I seem to remember spending a lot of time trying to find the hardest games for the NES. I'll tell you this...both Ikari Warriors were pretty far up there. My two worst nightmares were Conan and Dragon's Lair.

Yes Wiz, Conan.
Conan was INSANE! I personally like the game, but even I got frustrated with it for a while. I did beat it eventually though.
What about Double Dragon 3. I can't even make it out of the 1st room at the very beging of the game, sometimes. I have gotten farther, but man that tish is hard. Might not make the top 10.
Deadly Towers is an extremely easy game, compared to others I've beaten
I never said it was hard, but I think it's tedious and annoying.
Yeah, just think of it as a cheap and poorly executed Zelda clone. All you have to do is map out the dungeons and get items to help you beat the towers.
Sort of like Zelda, but there are no brain teasers really. Just making maps, and putting in passwords, which can be a bit annoying. If Zelda had a password system, it would probably suck a liittle doing that, but still be a pretty good game
But having beat them both, without any hints or guides, I spent much more time on Zelda, it's not even a close comparison.

I got it when I was 15 or so, and had no problems. I never beat it, but I got far enough into the game that it rewarded me with a continue. Think that's at the second last level. Honestly, I think Double Dragon II is harder, it's just that DDIII has no continues until you get that one very late in the game. Plus the lack of actual lives makes it kind of artificially tough, but it's doable with practice.
The Double Dragons are only super hard until you learn to spam the Elbow (DD), Hyper Knee (DDII) and the Spin Kick (DDIII). After you get good at those moves they aren't so tough!

Double Dragon III is pretty tough. It requires a good bit of endurance (plenty of stages where it seems the enemy onslaught is endless). The very last room in the game with the three mummies and the final boss chick gives me the most trouble. I think I have only actually finished it once or twice, but can at least get to that point pretty regularly.

Holy Diver's relentless... and no one talks about it. It's technically Famicom, but still.
@ Nightowl: That game is hard as fuck! It's like Castlevania on steroids.
The fact that you've played it just made my day. I've never beaten it... I've only gotten to the fifth level. How far have you gotten before?

Silver Surfer wouldn't crack my top 10. It's hard, but it's doable with enough practice.
I just beat Silver Surfer and completely agree with Wizard. Its not nearly as bad as it has a rep for being.
I think more of "tedious" games that are convoluted/cumbersome (usually due to crappy programming/conceptualization), like Deadly Towers.
