Oh, I remember this one, kicked some ass in it too, even though I didn't get the top score, friggin' enjoyed every bit of trying. One life rule is going to make it even tougher though. I got this one, even though label is messed up and eventually want to get a nicer looking copy, at least I do got it, so I get to use my NES again this week.

Well, lets see if I can repeat it. Probably what may hold me back is that I don't have as much time towards gaming as I did then, I wasn't working at that time, am now, plus got other things going on too. But, I'll certainly put as much time as I can. Also wasn't much competition then, other than a few making things tough on me, but there weren't many posting scores for it.
...new score down below.
I have a feeling I'm going to have a lot more tough competition this year.
New score, having trouble besting it for the moment: 757,610
My first entry, but it took me a half dozen tries to get it, and I know its far from good enough. Will continue to try to best this, need to get over a million at least, and even then I know I won't be safe, especially after seeing those Battletoads scores this year.
Score upon 1st death 737,850
See my next post for higher score...
Update, slightly higher score. I saw that '?' and knew that this would be the end, always have a hard time with those spring enemies here.
Score upon 1st death 824,840
See latest post for big updated score...!

Very good score Megan. I remember beating this game a few months ago but I don't remember my score. I never really went for a high score on this one either so don't really know the tricks to a high score.
I haven't beaten this game since the mid 90's I think, not that I can't, already done beaten it a couple times back then, just that its so damn long, regardless of passwords, that I never felt like going the distance ever again in recent years. But I have had a ton of practice with scoring high in it when the contest was first held for this game in 2009, even though then we were playing until we used up our first continue, still, I played this game to death (did the same with Marble Madness too) and it gave me the opportunity to learn a few things about the game.
Don't pop enemies right away, after you encase them all in bubbles, wait for them to all cluster together, fill in some holes between them with bubbles too if need be, then when there are no gaps, all bubbles completely connected, pop 'em, the whole damn bunch will burst, massive points earned, up to 64,000 points at one time if able to get a whole crapload of them at once, gotta be a lot of enemies for this high a bonus. Also, grab as much fruits and veggies as possible, particularly pay attention to those that are worth more, or at least going for those that are closest first. And those big diamonds that sometimes fall from the top of the screen, don't want to miss it when it appears, that's a good 10,000 right there. Lot of technique to this game, each round calls for a new way to solve it getting the most bang to your score. If I were playing this straight up, just killing baddies instantly instead of trying to group them together I'd probably get a lot farther on a single life, but my score wouldn't be anywhere near what I've been getting. Another thing, stay away from parasols, you don't need to be warping ahead to harder rounds, you'll get there eventually on your own, and you certainly don't want to risk more difficulty when you are trying for a high score. Another, 1ups are worthless for this year's Bubble Bobble contest, try to stay away from collecting all of the letter bubbles, I've been robbed of quite a bit of points accidently finishing the word 'extend' because it removed me from that round I was about to bust all the bad guys on and brought me to an extra life room before bringing me to the next round minus points I wanted. Shoes are another evil in this game, sure you move faster, speed is good for collecting stuff quickly but its hard to control and you don't lose it til you die, and certainly you don't want that because then your 1 life is up.
I have to find time to get into this game...
Been playing for an hour or so and just can not get into it...I figured that would happen. Never been a fan...
but here is my Participation score...

I have a good score so far, but I have a feeling there are going to be some massive ones submitted come Sunday...
EDIT: Screw you, past self. That level's not even hard.

That whole one life thing adds a whole new level of stress, doesn't it?
No joke. It's really easy to slip up and get caught by surprise by something.
Indeed. Having trouble passing my own high score, keep averaging 500,000-600,000 something lately and seem to keep dying in the same damn places.

Lincon does your TV have dials on it? That's pretty excellent.

yeah, UHF and VHF channels also fake wood grain on the sides and top. i think it's from 1984 or so. I bought it because it has the regular f-type coax input as well as the old prong style posts for an atari switchbox.

Another round, another participation point.
