MS Paint help

Okay, I have Windows 7. I hated the MSPaint it uses. Why? Well,  it's not good for color depth and index colors, it uses anti-aliasing (not good for sprite works) and overall the tools are nerfed and I can't used it for what I intend to use it for. It's not a bad program for other projects, but I can't use it for what I need done.

So what I did was take Windows Vista's paint files and took ownership through DOS on Windows 7's paint and renamed it so the filename doesn't conflict with Vista's. Worked fine for a year or so, then all of a sudden, I get this:

Like it became self aware or something and quit working? I ran a system file check (sfc) through dos to refresh and replace all the old files and started over and it still does this. I have ownership to all the .exe files and their .mui files and even copied them to C:\Windows\en-US instead of C:\Windows\System32\en-US .

My question is why, why did it do this? I'm guessing something in the registry got messed up for some odd reason. I dunno. I've searched online and can't find any info on the matter as to why it does this. I don't think my Vista file is at all corrupted, cuz even my back up doesn't work.

So to anyone who can help me get my Vista Paint working, I'll GIVE YOU A FREE STARTOPICS NES GAME WITH A BOX, plus some other goodies. I'm looking for the answer to the question of why it's doing it (I can't bring up any error code, so i have no clue), and what I can do to fix it without having to reinstall my OS...

Please serious comments only, I know there are other "good" programs out there, but please don't tell me to download Gimp, Photoshop, Paint.net, or anything like that, cuz I don't use them like what I need Vista Paint for. And yes, MSPaint for Windows 95 does work fine, but it doesn't write into the registry, and plus the zoom features suck. I just want my Vista Paint back...

Already did all that, bro. It's not a shortcut error. Trust me, I've looked EVERYWHERE online. I want to know WHY it errors like this, because it's a specific error pertaining to something which I think may be in the registry.

Also, I ran virus scans and everyting, still nothing.

Darn. I might look more into it later... I want the game though :3
  • I'll give this case about a month or two, then I'm just gonna rebuy my antiviruses and reinstall my OS. Either that, or buy another PC. lol

Still, I find it always better know WHY something happened then fixing the problem than outright fixing it. If anybody has any questions (no matter how tech they are), please post!!
  • you have WIndows 7? send me a remote assistance request ulasa_mosa@hotmail.com. I'll fix it
  • Did you try running it in compatibility mode? I know that sometimes works for me when I can't get a program to work. If you need the steps of how to change the compatibility mode let me know and I will send them to you. Good luck on getting it to work.
  • Bet it's a permissions issue with Windows 7. I also think ulasamosa will fix it if you send him the remote assistance request

Good luck to both of you.
  • i've done it for a client before. Did you actually use the Vista paint along with the one from Win7? The best way is to flat out replace all the Win7 paint files with the Vista ones.

the issue your having probably is a permissions issue.  But since I dont know what you did to get there in the first place its kidna hard without seeing it

    C:\windows\system 32

    rename mspaint.exe(the Win7 one) to mspaint.exe.bak

    c:\windows\system32\en-us

    rename mspaint.exe.mui(Win7) to mspaint.exe.bak

If you are running 64 bit, you need to do the same thing to the same files in Windows\syswow64 and Windows\syswow64\en-us too

copy the Vista files of the same names to those same locations.

    Enjoy.

If it doesnt work, you STILL have a permissions issue and I need to see it to fix.  There are also several tools that will reset default administrator privelege permission available, which may solve your problem as well.

Okay, done all that, still no go. I've never used remote assistance before, so I'll have to go with that.

  • I think this is a good alternative. http://www.gimp.org/

OP explicitly said they weren't asking for alternatives... and honestly, I run ubuntu and still use mspaint (emulated with wine). It's quick and gets the job done (when it's working, obviously). That, and emulating irfanview gets 99% of my image needs completed quickly.
  • Ah. Whoops, sorry.

I have no idea, best to use Remote Assistance.
  • Okay, got everything fixed thanks to James, thanks a lot, man! Paul's right, if anyone needs PC help, go to James, he freaking rules all. So James, if you need any art stuff done, I'll definitely help!

Thanks to all who posted too.
