Need workable classic controller for Gamecube
Hi NA!,
I'm working on getting a record max-out run on Gameboy Tetris for TG/etc. TG rules are that it has to be on original gameboy/gameboy color/gameboy advance, or on the Gamecube Gameboy adapter. The SNES Super GameBoy isn't allowed because it runs slightly faster than original Gameboy (this would be a slight negative for Tetris actually, but oh well). I would record it on the Gameboy color I have, but that's pretty unfeasible due to lighting and the fact that my tapping on the thing while playing would give the poor viewers a seizure. It just doesn't come out right.
I now have the Gamecube and the GB adapter, but I've run into a problem.
The stock GC controller has a TERRIBLE d-pad. It's very small, it's very inaccurate, and basically it makes this run impossible, as it tends to go diagonal even when I'm trying to press straight left, right, or down. As you might imagine, this makes the run impossible.
So began a journey to try to find a controller I could use on the Gamecube with a decent d-pad. Ideally this would be the NES or SNES original controllers, so I ordered this :
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003KMWMOW
Which indeed works, but it has a fatal flaw for my purpose : lag. It lags enough to make it useless to me. It was a nice try, and not too expensive, but it failed me.
So now I don't know what to do. I've found some controllers listed on ebay that say they're for Wii, but look like they use the classic plug like the Gamecube. Like this :
Unfortunately this has two problems. #1, I have no idea if it will even work on Gamecube. #2, for some weird reason EVERY_SINGLE_ONE of these listed is in Hong Kong, and the expected delivery date from there is ~1month+, which is insanely longer than I really want to wait. Especially if it's not going to work at all.
There are plenty of other controllers listed as 'Classic controller for Wii', but they all appear to have a different connector on them :
I don't have a Wii, but it looks like a little square connector rather than the rounded connector for the wii.
What do I do? Any ideas? Any experience trying to do something like this? I'm at a loss at present.
Thanks for reading NA!

I don't know if this is legit, but $30.
ETA: Shit...nevermind, I see that it's on back order...

It has the gamecube input
Bunnyboy has these:

It has the gamecube input
Any idea if these have any appreciable lag? It looks great, but I'm worried now about adapters for NES/SNES controllers after my previous adapter turned out to produce lag
It'd definitely be worth a shot though!

I haven't tried one, but it looks like Bunny is in chat now, you could hop in and ask him.

I have one of his Gamecube to NES ports and there is no lag at all. A very fine converter.

Good to hear, I just bought one of each, so awesome. Really looking forward to their arrival.
NA to the rescue! I love the hell out of you guys.

Damn TG and their damn goofy ass rules. Good luck finding the perfect controller and good luck with the record max-out run.
Thanks
Yeah apparently the Super GameBoy adapter runs about ~1% faster than a real Gameboy or the GC GB Player, which invalidates it as a certifiable platform for setting records. In reality I think it should only affect timed runs, as running slightly faster really makes everything slightly harder in real gaming. Imagine playing say gameboy contra and going for a scoring record, now imagine everything sped up 1%. If anything, it's more impressive to get that record while everything is moving slightly faster. Oh well, as soon as I get BunnyBoy's converter, I think I'll be set.
I'm also shooting for the first SNES Tetris Maxout. The ultimate goal is to be the first player to max all forms of original Nintendo Classic Tetris, which is :
NES Tetris
SNES Tetris
Gameboy Tetris
As of yet there are 3 NES Maxout people. Zero official SNES or Gameboy maxouts, though there is a guy named Dan-Z that has done it on the Super GameBoy in unofficial fashion. Afaik, he hasn't maxed out the NES version though. The NES version is the hardest of the three to some degree, the Gameboy the easiest, and the SNES kind of an odd in-between. The piece movement and overall speed of the SNES version is ever so slightly milder than the NES version, so that reaching past level 29 isn't as epic. I hit level 31 on a casual game the other day at PSP's place, and that was the first time I've ever played the SNES version.
I'll be streaming and taking videos

The Woz can supposedly max out GB Tetris, but it hasn't been validated with video evidence.

That'd be awesome, and it would certainly be evidence of him being fairly good at tapping. I can't find anything about a maxout though All I can find with a vaguely specific score is this old interview from 2007 :
http://pcworld.about.net/od/macs/Three-Minutes-With-Steve-Wozni.htm
IDG: But again, do you have any unfulfilled dreams?
Wozniak: To get 750,000 points on Game Boy "Tetris." [Laughs.]
and an old TG-related post that shows ~500k level (back in 1998)

Either way, hella cool, I hope to talk to him someday.
