Maybe some companies these days *DO* care about single customers...

Here's the story...  I went down to McKay's (Chattanooga) about a week or so ago.  I made probably one of my better finds in a while, especially for non-NES related stuff...  I found a loose cart Fun 'n Games (Genesis; $2.95), complete and mint Fatal Frame (PS2, $28.95), and a nearly-complete and excellent Shin Megami Tensei:  Digital Devil Saga box set (PS2, $29.95).  Yes, nearly-complete on Digital Devil Saga:  it was missing the soundtrack disc.  So my first instinct is to make a post at Digital Press asking if anyone had one they'd sell...  The only real response I got told me to try e-mailing Atlus.

So I e-mailed Atlus's customer service department (a rare occasion in and of itself), explaining a bit about me, that I'm a collector and a gamer, that I play RPGs, and have come to like some of the Atlus titles specifically.  Then I told them of my find at McKay's, and that DDS was missing the soundtrack disc, and I asked him since they didn't have any in the store, if they had any at all in stock, and that I'd be willing to pay somewhat for them (though I never disclosed an actual figure...it would've only been around $5-$10 anyway).

The response came three days later (Monday, the 28th), a fellow by the name of Rob Stone replied, saying that they didn't have any for sale, but "I think I could dig one out of the warehouse for you.  Reply with your mailing address and I'll see what I can do."  I was halfway suspicious at first, since he didn't ask for any money, but I did e-mail him back that night and thanked him for his response, and gave him my address.  Well...fast forward to today, and in my mail, a bubble envelope with an official Atlus address label on it, and inside was the Digital Devil Saga soundtrack disc, brand-new image .  I couldn't believe what I saw...it truly amazed me.  Goes to show that at least one of the big gaming companies really does care about the semi-average consumer image .

  • Wow, nice. That is really going above and beyond. I can't get shipping companies to call me back with a price quote (and this is a service I'm paying for). I was just bitching to my wife about how the customer service has vanished from todays business and how no one cares. Good to see some people still do.

  • That's just plain awesome -- nice to hear there are still a few companies left out there that give a damn.
  • That is a good story. Looks like you got ahold of someone who acutally cared. Glad you got what you needed.
  • That is amazing. I just finished up a week of customer service training at work and it always amazes at how bad customer service can be most places. Esp. in restaurants! It boggles my mind that someone who knows they are getting paid based on their service level then provides bad service. If you don't want to do the job find one that is not service based.

  • cool glad you got the disc
  • haha... man, what is customer service coming to when it's remarkable to get GOOD service?

NGD, funny you mention, I worked one summer as a waiter at a swanky place and did a damn good job. Ever since, I find bad waiting COMPLETELY inexcusable. If the service is real bad I don't tip. It drives my wife crazy, but I mean, com'on--they're already getting minimum wage, if they want extra money from me they have to do more than bring me food and a bill. Carl's Jr. will do that.
  • Most servers don't make anywhere near minimum wage, at least not here. Servers make 2.13 per hour plus tips. But they have to tip share with hostess's and bus boys as well. If they have a silverware roller, they have to give him a cut as well.

  • I tip even at a buffet. (especially so since I feel sorry for the poor immigrants) Part of the price of eating out to me is, I gotta pay the lion's share of that worker's wages. Not sure why that's how it is - it's not like it keeps them on their toes or anything, the vast majority of servers around here really could care less that you're paying for their schoolbooks. Probably because they have mommy and daddy to fall back on image I think you can tell the servers who really need the money from those just doing it to feel like they're self-sufficient (and it's got nothing to do with age).
  • Ha! I work like 5 min. from the Mckay's your talking about (small world). I never seem to find anything good anymore though. I'm pretty sure that they hired on someone who is getting REALLY good deals before any games hit the floor. I remember picking up a copy of earthbound (2.95) and several complete FF7's for 9.99 back in the day.

Damn dude.  Here in CA they make minimum wage unless the establishment provides living quarters, the food doesn't ding 'em.

  • Thats damn awesome indeed! image Its great to hear that customer service doing something like this. I wish i could say the same about Capcom's customer support. I e-mailed them maybe 2 weeks ago asking if they had a Mega Man 20th Anniversary book avalible or where i could find one (i told them i could find one at the japanese store, but i was hoping to find an english version). I havnt gotten any answer from them yet, unless i have deleted their mail by accident or it went to the spam folder, but i doubt that.

  • Yet another reason I love Atlus. Long live the little guy!
  • Time to email Konami...
