Is the Nintendo 3DS worth it?

Hey guys.  I'm considering buying a Nintendo 3DS since I have the chance to get it for $150.

The things that are holding me back:
  • it's black and I wanted blue
  • I'm just not that in to portable gaming any more.  After I got the original DS on release day, I got about 6 games and haven't bought one since 2007 or before.  I had fun with the games that I had, but there was never any other must-have games for me.
However, the one game that makes me want to jump on the deal is Ocarina of Time 3D.

Would it be worth it to get?  Are you all happy with your purchases?  Thanks for your opinions!

  • If you're not really into portable gaming, I'd say no.

I bought a PSP right away and goofed around with it for a few weeks, then it collected dust for a few years before I finally sold it.

Especially if the one title that you're excited about is a port that you've probably already played to death.

The price is right though, at $150, you could probably make a profit reselling it.
  • $150 is cheap. I paid about 466 bucks for my 3DS including one game on the release day, March 25. I'm very happy with it. The 3D effect can be nauseating at times, but is quite good in my opinion. Can't wait for Ocarina of Time, never played that game, so will be interesting. At the moment I only have Splinter Cell 3D and Street Fighter IV 3D. The last gameboy I bought were actually the gameboy advance when it got released back in 2001...
  • Think of this first... At $150 you'd be stupid not to get it if you are a fan of portable gaming. Hell even if you're not, you could flip it for $50-75 profit locally if it's in fantastic shape and complete.

That said I've had 4 games, ditched one as I hated it but that's me finding SF4's cheap adaptive AI and poor controls too much to put up with. That said, I also have Steel Diver, Piltowings and Ridge Racer. Also as odd as it may seem 2 games are built in too that are fairly fun (the AR Games package, and the FaceRaiders shooter.) The system is easy on the eyes unless 3D just gives you headaches (but it can be turned off to no harm in anything so far) and that aside visually it's over the Wii, downright stunning. Audio on it is well over what the DS ever did and it is easily heard. The build seems fairly quality, all things work well as they should, also comes with a 2GB sd card to store your downloads, saves and other junk. Zelda looks to be fantastic even if it is a remix, but over that there's plenty more soon enough and enough out now to keep busy with for awhile. Also this evening the e-shop hits with 3D Excitebike and some 3D Pokedex freebie along with the netfront browser, and that's just the free stuff (Mario Land, Radar Mission, and Alleyway hit the virtual handheld.)

Pilotwings to me is the most fleshed out version yet, has more vehicles, more courses, and just more stuff to do and unlock including ever expanding free flight mode. Visually it's up there with Wii Sports Resort, nothing crazy but nothing ugly, audio is standard fare of the series, controls work awesome and the 3D to me helps navigate the rings better.

Steel Diver, 3games in 1, but all of them short. You get the story mode, has like 6 or 8 maps, nothing much, but after the first 4 it gets downright evil. It's not so much that the game itself is hard, it's being forced to use the touch screen makes battling bosses a dirty whore. Outside of that 3D is more on the less poppy, audio is standard, and the controls work for what they are. The second mode is a fastest kill time attack in very deep 3D mode(it's beautiful) where you drop ships and subs with your sub and to move you spin yourself (office chair helps) around in circles and fire off torpedoes. The third mode you hear less of is like a sudden death Advanced Wars meets Battleship type thing, you can't make more things, but you use your resources to navigate the map, pop off pings to zero in (but helps them see you too...doh) and whoever has a boat standing at the end wins. Attacking is done with periscope mode and I believe has a cannon(air) type strike you don't do but I haven't hit it in months.

Ridge Racer, if you ignored the Sony PS2/3/PSP releases will feel fresh as it has a lot of those cars, courses and music. The audio visual on this one is strong, the 3D is the real trip as it while subtle is deep as it gives you a more real feel of depth like if you were in a car truly able to gauge distance vs the flat sense of fake 3D we have on TVs (you have to see it.) Lots of courses (reverse too) and cars to unlock, has a few modes to screw around with, pretty good game.

I won't hit on SF4 as I'll get evil on it and that's not fair, a/v on it though is nice, 3D pops out a bit giving people and their flashy attacks depth. Not going to go negative on it as much as I like on controls and the AI. Ask someone else there.
  • I paid $250(plus 8% tax) for mine and I'm happy with it. If you don't like portable gaming than I don't think you'll be happy unless you

    are buying it to flip.

The 3D is pretty impressive, but it's more about the other stuff for me...brighter, clearer screen for backwards compatible DS games.

The screen is much improved over the DS Lite. I'm not sure about the DSi though. The analog nub is great and the D-pad is much better than with the mushy DS Lite pad. I love how it clicks now!

Also, and for some reason not a lot of people talk about this upgrade, is the speakers. They sound very good and 100x better than

the older DS portables. I find myself using my headphones less when playing a quick game.

By the way if you decide against it could you pass it on to me with some more details? I want to get one for my niece. I'd also give you a $10 finders fee.
  • Wasn't there a post before, where people deemed a 150 dollar 3DS in Craiglist a probable scam attempt?
  • If you can get a 3DS NEW for $150 do it NOW. If it's used with only the charger and whatnot... that's about a $20-30$ savings over a used one from Ebay.
  • Locally dimwits who bought into it because they have no self control and need anything new until they're bored a month later have been re-posting them around the $175-200 mark to make them move, yet retail they still seem to move steadily off the shelf. I think steady will go into a larger landslide once Zelda is on the shelf and the goodies that chase after it (plus E3 playing out this week with their conference tomorrow at 9am PST.)
  • I'm not big into portable gaming, but I'd get it just to flip it. But if you don't want to bother with that,I'd just pass on it. Play a game on a tiny little screen or play one on this huge flat screen HDTV I bought. Hmmm.....
  • Mine's collected dust since launch, but there's a lot of quality titles on the way this year so I'd say go for it.
  • I bought the 3ds and right now it ok. I paid 298$ with one game Dead or Alive : Dimension.
  • If you still have the opportunity, I'd take it. They have a lot of great 3DS games coming this year, as others have said. Super Mario 3DS looks fantastic, of course there's Zelda: OoT in a couple weeks, and they announced Super Smash Bros. for it, too.

They also launched the 3DS eShop yesterday, and it's pretty cool so far. Not a whole lot in terms of games on it yet, but Excitebike remade in 3D is free until July 7th - pretty neat to play. Zelda: Link's Awakening DX is downloadable today also, but it will run you $6.00. There's also the Virtual Console for it with Game Boy/Color games (Super Mario Land and Zelda DX are the only good ones so far).

What it boils down to is this: you may not play it a ton right now, but later this year you'll probably wish you bought it for cheap when you could.
  • Thanks guys for all of your suggestions! However, my hesitation cost me and it is no longer available. I'll jump on one if I ever get that price again.
  • Doh and to think you could be right now viewing all the headlined E3 3DS games in 3D videos off the e-shop right now (I just finished downloading and off to do it.)

I dunno, but I got mine for $150 new off CL.

I think they raised the price, too. Because now I see them at $200 with very similar ads.

  • Has anyone been playing excitbike on 3ds? It's a free download. Pretty cool game. I think the system is a pretty good update over the DS. I agree, I think you'll wish you bought it to play later in the year.
