Recommendations Please

Now that i secured my system on cyber monday i need some advice on a few things.

This is gonna be a gift me and my son ( 6 yr. old )

I never had a ps3 so i dont know shit , i already bought a socom 4 which was my game back on ps2

Just wanted to know what some good titles are for him ?

whats a good brand wireless headset  ?

Also is c.o.d. that much better then socom ? seems like from what i hear it was a disappointment.

Looks like i must had MW3 too.

Do i have to sign up for pay for playing online ?

  • PSN is free for "non-premium" content, so essentially it's a Pay-to-Play service.

    Great PS3 exclusives include...

    - God of War 3

    - Metal Gear Solid 4

    - Demon's Souls

    - Uncharted 1 - 3

    - Ratchet & Clank Series

    - Little Big Planet 1 & 2

    - Killzone 3

    - Resistance: Fall of Man

A great wireless headset for the PS3 would be just about any headset really- they're all pretty much the same thing. Just comes down to how much clutter you want. The less clutter- the more higher the price. Of course, the little 1-ear headsets are all trash.

Finally, Call of Duty is by far the worst of all FPS franchises out there in terms of technology and quality- but is by far the most popular. In fact, it might be the most biggest gaming franchise on the planet and if I'm correct has even bested Super Mario...in fact, come to think of it- it's the biggest franchise in all of entertainment and media (bigger so than Star Wars if I'm not mistaken).

For a six year old boy I would highly recommend you get Katamari games for him. They're all fantastic! Avoid games like Demon's Souls and God of War (too hard- extremely gory and lots of sex stuffs in God of War) and just make sure you check out some gameplay reviews to see if it's suitable for your little one and up to par to his enjoyment!
  • I would recommend getting the Uncharted games. If for nothing else the graphics are amazing.
  • I have played Uncharted 2, but not 3. Man you need to play that game.
  • As far as recommendations for your 6 year old son...

My oldest 2 kids love the Lego series on Xbox 360, and it's also on the PS3. They're 3 and 5 years old so they're close in age to your son. Harry Potter, Batman, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Pirates of the Carribean. Cant really go wrong with those...and most of them are really cheap.

We just got Disney Universe which is a pretty fun platformer...I even enjoy playing it with my kids.

  • If you want retro get 3d dot hero. Kinda like zelda. If you or/and the kid would like that.

    Hey man,

    Welcome to the PS3 family

I used to be all into Socom years ago (ps2 era - even beta tested some of the games), the socom that's currently on the ps3 system is not bad but, nowdays it's not the greatest. It's like a 7/10 type game. Socom ppl enjoy it because its a series they have been following.

Call of duty - if anything buy modern warfare 2 (which should be cheap now since black ops, and modern warfare 3 is out). This game is more like an arcade game where you don't really take it seriously but it's fun. And I don't actually do the single player mode on these games, I just go online.

Battlefield 3 - this is almost more like a socom game, were more tactics are involved. I would recommend this game instead of socom or cod. It's pretty sweet

MAG - this is another game by the zipper company (which make socom games), this game is like a battlefield game / socom mix. But on the weak side (still fun online).

Uncharted series - They are all fun games to enjoy, and p.2 p.3 are addictive online. You can like record a match online and keep it in their servers. Story mode is good, plays like a indiana jones movie and the online multiplayer  gives it some good replay value.

Bluetooth headsets = like mentioned before any will do. Heck if you can't find a cheap one let me know I think i got a brand new one around here I'd sell cheap

Online play = is free - no monthly fees to enjoy games

DC Universe Online = if you like MMORPG's with dc comic super heroes.... this game is actually free now and you just have to download the game through the PSN (playstation network) which you can access when the system is on. With a new system you'll have the room to get this puppy

Netflix = You can use this program if you have the service

Playback movies = if you have an external hard drive with movies you can plug it in to the playstation (using the USB port) and watch the movies you already have. Same goes for music, and pictures.

Adult content games: If you like noir stuff, being a detective then L.A Noir is a cool game. It is very graphic so play when the kids are in bed. Metal gear solid 4 is great too, another good game off the series. Assassin's creed is another good type to try especially since part 1 and 2 are cheap to get now since theirs new releases.

Kid games = Theirs a new ratchet and clank game that is out, which should be fun since 4 ppl can play. Theirs also game you can download via PSN like 'plants vs zombies'.
All the LEGO games are great for kids.  Little big planet 1 and 2 is like mario bros but with full character and lvl customization. Theirs soooo much you can do in that game and theirs story mode too. People make lvls which you can download and save on your HD to play later on.
If you want a mario kart type game - try modnation racers. That game is pretty sweet, you can make your cart, tracks and characters! I've had so much fun with that game.

Examples of designs you can do (these are in game pictures you can take during the game):

All these I made in game too, just takes time and creativity and unlocking the stuff to make too.

hehe sorry for the load of pictures -

That's some of the things i can think of atm.
And if you need any help with the system let me know

my user name is punkr13 there too, you can add me to the ps3 friendslist

Also if you want new games for cheap i recommend using lockerz.com site.
It's a site where you get pts by watching videos (which i just click, do something else and refresh the page 3 times so that i get max pts per video).
after you get the pts you spend them getting % off games, and this past week was 50% off games. I basically got the new titles for 32 bucks shipped. If you have question about that site let me know too.

so those are my 2 cents for now...
  • thanks for all the info everyone .

Just got a couple lego games, uncharted 1,2,3 socom 4, battlefield 3 ,and cob mw3, mod nation racer.

Hey does anyone know if you can download Dogs Life ? i know you cant play the ps2 games on the ps3 anymore but is that game able to be downloaded to the system or will i have to pick up a ps2 for that ?
  • Everyone has already stated the amazing exclusives. Uncharted, Ratchet, Infamous, Killzone, God of War, etc....

for your kid def pick up the Sly Collection. HD remakes of the PS2 games but they are simple enough he could do pretty well on them. Sly 1 is my all time favorite 3D platformer and if you haven't tried it, you owe it to yourself to do so.
  • I'd like to recommend Valkyria Chronicles to you, if you like strategy RPGs. Check it out on youtube to get an idea, as the moving and attacking mechanics are interesting and much better seen than described.
