Suggest Some Good SNES RPG's

I am looking for less fantasy/ midevil and more of a modern day or futuristic RPG for the SNES.

I already know about:

Mario RPG
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy 3
Earthbound

Comments

  • earthbound my man
  • Shadowrun
  • I second Earthbound. If you don't have the cash to shell out for an actual copy, play a ROM. Its an awesome game, you won't regret it.
  • Oh, I should have added Earthbound to my list

  • I will throw out there a lesser known rpg and say it is fantastic!

ROBOTREK! check it out if you can locate one....I absolutely love the story and the ability to power up your robots and use them to fight....

  • Secret of Mana, Breath of Fire, FF2 (4), Lufia 2, and Illusions of Gaia come to mind. I don't really care for Earthbound, but if you like the fantasy driven games, you'll like these titles here.

ETA: Didn't realize you said less fantasy driven. Screw ya then
  • I was going to nominate Robotrek based on the "futuristic feel" that the OP is looking for. Of course I've never played it, but it looks cool from what I've seen.
  • I would say to check out Illusions of Gaia, and Earthbound. Also if you haven't played it, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest...it's a weirdly bad game, but it's so good at the same time. Also, Super Mario RPG.
  • shadowrun seemed interesting

what kind of game is syndicate?

i could never get into it
  • If you branch out to the genesis, the phantasy star series is an awesome futuristic rpg series.

On snes you can look at an english patched rom of star ocean. Retrozone also has a repro of star ocean coming sometime in the future.
  • Earthbound have to be my favorite by far. Got it a week ago, almost beaten the game now. Haven't been bored one second. It is just a fantastic RPG. It is just out of the ordinary, not the typical RPG you would expect.

The sad thing is that this game is also one of the more expensive titles for the SNES. Everyone should give this game a try, but the price tag seem to scare some away.

Chrono Trigger is also one of my favorites. Since it have 13 different endings that are triggered through choises made during playthrough, it also have huge replay value. This RPG is also very unique. I would also recommend getting the DS version to get all the extra stuff like movie cut scenes etc. Those were in the PS1 version, but sadly couldn't be possible on the SNES cart.

  • Robotrek for sure, tis an awesome (short) rpg.

breath of fire 1 and 2

    brainlord

    paladin's quest

    7th saga

This is just a few, as you can tell I enjoy rpgs. There are plenty more, but I am at work and can't think of anymore (besides the ones alreasy mentioned).
  • I just tried a Robotrek rom quick and it looks like it may be fun .
  • Both Lufias are cool. Brandish is ok.

If you are playing on a powerpak or emulator, I suggest giving Metal Max returns (translation) a go.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_Max_Returns
    http://www.romhacking.net/trans/1215/

Kick ass game in a post apocalyptic future. When you die, instead of getting a game over load game screen, your dad carries your corpse to the mad scientist to reanimate you.
Here is a vid of gameplay after you get your first tank. Notice the player gets out of the tank to fight sometimes on random battles. You don't want to use up all your expensive tank ammo on random battles. You'll get a whole party of characters and tanks to customize.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'm going to have to throw this on my power pak and give it a try.
  • Totally forgot about Brain Lord. Kind of futurish... good game though. More ARPG instead of your traditional RPG if I remember correctly.
  • brainlord was never my favorite..it lacked story adn some of the puzzles you would encounter were pretty lame.....what about Soul Blazer or Illusion of Gaia....maybe throw out there Tecmo Secret of the Stars.....

Robotrek takes some advancing the robots before you feel the power of the game...the colors are vivid and the sounds , music really keep ya goin....

    and its futuristic!

  • not real sure why, but this is the second double post today!  hm,mmmmmm,.,,'

  • Isn't Secret of Evermore "modern"?
  • Yes it is.

Are there any other less known RPG's that would match what im looking for?
  • I've not played far into either of these, but they may be worth a try.

    Twisted Tales of Spike McFang

    Big Sky Trooper

Or how about Uncharted Waters (a favorite of mine) It's not futuristic, but not fantasy either.
  • Fire Striker is a lesser known action rpg.Possibly even Ultima VI and VII.
  • It's hard to break away from the "no fantasy" criteria, but I'd recommend Lagoon, Arcana, and Wizardry V on top of the RPGs already mentioned.
  • You really need to check out the Phantasy Star series on the Genesis. Mainly IV, if you havent already. Plus they are a hell of a lot cheaper than the snes ones I just got a minty CIB Phantasy star iv for like $18 shipped on ebay.

    Nintendopower_4_ever,

I just checked Wikipedia, yes it did come out for the SNES. I thought it only came out for the Genesis and 3DO, my bad. In fact it looks like it was ported to many systems after the PC version hit.
