Soo...Dukes gonna be here next week..

Who is all picking it up? I have a collectors edition pre-ordered. I heard on another forum that they got the game early and said it sucked. They basically said it was outdated blah blah blah. Yet, I think it was in Game Informer, they said from what they've played, it was great. I'm picking it up regardless, how about you guys?

  • Considering how short FPS games are these days and how they all moronically with tunnelvision focus primarily on online nerdy ragefest competition over a solid story and long game like they did in the 90s I'm waiting. $60 is too steep, but if it ends up not sucking I'll get into it once it hits $30-40 used on craigslist or something.
  • ill believe it when i see it
  • Are you sure it won't be delayed by a month, or year, or decade?
  • I've pre-ordered the special edition as well. It will be the first thing I'll pick up tomorrow when it is released. Almost can't wait!
  • I'm not getting it right away, but I am looking forward to it eventually.

It's been a long time coming... (Giggity.)
  • I pre-ordered back in February. I've been waiting FOREVER for this game!
  • A buddy of mine on facebook said that it's out in England already.
  • preodered balls of steel edition sooo excited. hopefully gettin a big ass standee with duke and a school girl. u stand behind and ur face is the schoolgirl its baller but douches at my gamestop wont prolly give it to me
  • I played the demo of the PC version and it's pretty sweet. Not sure if I will be buying the full thing though. My biggest thing is whether the PC game has DRM or not. If it does, I'm not shelling out $60, I'll wait until a crazy Steam sale later on in the year, or borrow the console version from a friend or something (I'd prefer to play it on the PC though.. I mean, it's Duke).
  • Who wants to bet that some people will clean their attic out for a ten-year-old, coffee-stained pre-order and will use that?

So what you're saying is that the apocalypse is already happening in europe?
  • Yeah for some reason its coming out in America later than other places.
  • Ahh... Duke, I remember going on 3D realms forums back in the 90's looking up whatever I could for this game... ha ha.
  • Doesn't surprise me. In 15 years, expectations are unreal high. We have to take it for what it is: a game that started to be developed in the 90's and had to be finished (redone?) by someone else. I also see that reviews are mixed, so it's a "must play to know".
  • Picked up my Balls of Steel edition from GameStop today. So far I'm impressed. It isn't the best of the best in graphics, but gameplay variety makes up for it in my opinion.
  • Of course its going to get bad reviews because everybody today only care about graphics and god forbid a SHOOTER have bad graphics.

"OMG DUKE NUKEMZ SUX HALO 4 LIF"
  • ^^that's true... If it's something similar to the original trailers in terms of excitement, I give it a thumbs up. But I have no way to play it, so,
  • Is it just possible that this game was made with the mindset of the age of 15 years ago and not now so all these modern FPS review crybabies will pick it to shreds over that? 15 years ago no one played FPS gamee over a wired connection much at all, sure you had a few with like IPX-Modem over DOOM2 and the like but nothing big. Back then it was about story, length, decent but not phenomenal graphics, some special catch (duke was language, violence and tits), and focusing on the single player environment. Everything there goes against what the modern FPS game is now. It's about campaign as a secondary affair, something like 3-5hours at most, filler so they can shovel a massive online opportunity of insane firefights for thousands of players at any time...generic, more me-too, but enough of a variation you'll be the COD vs the MOH fanboy.

I just have a feeling Duke isn't a 10, but it doesn't deserve anything near a 1 or a 5 either, maybe it's an 8 level adventure in classic FPS land back when it was about the campaign, not the 12 year olds with the mouth over the mic in a live frag fest.
  • When I first saw the commercial for this the other night, the first thing that popped in my mind was Chinese Democracy by Guns N' Roses (aka The Axl Rose Project). Wonder if it will turn out the same way. Good, but not "15 years" good. Projects that take that long to complete should be near flawless in my opinion especially with so much hype and anticipation surrounding them.
  • I think the game will probably review poorly overall but it'll be one of those games that's still appreciated by the majority of gamers. I've played the first access demo and I guess it's an old build and not a very good one but I still enjoyed it. Probably all the COD & Halo players will think this game is crap but if you like more classic style FPS like Perfect Dark or TimeSplitters I think it'll be a blast.
  • I should buy a copy of this game, if only to support Gearbox. Excellent developer!
  • here you can see a video of my unboxing the Balls of Steel Edition

I'm about 4 hours in the game and I'm loving it! The gameplay and graphics are mediocre, but I don't care about that. The humor is just like in the old days ^^

  • Must... get... Balls of Steel edition. I've been waiting 14 years to play it, and damn it, I will!
  • Two words: no way. It's already gotten bad review scores, plus: no matter how amazing it is, it could never, ever live up to anticipation and hype that it brought upon itself from the fourteen-year long delay.

Besides, I'm not an FPS fan anyway.
  • so, does it really blow that hard??
  • well, when i bought l.a. noire on amazon it came with a $20 credit. for awhile i was set using that credit toward getting fear 3, which comes out in a week, but since i am on vacation this week i decided to preorder duke instead since it comes out today. i should also add that fear 3 came with another $20 game credit and duke only came with $10.

played the demo and it was kind of fun but had all the problems everyone else mentioned. i then read all the reviews bashing the game and saw it being rated mostly around a 5.

decided to cancel my order on amazon and just rent this one but it was too late. i can still send it back when i get it for a full refund, but i'll probably be too curious once the game is actually in my hands to do that.
  • I'm sure it's fun for a nostalgic trip but I'm not one for FPS games anyway. I trust Gearbox made a good game out of what they had to work with and I'm glad they were the studio that ended up with it. I'll get it when it's 20 bucks.
  • Hi, ive been playing for an hour or so, laughed 5-6 times already and no lag on my fat ps3. People are such haters, they say 1 minute load time when you die or load level, i clocked it between 20-25 seconds. I will agree graphics are not great but good enough to have a lot of fun, its Duke Nukem not Crysis. In Dukes spirit, F the haters.
  • ^^I'm really skeptic when it comes to critics, so please keep us updated with your impressions deeper in the game. Tim Buckley from Ctrl-Alt-Del was very very harsh with it, going so far saying that the character belongs to the past, and that in today's scene there's no place for Duke.
