Donkey Kong

What version of Donkey Kong you like??

I'm not doing a Poll about it,  just reply

Mine is the NES and 7800 version (with the sound down or off)

Comments

  • Arcade/MAME then NES then NES Pie edition

Atari 7800 (I've only seen it, but it's basically the NES Version with terrible Sound.
  • with the lack of good console ports Mame or arcade cabinet is numero uno for sure but if you are talking about console version it would probably be colecovision or intellivision they had the closest to arcade graphics and i think all the levels.it is a shame that the nes ports weren't arcade identical the hammers are even in the wrong place, that is almost inexcusable for nintendo to get their own game wrong
  • Yeah, Console versions, MAME and the Arcade Cab isn't fair
  • Having only played the real deal and the NES version, the arcade version is far better. NES still does well since I don't have the cab.
  • NES version until I find a cheap project cab of the arcade version I can fix up to new condition and play forever.
  • Or you could get the dump of the Nintendo themselves restored 'Donkey Kong Original Edition' copyrighted 2 years ago for the UK Wii which has the cement factory restored to it. At that point you're just going to wonder if the 'how high can you go' screen really matters to you as it's pretty damn close to accurate otherwise.
  • I like the nes version myself.

Hey dose anyone know if that nes pie version has a rom out for it?

And if it dose will it work on the powerpak?

    Thanks

    In this thread here:

  • SNSTAY-- It's not actually the pie factory, hate people calling it that but I get why.

And if you had read my thread, then yes, it's out there, and NINTENDO themselves released it no less on the Wii Virtual Console in Europe. Some smart hackers got a hold of the thing and they gutted the ROM out of the encrypted Wii file from my understanding. I've used the game myself in this format, and it's copyrighted Nintendo 2010.

Why screw around with IPS files, play the REAL THING.
  • I have all 3 DK games on my cocktail. I really like playing DK3, as it's funner/harder with a joystick. I play the piss out of Super Pac-Man too. As the 1st DK goes...yup, arcade of some form hands down.
  • Im going to cheat and say DK Classics... I like them both.
  • has anyone taken a good luck at the DK3 flyer?

...pretty bad color choice for that pot...
  • Hey thanks, i took the lazy way and googled it, found it, put it on the powerpak, and it worked fine.

And as for what its called, maybe ill start calling it "the secret non nes second level"

but i dont think it will catvh on

    Thanks for the help

    *facepalm*

  • By the way... Fan of Mario Bros? Hate the conversion of that for the NES too? During the NES lifetime in the PAL area only Nintendo corrected the game and added in the missing stuff from the arcade title such as those intro screens and a bit more detailing to the creatures. They called it Mario Bros Classic.

I'd consider googling that and throwing it up on your powerpak too.

Here's a website with side by side images of much of the upgrades/visual changes the Europeans got on this one back in 1993.  http://qbob.free.fr/releases/marioc/index.html

Oh also, that DKOE game, retrozone sells it for around $25 if I remember right.  A non-repro as it's an original put on original parts, no cart death required.
  • While this isn't a true version of the game, my favorite version would have to be the arcade machine in Donkey Kong 64. That's what introduced me to the Donkey Kong classic. Eventually, I played that just as much - if not more - than the actual game. In fact, that's the only reason I kept booting it up even after completing the game. I guess, in retrospect, that was my fortaste into retro gaming... and here I am. I was actually disappointed years later when I got Donkey Kong for my NES that it didn't have that pie factory level. I still need to go to RetroUSB and get that.

is this original edition easy to find on the internets???

    Edit: Nevermind I found it
  • The Game Boy version, by far.
  • the how high can you get screen is the best part of the whole game. it is like the ultimate innuendo
  • Donkey Kong NES

    Donkey Kong 2 NES

    Donkey Kong Country SNES
  • I like the original GB Donkey Kong. Very fun.
  • The D2K arcade version.
  • Dk 3 hands down,

The Japanese FDS version is called Kaettekita Mario Bros., by the way.  It is a rather large slice of awesome, and I assume it is the same as the European release, sans the ads.  A link to a video is posted below.

  • Sort of...this is Classic Mario Bros. You decide.

Not sure why the fool who did this threw in a modern piece of music over it, so ignore that. The one you linked lacks the introduction transition screens when a new enemy appears.
  • Im going to say donkey kong country 2
  • 5200 version (ported from Atari XE/XL) is the only one I have that has all four arcade levels, so it is my favorite. Intellivision will soon have the best port with upcoming homebrew D2K Arcade coming out. It has all 4 arcade levels, plus 3 new ones. Can't wait.
  • I like the Atari 800XL version. It has the pie factory in it. To be fair, though, I haven't played other versions so much.
