You've inspired me to try to do the same, beat as many games as I can, at least one a day for 2012. Sure, one of my goals this year is that I wanted to play more, much more, than last year, even topping 2003 if I can, but I think your idea is great for motivation. Now, I don't know how well I can keep up with this challenge, but will try to give it my all, if anything it'll get me playing more and I know it'll be fun, and maybe I'll beat a few new titles this year that I never had before. What will make this challenge a little more difficult for me is that I strive for perfection (or close to it), sometimes I'll end up playing a game more than a few times until I am satisfied with the end results. So far, knocked off Super Mario Bros. and SMB2, next up tonight, SMB3. But after that, I'm still uncertain. Now an idea I had would've been to first play every title that I originally owned back when I first had an NES long ago, but I don't yet have all of those ones in my current collection, so will take 'em down as whatever I feel like playing each day. Want to knock down complete series together, Super Mario games first, then I got the Ninja Gaiden, Contra, and TMNT trilogies, but don't want to hit up incomplete ones just yet, Megaman, Castlevania, Double Dragon, Zelda, want to wait, if I can, so I can play them back to back. But could probably hit up single titles, particularly some of the shorter easier games, will see.
I ended up rage quitting The Lion King on the Genesis because I died too many times. So I feel your pain. Then when I looked at the clock, it was 10:00PM (central time) and I was like, "Crap, I gotta pick a short game..." so I played Super Dodgeball on the NES. =3 It kinda stinks that I already used a short game, but there's plenty more out there, I guess.
Mmmmm Super Dodgeball, personal favorite, and if I ever did get an arcade cab that would be hopefully my first -- random pain from above and below, shame the NES game is so easy even on hard. Yesterday I finally after too long got the Gameboy import, it's much harder than the NES game but same style (1on1, 1P, and 'bean ball' modes.)
I've wanted it and Samurai Spirits 3 GB since the 90s, but I won't buy from Japan as the shipping is murder tracked/registered and they've wanted a hefty price on them beyond reason at least, got lucky on a random what the hell moment last week and some American in NJ put it up for $10shipped so yeah -- rapid fire paid a BIN on that one.
*sigh* So I haven't slept in about two days. XD I stayed up from 11:00PM - 3:00PM playing Shining Force on the Genesis. I wanted to beat it by today, and even though I was at the VERY END, I had enough... so I kept trying to find a quick and easy NES game to beat. For some reason I was having a tough time with Mario (sleep deprivation kills basic gaming skills) but for some reason I had better luck with Kirby...
So just out of curiosity, are you tracking the date by the current time, or do you have to sleep for the "day" to end? I just ask because one of my friends goes by his sleep pattern, whereas I count it as the next day if I beat the game after midnight. If you count it when the clock rolls past midnight, it opens the door to playing something before midnight and beating it after...kinda like how I beat Snake's Revenge at about 1 am (making it Jan. 2 for my personal list), but most of the work was done through the evening.
I'm actually trying to decide that right now, honestly... It seems like I could just stay up later to "cheat" my way through beating it a certain day, but at the same time, that may be required sometime... As of now, I'm going to try to beat each game by midnight, but we'll see where my convictions lie once the time comes, I guess.
Why don't you just try to beat 366 total games this year, regardless of the dates?

That's a thought... but at the same time, if I did that, I know I'd try to procrastinate.
Day 7. Ugh, I'm pissed. My sister stole my laptop and ran down its battery so it died while I was recording the (crappy) footage. So it's not even the whole Ganon battle. Whatever, I guess I showed enough...
So... I'm no longer doing YouTube videos. They take far too much time... About an extra 30 minutes, which I'd rather apply elsewhere. If you want proof, PM me or something.
Funny, but here I was all gung ho about it to begin with, but at the same time knew I wouldn't be able to do it for long, but didn't think it'd stop after SMB3 on my third day, but haven't even played a game since. My mom saw my frustration trying to record that one and she told me its probably because I'm making too much a big deal out of it, taking it all too seriously, turning it into work, asking me why I'm making videos anyway, that maybe its causing me to not enjoy them as much, I agreed with her and wondered to myself, what the hell you recording them for anyway, who's going to watch them, I sure the heck ain't going to (I don't enjoy watching myself play a game for long, its boring and repetitive since I just got through doing it), and its not as if I need to prove myself, hell I can to that anytime I want because unless I lose the ability of using my hands or my sight or something else needed for such I can repeat such gaming sessions again and again, and I know better each time the more I play them.
But also, lately, even though I do enjoy playing games, I've found more enjoyment and relaxation from cross-stitching so just happen to be doing that more currently, but will get back to the gaming soon. Gotta find me some balance somewhere between them both.
This is awesome man! Are you going to face games such as, Ninja gaiden trilogy, battletoads, ghosts n goblins? Also for games like ghosts n goblins, do you have to beat it twice for the real ending or just the once?

That's what I started thinking in regards to the video. They were getting next to no views (non hit 100) and they were adding 30 minutes to an hour into my day. I didn't think there was a point. I'm an honest person. If someone doesn't believe me, I can prove it by taking a picture, but in the end is it that big of a deal? I'm doing it because I want to and for many personal reasons, not to impress other people.

I plan on doing Ghosts 'n Goblins - I've beaten it before and I thoroughly enjoy it. The second time through is different enough to be considered different (more enemies, harder enemies, etc) and you have to beat it twice to get the real ending, so I think you have to beat it twice.
I beat a game at 1:00AM and another just before 11:00AM. I hope to knock out a first-time-completion tonight. So far, every game I've played, I've beaten, excluding Shining Force.
How is it going so far, any time management problems come up? Do you foresee this changing how you enjoy gaming now?
Driving all day heading back to college was definitely the hardest time management problem to come up so far. I had to sacrifice a short game (The Little Mermaid) in order to complete the game in time.
Do I foresee it changing my enjoyment of gaming? Right now, it has improved it. So if anything, it'll only be positive influences. Especially if I can keep it up for the rest of the year.
Nice one on beating Captain Comic -- that's not an easy task. Always had a fondness for that game, ever since renting it in the early 1990s and almost, but not quite, beating it.
When I discovered emulation a few years later, I was excited to play it again, but at that time there was no good dump of CC. I ended up buying a copy off Ebay in 1999 -- it was the first video game I ever bought on Ebay, actually -- but couldn't get it to work until I did the 10NES mod.
So there were a few hurdles along the way, but that made defeating it at last all the more satisfying. It's still probably my favorite unlicensed NES game.

That's a really nice story. I'd have to agree that it's a pretty decent game - much better than the rest of Color Dream's atrocities. From what I understand, it was not originally their game, but it was a port of some game for a computer console. I could be wrong, though.

Yep, it was a port of a DOS game. I didn't play the original enough to systematically compare, but it was definitely more "raw"-looking and sounding, and the presentation (at least) was hugely improved in the NES version.

Man, I never update this thread. I need to.
