Mr. Gimmick Ipressions

I just got my Retrozone copy of Mr. Gimmick in the mail today.  I've never played it before on an emulator or anything and had only heard of it mentioned a few times here and there throughout my history of NES collecting.  I'm assuming a lot of people here are playing it for the first time now that the reproduction cart was released.

Personally I'm blown away.  It's another one of those jems that I didn't even know existed.  Graphically it's about as pretty as an NES game gets.  The sound and gameplay are excellent and, another plus, it's really really hard.  I've been playing NES stuff for about 25 years now and I'm always amazed at it's ability to still surprise me (I just discovered Gun-Nac as well and... wow).

So what is everyone's impression of the game?  Who else is playing it?

  • I don't have a cart yet, but one day when I get my awesome powerpak, I'll be blown away too. I love this game on emulator, and the dude who did this put some care into it. As his first game he'd made for the NES and I believe last, he knew how to program a game and released probably one of the most creative platforms ever. This game is epic, I can't wait to play it on a real system! And retousb's label is pretty nice too.
  • Yeah, Mr. Gimmick is probably one of the best rare games out there for the NES. Well, maybe it is even one of the best NES games out there in general as well It has great music, graphics and platform gameplay in my opinion.

It is a bit pity that the game is quite rare because it would be great if more people got the chance to play it. Although i must admit that the rarity around the game ads some "mystery" to the game, which i like Everyone can get a repro cart though, so maybe it isnt that hard to get the hand on this game without having to buy the original.
  • I just received my cart yesterday. Only got to spend a few minutes on it, but so far the game is really cool. Great music, great graphics... pretty damn hard so far and I'm only on the first boss.
