Secret of Mana, Breath of Fire, FF2 (4), Lufia 2, and Illusions of Gaia come to mind. I don't really care for Earthbound, but if you like the fantasy driven games, you'll like these titles here.
ETA: Didn't realize you said less fantasy driven. Screw ya then
I was going to nominate Robotrek based on the "futuristic feel" that the OP is looking for. Of course I've never played it, but it looks cool from what I've seen.
I would say to check out Illusions of Gaia, and Earthbound. Also if you haven't played it, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest...it's a weirdly bad game, but it's so good at the same time. Also, Super Mario RPG.
Earthbound have to be my favorite by far. Got it a week ago, almost beaten the game now. Haven't been bored one second. It is just a fantastic RPG. It is just out of the ordinary, not the typical RPG you would expect.
The sad thing is that this game is also one of the more expensive titles for the SNES. Everyone should give this game a try, but the price tag seem to scare some away.
Chrono Trigger is also one of my favorites. Since it have 13 different endings that are triggered through choises made during playthrough, it also have huge replay value. This RPG is also very unique. I would also recommend getting the DS version to get all the extra stuff like movie cut scenes etc. Those were in the PS1 version, but sadly couldn't be possible on the SNES cart.
This is just a few, as you can tell I enjoy rpgs. There are plenty more, but I am at work and can't think of anymore (besides the ones alreasy mentioned).
Kick ass game in a post apocalyptic future. When you die, instead of getting a game over load game screen, your dad carries your corpse to the mad scientist to reanimate you. Here is a vid of gameplay after you get your first tank. Notice the player gets out of the tank to fight sometimes on random battles. You don't want to use up all your expensive tank ammo on random battles. You'll get a whole party of characters and tanks to customize.

brainlord was never my favorite..it lacked story adn some of the puzzles you would encounter were pretty lame.....what about Soul Blazer or Illusion of Gaia....maybe throw out there Tecmo Secret of the Stars.....
Robotrek takes some advancing the robots before you feel the power of the game...the colors are vivid and the sounds , music really keep ya goin....
You really need to check out the Phantasy Star series on the Genesis. Mainly IV, if you havent already. Plus they are a hell of a lot cheaper than the snes ones I just got a minty CIB Phantasy star iv for like $18 shipped on ebay.
I just checked Wikipedia, yes it did come out for the SNES. I thought it only came out for the Genesis and 3DO, my bad. In fact it looks like it was ported to many systems after the PC version hit.

On snes you can look at an english patched rom of star ocean. Retrozone also has a repro of star ocean coming sometime in the future.

If you are playing on a powerpak or emulator, I suggest giving Metal Max returns (translation) a go.

Twisted Tales of Spike McFang
Big Sky Trooper
Or how about Uncharted Waters (a favorite of mine) It's not futuristic, but not fantasy either.
