Most Underrated NES games

How about some of the most underrated games out there? I just came across Shatterhand, and while the cover art is cheesy, it is a really good game. Another that I didnt think would be very good is Rescue Rangers. I bought it for the kids, but it is pretty good! I have also been enjoying Shadow of the Ninja and Lunar Pool. How about you all?

  • One that I always thought was fun is Fire n' Ice. People don't really talk alot about it other than that it's hard to get a hold of for a decent price.
  • Fire 'n Ice is one of my favorite games. I would have said that, but I guess my other game I would say is Little Samson. Sure it's popular among collectors because of its rarity, but most non-collectors have no idea of how much fun it is.
  • I often think some of the arcade games don't get as much mention in "best" lists as they should, maybe because they had releases prior to the NES, like Snake Rattle N Roll, a personal favorite, and Bubble Bobble, a game I downright love.
  • still sticking with Solar Jetman and Heavy Barrel.

  • "Fisher Price Perfect Fit" FTW!!!!
  • I have found that almost any game can be fun if you give it a chance and stick with it. Some of my personal faves are Cliffhanger, Superman, Conan, Low G Man, both Wizardry's, Predator, and Romance of the Three Kingdoms II, among others. If you play the game and your first thought is "This game blows sweaty llama nutsack," I suggest you play the game for a bit anyway. In 2 minutes a game seems like utter shit, but after 2 hours, you just can't stop playing!
  • Mmmm.... llama nutsack... my favorite

Jeez, it must be 5 in the morning image

  • Metal Storm is a really good game that no one ever talks about.
  • i personally like all the puzzle type games , like adventures of lolo series, fire and ice, tetris, klax (super fun), qix, palamedes. and so on....
  • You forgot Solomon's Key! image
  • Did anybody say Little Samson? I nominate Little Samson.

Also, MC Kids is another of my favorites.
  • I do love me some MC Kids, fun game.

  • my two favs were already picked, little samson and fire n' ice.
    MCkids was pretty fun.
  • I know I already posted for a game, but I want to add Shatterhand. Great game you can get for very cheap, and it's great fun.
  • Agreed on all so far. My contribution:

Micro Machines (unlicensed games get no love)

    Alfred Chicken

    Little Nemo

Panic Restaurant (can you tell I'm fond of platformers)

Zombie Nation (you actually need to cause wanton destruction to the city to power-up)

Gun-Nac (although widely regarded as the system's best shmup, a scarce sleeper)

Spelunker (Much maligned, but I like it. Wiz, if you like Conan you'll like this one lol)

  • Adventures of Lolo series
    Fire 'n Ice
    Kabuki Quantum Fighter
    Street Fighter 2010
  • Dangevin,

Have you ever beaten Gun Nac? I have played many times and I can get to the last level but it's nearly impossible, NO it is impossible. I think it's built for the quarter eaters in the arcade like most flying shooters it just keeps getting harder and harder only at home it's free but the difficulty is still there.

    ~E~
  • I have beaten it, but I had to set it to easy mode image On normal mode I can't make it past the "prominence stage" where the crazy solar flares a la Quick Man block you front and rear. I get hit by one of them sideways sperm and lose my powerups, the it's all over, there's no room to maneuver out of the way of bullets.

That said I was extremely happy with the difficulty curve though, for a shmup it was really masterfully done in that respect. Talk about quarter eaters, games like Raiden were built to immolate you before you were halfway through the first round image

I forget whether the final boss was a cake boss or not...I just remember having the most trouble with the money stage boss with those randomly exploding floor tiles. Gah.

Sivak: I thought I was going to love KQF when I was a kid after reading the teaser in one of the Nintendo Powers, but I found it lacking in depth. Sprites were kinda small too.

  • All you who've played and love Gun-Nac should sink some time into Zanac - the game it's parodying. They're both made by Compile, but as good as Gun-Nac is, Zanac gets the edge for best vertical shmup on the NES.
  • I'm the biggest fan of Legacy of the Wizard I've ever known and I'll take every opportunity to shine light on this oft looked over game.
Legacy is a huge platforming dungeon crawler that requires you to either map out the dungeon, or have pretty sharp memory (or cheat).  It boasts 5 playable characters, all with attributes and different items they can equip.  Then there's the music.  Right up there with the best on NES, nay the best in all of gaming.  It is that catchy.
The only downside, and what I feel scares people away is that Legacy is incredibly daunting at first.  It is not at all easy to get familiar with the dungeon, the characters, the (many) items, etc - but once you do, you'll discover one of the greatest, most rewarding and underrated games ever.
  • Reminds me of ShadowGate but at least I have a book for that one. Did Legacy ever have a hint book like the below? Oh Dain...

  • No hint book for this one unfortunately, but I know it was mentioned a couple times in Nintendo Power.  I am not sure if the section is part of Classified Information or not, but the section with questions like "How do I get past....?" and then a short solution with some screenshots.  Having the instruction book helps a lot though image
  • It seems I see a lot of people dislike Fester's Quest.  I find it to be one of my favorite titles for the NES.  It seems I see a lot of reviews bashing the game.

Counsellor's Corner was what I was thinking of
  • Mc Kids Bucky O Hare Rollergames
  • Rollergames

Really?  I have had this for a while and never fired it up once.  It's one of those sports-events type games right?  Like World Games or American Gladiators?

  • Some of my Favourite NES games are McDonaldland, Captain Skyhawk, Digger T.Rock, Terminator 2: Judgement Day & New Ghostbusters 2.

The last 3 I've yet to complete but I've come very close a few times on T2.

  • Captain Skyhawk is indeed a great game and pretty satisfying once you are able to finish it.
Rare had it going on as far as NES games go.

Hey has anyone mentioned PinBot yet?
Also from Rare, and I'll be damned if it isn't the single best pinball sim I have ever played.
  • I played 2 player Lunar Pool a lot when I was younger.

Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers is really fun to play with the kids. I'm pretty sure you can pick up the other player.  This is good when your son cant get past a cactus or something.
