PSP successor called PS Vita

PS Vita, sounds like a naturist medicine, or a brand of bottled water. Why not just call it PSP2? Even NGP sounds better.

Prices are 249 and 299 dollars. Not too bad, considering the power house it is. Also, several features have been mentioned, like that "Near" thing, that tells you when another Vita (euurrgghhh) player is around. I hope it also tells you what games you share with him/her, so you can arrive and ask for a match.

  • I like it. It makes it sound like you aren't neccessary a slothenly loser if you are so addicted to games you need to play them while in transit between game stations
  • Yeah and this will cause Nintendo to stop overcharging on the 3DS which they're doing. But the bigger question is how much damage will this do to developers to kit up, process, publish and release games on it vs the PSP? Odds are since it can cross use PS3 code, games aren't going to be cheap, probably $50 so PS3 games don't look overpriced at $60. Also given the long standing Sony tradition on how the PSP and home systems have been handled, expect expense increases across the board to developers and consumers, while being nasty about piracy stuff(due to recent bs and PSP's long standing ongoing rape and pillage.) They won't take the lead out of the market, but they could easily keep the healthy chunk they did work up to at the PSPs prime easily enough. I'd get one but I just can't see affording one for a bit, but I did love my PSP until piracy killed the releases to the point I sold it (and now thankfully I can get that 2nd god of war as a PS3 remaster in October so I'm not sad.)
  • They definately won't take the lead of the market. I think they are really taking the wrong track entirely. People want silly little games for portable gaming not epic graphics heavy adventures. The DS is going to remain the leader.. Maybe the 3Ds if it gets cheaper and gets some games out.

Edit: Until the iphone wipes em all out of course

It depends to the kind of people you aim the claim. The PSP and Vita were meant for serious gamers in the first place. For example, I'm a perfect target for this kind of system: a person that can't dedicate time to a home console anymore, but still wants last gen gaming (and has time to kill here and there). Secondly, even if they have big heavy adventures, these can be played if designed well (with many sub-goals that can be tackled relatively fast), and the sleep feature helps too. It also doesn't hurt to have the nice OLED screen for serious portable movie viewing, music, internet... The only thing it would lack is the phone function.

Now, if Sony is smart, they will give more attention/promotion to the TV-Out / PS3 controller capability. That way we can have a portable that can double as a home console if we want (remember how cumbersome was it to bring your console to your friends' houses?). It would kick ass to have two player games without the need of a second Vita, if you're going to connect it to the TV (SF vs Tekken ).

For me, the Vita represents what the PSP promised, and ended being short of. A capable internet browser - out of the box movie/photo/music player with iTunes like software, an established PS Network and Store, and ultimate portable/Tv-able gaming machine, portable television, nice video recording-photo taking...

I just meant the handheld market in general (overall), I'm not saying it's bad, or even that it won't be plenty successful, but I don't think it is going to take over the market because there are too many people who just don't want what they are offering.  It's not like console gaming.  Most people just want something quick and fun and distracting in portable gaming I think.

I know personally I myself would rather play astrosmash on my DS than uncharted 2 when I'm waiting for the wife to try on clothes for 15 minutes..  Not that I don't love me some uncharted at home.

  • I said that because you said people just want silly games on the go. But yeah, I see were you go. In reality Nintendo opened the market to people who didn't typically play games. The Vita COULD get a chunk of this public, if it's multiple capabilities besides gaming are advertised well. 250 for a console that will give people great movie viewing, net browsing, music, probable TV, etc., besides hardcore AND casual games (PSP minis), versus a 3DS in the same price range... it will get interesting for sure.
  • In fact, for me, the perfect portable gaming would be something that turns on and off as close to instantly as possible, (maybe even automatically saves RAM when you turn off and defaults to loading the saved ram) an SD card slot and plays nes games and earlier. Ideally it should ship with an adapter to load them from cart with My DS isn't ideal, but it's not too far actually
  • Yeah I think this is a MAJOR threat to the 3DS. Time will only tell. But of course, they are both fighting for market share where there are many downloadable apps (some even free) in the smartphone / tablet market. It will essentially come down to library and price, and right now Vita has the price on their side.
  • I have a feeling the Vita price will go up as it nears it's release date. Nintendo has a good hold of the hand held market, but it seems like the 3DS is taking off a bit slow. I think Nintendo will come out on top in the long run, Sony has really struggled with the hand held market. But like Jone said, only time will tell.

I agree completely. Let's hope that the new physical media they'll use makes loading games lightning fast. And game devs should cut out the crap with intros to their portable games, I want to be taken right to the menu, or even right to the action!

  • In regards to the NGP name, Sony probably couldn't use it because A: as a folded out name it was terrible. And B: Neo-Geo Pocket abbreviates as NGP, a preceding portable system.

No, you can't use it as a controller, but you can save your game on your PSP into your Sony Cloud and when you sign into your PS3, you can pick it up from there on the PS3

Lolwut? buttheadridesagain was talking about the PSP Go's ability to pair with a PS3 controller and then output to a TV, not using the PSP/Vita as a PS3 controller (BTW, you CAN use a PSP as a PS3 controller if your PSP can run homebrew )

  • I meant Playstation Vita, not PSP, my bad
  • I take my NGP to bed with me.

Amazon.com has PS Vita games for pre-order at $39.99. Of course this price could change since there are no official price known on the PS Vita games yet, but i think that the games will cost around $30 to $40, to be able to compete better with the 3DS.

Out of curiousity, why do you think that the price will go up? After such an official price reveal at E3, i dont think that there is any chance (maybe 0.1%) that the price will go up I think that it is much more likely that the 3DS price will go down when the PS Vita gets released.

EDIT: Why does one of the quotes looks strange?
