Help me fix my Sega CD

Well this is turning out to be an annoying experience.
I have a model 2 Sega CD that keeps giving me issues.

At first it would not power on, but replacing the fuse fixed that. However, now the disc drive spins any time the power is connected, and the BIOS freezes(?). It will show the planets screen but never the Sega CD logo or press start or anything. Just a silent frozen picture of the planets and says Version 2.00 above it. I have tried it with several genesisisieseses?
The light also never  blinks. Im pretty close to just throwing it away, but any ideas?

  • Make sure the Genesis to SCD connection isn't dirty, for starters. An easy way would be to wet the Genesis expansion edge connector in isopropyl alcohol (with a cotton swab or something) then stick inside the SCD a few times. Dry the connector, wet it then rinse and repeat a few more times. Let everything dry, then see if that helps any.
  • I cleaned the entire thing inside and out, even took out the ribbon cable and cleaned that...what worries me and makes me think its unfixable is that the disc motor spins the second a psu is connected, regardless of a genesis even being there, and the only way to make it stop is disconnecting the power. I am thinking a surge hit it and fried things.
  • i had the same problem with a model 1. the system would power on and load to the BIOS and freeze right away. most likely, you need to replace your capacitors. my caps were replaced and it is running like new again.
  • Thanks for the info! I had feared that. I am decent with a soldering iron, but I dont think I want to play Sega CD bad enough to recap one
  • You could probably find someone on Sega-16 who could re-cap your Sega CD. Lots of experienced solder-ers there yonder be. Just click the link in my sig!
  • Ive been a sega-16 lurker for years! I almost never post there though. I think I am just going to recap it myself. I did an s-video mod on my non-tmss genesis a few months ago, and have done lots of circuit bending projects in the past, so I am sure I could do it. Probably during christmas break. Thanks for the help and information.
  • Do you happen to have any extra fuses. I blew mine a few weeks back and now I'm trying to find one.
  • How about checking out SEGA-AGE! There is a few people over there that could help as well.
