OMG Nintendo Chest on craigslist!

All right guys, I am happy to bring you my first finders keepers thread after being on NA for almost two years.  I feel so freaking good right now.  Here's the story:

I had a long day at work and I sit down at my computer and browse NA a bit and I saw two finders keepers threads and posted in each of them.  Your guys' stories always inspire me to keep trying, so I pull up craigslist and do my regular search: "nintendo."  First on the list is a Nintendo chest.  I pull it up and they're a store and they're asking $8 with a 10% discount for mentioning the ad!  I'm like OMG OMG OMG.  I call their number and there's no answer.  There's a really long bizarre voice mail that's got me thinking the owner is crazy.  I'm like, Aw, too bad.  I'm figuring someone already got it because it was posted about an hour and a half ago.  I call again about 3 minutes later and there's still no answer.  I show my roommate and lament that that they're probably closed by now and I won't be able to get it tomorrow because I work from 5AM to 4PM and they're already closed.

But then I remembered the countless finders keepers threads that I had read where it really paid off to go out on a limb and give it your best shot.

I looked up the address on Google Maps and it was really close to my apartment.  I got my keys and told my roommate,"I'll be back soon.  I probably won't get it."  I take off and drive pretty fast to get there.  I arrive expecting a locked store with the hours posted in the window, but I see a stuffed animal in a chair outside.  This must mean they're open!  I go in and there's no one there.  "Hello?"  No answer.  Then a guy comes in the door and greets me and I say, "Hey there, I saw on craigslist that you guys have a Nintendo chest."  "Yeah man, it's over here.  My name's Tyler."  "Nice to meet you, my name's Alex.  My brother's name is actually Tyler."  "Cool!"  We chatter on the way over to where the chest resides.  "Yeah, this is a really nice store."  "Thanks, we just recently opened."  Understandable, because it's pretty bare.  I go and look at it and it looks super beat up, but really awesome.  "It said on the ad that it would be $8."  "That doesn't sound right.  Let me call the manager."  Several nervous minutes later, the price is confirmed.  I carry the awesome chest over to the register almost jumping with joy and he says that the register isn't working so he has to do the tax by hand, haha.  I know I'm pushing my luck, but I say,"Oh yeah, and on craigslist it said that there would be a 10% discount."  "Oh, okay, I'll do that."  Yes.  It comes out to $7.70 and I hand over the cash.  He starts hand writing the receipt when another employee comes from the back and says, "Yeah, you know you can get like hundreds for that on eBay."  I'm like, eeeeeeeeeeeeeee, nervous.  "You know, if it's like brand new."  Whew!  I say, "Yeah, for people who actually keep it in its original box and stuff."  Lol.  I take the receipt and I get the hell out of there.  There was lots of yelling and cheering on the way home for me.  I'm so happy!

I know this isn't an amazing amazing find worthy of a long story, but I figured I might as well relish in it as it is my first good deal locally and my first finders keepers thread and I'm really proud of my new awesome chest  If it weren't for you guys, I might not have gotten it.

  • Nice score man! always pays off to try a 2nd and 3rd time!
  • Wow! That is a really cool and unique piece!

You should consider getting it professionally cleaned/fixed up.
  • Thanks guys! Do you know what a chest like this usually goes for?
  • Cool! And it even has the blood of the previous owner staining the side.
  • Shouldn't it be $7.20 with the 10% discount? I think you got ripped of man...
  • Very nice, looks like it needs some love but still a great find for the price
  • I've always wanted one of these things, hahah. Congratulations on the really cool find, man!

In that condition these have been selling on ebay for around 75.  I have seen them go up to over 100 and as low as around 55 but it really depends on the condition.  Most chests are in the condition you have so it's not like yours is really bad.  The hinges look good and the sides are on.  I did see a chest in much worse condition then yours sell for around 125 on ebay in the last 6 months so I would say you are pretty good.

Even if you resold this on ebay with 25 shipping, you would still make about a 50 dollar profit from what you paid!

Congrats and enjoy, those chests are cool and kinda unique!  I have one myself but don't have any use for it so it may pop up here on Nintendo Age after my honeymoon.  If someone really wants one, just pm me.  The condition is slightly better than this one.

  • Dude, I just saw one of these the other fucking day at a yard sale but didn't pick it up. It was super sun-faded, I didn't know it was worth that much. I've been wanting to go back but... whatever... -things- have been preventing me. I looked it up, and a few chests have sold on ebay for $100-$150 shipped.

And they were just using it to hold the other junk they were selling.  They had it filled with all the little stuff that no one wants to buy, $12 for everything including the chest.

Wow, thanks for the wealth of information!  I had thought that it would be worth $30, $50 at the most.  I will be keeping it for myself, but it's still good to know its worth  Thanks!
  • That thing is awesome.
  • Great story Alex, nice work
  • Very nice! And that lid has the same artwork as my paper plates
