like what NES repro guys have to put up with. I need a thinner tip for my iron...
  • Not microscopic, it's standard DIP parts. It's not hard for that game. Also, there's no CHR-ROM, so there'll only be one chip. Unless you want to try to fix it yourself, it won't fix its self. Or send it back.
  • Well compared to other soldering I've done, it IS microscopic. The tip on mine is too big for this job. Shipping sucks at the moment so I don't really want to send it back. Other than the super minor graphics problems, it works perfectly and saves fine (except for losing that one save, but that's probably the ancient battery back-up system). Is there really any danger with playing the game as is for right now?
