What are you Top Underrated NES Titles?

I just got a New Ghostbusters 2 cart.  It is an okay game, but it made me put in the Activision Ghostbusters 2 cart, and I forgot just how over looked that game was.

I had it 'back in the day' and seemed to be the only one of my friends who owned it.  It was always great trade bait, as people always seemed to like playing it and were willing to 'swap' for a little while.

I also owned Jaws, and much like Ghostbusters 2 it was a great title to put in and have a few minutes of fun with.  The learning curve wasn't so severe, so people could get pretty good at it pretty fast, which is always a good thing!

Let me know your underrated titles!

  • gauntlet, gremlins 2, shinobi , rampage, skate or die 2
  • StarTropics and Pirates!
  • Deja Vu, Shadowgate and Uninvited.
  • North and South, Times of Lore
  • Gemfire - like most Koei games, this one is relatively unknown but its a very fun strategy game for a beginner like myself. Great medieval soundtrack and two gameplay modes..when I first tried this game I literally couldn't put it down and stayed up until 6 am finishing the quest I begun.

Fire N Ice - not just a rare game, one of the few logic games on the NES and a huge departure from the action packed Solomons Key. Although it is technically a one player game, solving the puzzles with friends is even more rewarding. Good set of tunes on here as well.

Abadox - I am biased since this is one of the first NES games I bought but its definitely a good one. It is a space shooter where you travel into a monster's digestive tract. Lots of memorization is required but there is very unique character design and level artwork.

Kid Icarus - I know this is well known but at the time and still today its overshadowed by the IMO inferior Metroid so I count it as underrated. Thrilling game with a great soundtrack - I guess I say that a lot but its true - and a unique setting. When I play this I really feel like I am travelling through the sky despite the linear level design. Damn those Eggplant Wizards though...

Rockin Kats - Good platformer with a neat gimmick. At times it feels weak but the boss battles make up for it by bring downright awesome. Plus everybody wants to be a cat, right?
  • I think Solomon's Key is underrated. Everyone seems to talk about Fire N Ice these days, but very few Solomon's Key. That is backwards, considering Solomon's Key is much more common.
  • Yeah, Solomon's Key is good too and I agree it's not talked about often. The one complaint I have about that game is thatthe learning curve is very steep, one level (I believe it's the 4th but not sure) is either way too hard or I need to revise my strategy.
  • Formula One - Built to Win, 8-bit gran turismo awesomeness

bearcat-doug already mentioned, but Deja Vu is also one of my favorites too

I didn't think it was too bad.  It's good to know the trick to keep continueing on the same screen, although I never used it.  Got pretty far on a camping trip on my birthday, then I got hooked on Donkey Kong again, so it's on my to do list for sure.

I guess I love super tricky games, but with Solomon's Key, you have to act quickly, or your dead.

  • I didn't think of multiplayer games the first time, but Spy vs Spy and Super Off Road are both really fun if you are playing against a friend.
  • Adv. Of lolo

    Baseball stars

    Wheel of fortune

    North and south (already mentioned)

Ring king (mtpo shadows this game that actually is a realistic boxing game)
  • I'm going to second gremlins 2 and fire'n'ice

startropics is underrated?  Huh most nes players I meet love the game to bits.
  • Crystalis

    /end topic

But nah, most Capcom platformers I love, and some don't get as much notice at all.

Ah, I totally forgot about Crystalis, good call there. I got pretty immersed in that one.
  • Gonna have to go with Star Tropics and Shatterhand
  • I have to say Shatterhand. Not in everyones Top 10 but it is in mine =)
  • Toki, Swords & Serpents.
  • does kick master count as underrated?
  • I love Castelian, it's so different, though really really hard. Gyruss is a great shmup-like shooter. M.U.L.E., an Atari original which doesn't get much love on the NES, I second Krunch's nomination of Abadox, both a great shmup and a cherished childhood memory. I like Jurrasic Park on the NES which gets beat on from time to time but I think it's great. Jaws, love Jaws. All the Lolo games, so good. Maniac Mansion, Metal Storm, Puzznic, Power Blade, North and South, mentioned by several here. Short Order and Eggsplode, awesome Power Pad game. Sword Master. I could go on, but I'll spare you.

Hell yea it does. Know one talks about it but its a damn good game.
  • i agree with shatterhand and so also metal storm
  • When this topic comes up I always say Guardian Legend. I can think of few NES games that I enjoyed playing more, but it tends to only get mediocre reviews. I know it showed up on the IGN top 100 list, but so did Skate or Die 2 so that's not necessarily saying much.
  • Crash 'n the Boys and Trojan.

  • Kid Icarus - I know this is well known but at the time and still today its overshadowed by the IMO inferior Metroid so I count it as underrated. Couldn't agree more!  Loved Kid Icarus, and never understood why Metroid was held in such HIGHER regard!  I hated the little 'thieves' who would steal one of your weapons and you'd have to buy it back at the next shop!  Also, those demonds who laughed at you when you screwed up the prize game and ended up getting nothing!

I agree with Super Off Road!  Great TWO player game, but there is a flaw!  I played it with three people just recently (as I never had the 4 score back in the day).  The problem is, you get more money to upgrade depending upon where you place in teh race.  Well, I was a worse player than the other 2 'humans' I was playing with.  Since I could never beat them outright, I never earned as much money as they could, and thus, I could never compete with their expensive upgrades!

    Still, it's a great game!

    Shatterhand is extrememly underrated!!
  • eliminator boat duel
  • Super Dodge Ball... though I dunno if that counts as underrated or not. I don't think Crystalis is underrated as it's quite popular and pretty common (not that rarity has anything to do with it).

I think Faxanadu is underrated. I never beat it as a kid, but it's always had a special place in my gaming heart.
  • Kickle Cubicle... it's a puzzlish game. The controls work well, the puzzles are tough without being overly frustrating, the boss battles are fun and the cutscences are awesome and cause seizers. Defiantly underrated.
