Game Boy SP Erased My Game!!

Recieved a used Game Boy SP (AGS-101) in the mail today.

Put in Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, and the "Nintendo" start up screen came up scrambled. I restarted the game, and my save was gone...

I had almost 30 hrs on this game. I beat it recently, so not that big of a deal. Just sucks.

PS: The Game Boy works fine.

  • that still sux >< 30 hours of gameplay down the drain

    Whoot my 100th post .
  • Gotta love it. My NES did that to me halfway through my very first run through the original Zelda last year. Talk about a downer. Ah well, it didn't take too terribly long to get back that far.
  • That happened to me when Pokemon Red first came out back in the day. I had just gotten to the Elite Four and lost my game. Oddly enough, the battery still works today.
  • I've noticed my backlit SP on exceptionally rare occasions does this too. Pokemon Gold and Wario Land 2 GBC (not GB). Besides its R button is finicky.
  • I have had this happen to me with two games recently. The first was Phantasy Star on SMS. I has just put in about 4 hours of level grinding when the machine froze, and when I booted it back up my save was gone. My Master System nearly learned to fly that day. The second was Donkey Kong Country 2 on SNES. I was midway through the 4th area when it decided to eat my save file. I easily regained my progress on that one though.
  • I've noticed most well built consoles and handhelds only ever corrupt SRAM when the cart slot is dirty. Even the slightest bit of dirt can sometimes be unlucky enough to destroy saves. My only recommendation for this is to make sure your systems and cartridges are really clean. After that, maybe consider taking a voltage reading from each cartridge's save battery (using a multimeter) and see how far from the usual 3 volts it is. If the voltage is dipping below 2 or 1.5 volts, it wouldn't be a bad idea to change it out.

I hope this post helps put to rest any conclusions of sheer luck. Electronics don't work that way (unless the game is poorly coded).
