Resident Evil Operations Raccoon City

  • Shame that Capcom showed their true colors at the time towards Nintendo that stuck around from the N64 through the Cube. Anyone recall the Capcom 5? 5 Games promised, in the end 2, technically seeing what they did 1 1/2 came up. PN03 was the exclusive, and then RE4 was supposed to be too. Instead Capcom decided to wait 2 weeks before the Gamecube game was released and put out a worldwide press release of the 'definitive' PS2 version with Ada Wong and more weapons. It may have sold well on Gamecube but it did hurt the sales a lot too because of that convenient timing, which then around there they also canned the other 3 games. That actually was the point in time when I started calling them Crapcom going forward in most cases.

Man I'm hoping it's not a multiplayer game. I love the original Resident Evils so I'm hoping they keep some of that in the game.

This game is a shooter all the way. There are zombies and I have been attacked by WIlliam Birkin as well, but a lot of the enemies are government forces and there is a lot of gunplay. Run and shoot, diving and shooting, hand to hand combat, etc. Its basically only Resident Evil in name and theme. Its decent so far. I think it would be a helluva lot of fun if played online or co-op with friends.

Sounds like a lot of fun; I may have to rent it.

Are there any plans for a Resident Evil that closer resembles the first few installments?

I really doubt it. Resident Evil 6 sounds like it's gonna follow along the Resident Evil 4 and 5 route. Quite honestly, I had a blast with both of those games and if the future of the series is more kickass quality games, how can I complain?

It would be cool to see something along the lines of the Resident Evil remake though. I'm not sure if the odd camera and tank controls would be adopted well these days. In any case, Resident Evil Gears Edition sounds pretty cool. I love some good third person shooters, it's such an underrated genre.

I don't have a PS3 or XBOX so I haven't played any of 5 but I played 4 and loved it. I thought it was the perfect blend of new and old.

It might be a tad overkill but I would love them to recreate 2, 3 and Code Veronica with updated graphics. I loved what they did with the first remake on the Gamecube and wish they would have done the same for the other remakes.

I wouldn't mind seeing a legit Resident Evil 2 remake. It's my favorite of the series. Resident Evil 5 is good despite all of the haters. It's certainly an action game and less of a horror one, but you can't detract the overall quality. It's the kinda game I want to play, if they go for a more horror themed game, I'd love it.  As long as I don't see a repeat of Gun Survivor I'm good.

By the way, couldn't fucking resist, got the PS3 SE with that sign. Hell yeah! Now I'm broke and between paydays, D'Oh!

  • Looks great.
  • I've always been a huge RE fan. In fact, I just spent an entire week speedrunning Resident Evil 2 on N64, just like the good old days. However, I've found myself somewhat turned off by everything beyond Resident Evil 4. I'm just one of those folks who believe that the series has strayed too far from what made it so great to begin with.

I'm right there with you. I miss the puzzles, suspense and challenge that was in the original games. RE4 seems to be the last of that era.

Funny I actually spent my weekend playing Code Veronica on the Gamecube. Not sure how the overall community feels about that title but CV and 2 are my favorites. I preordered CV for the Dreamcast when it came out and man I spent hours playing that game.
  • And I'm the opposite. I hated the bad camera angles, the very slow and robotic broken feeling pivot controls to fake suspense, and the puzzles to me were always like Shadowgate level junk that made no sense at all which all was a turn off. RE4 turned it around but not enough to keep me going. Oddly though I did like much of RE2 and CV on Dreamcast but they were the exceptions. I really do enjoy the 3DS title and as some have said with RE5 being closer to it than RE4 I think it would be a fun one to try out.

That said Raccoon City looks like it could be a pretty fun game, but it's very also anti-RE and more of a third person shooter it appears.

y'know what I don't miss? The fucking spiders! Goddamn I hate spiders. Code Veronica to me, was the first taste of the new direction Resident Evil was taking. It had the over the top action with the blend of the old gameplay. CV had waaay too many issues like that cargo plane thing that kept me from enjoying it initially. My favorite of the series is easily Resident Evil 2, everything meshed really well, I think people discount Nemesis too much, it's an excellent game in it's own right. Other than that, I really dug the GC RE 1, I wish that Capcom would make more of the series similar to that.

I've had RE1(GC), RE2(N64), Codename Veronica (DC), Zero (GC), and 4 (GC) and the only ones I ever enjoyed much to at least knock off half before I got sick of the style was 2 and CV, and CV I took as far as the tyrant fight on the cargo plane, but the game has a bad design thing to me in that you need the bazooka but they don't tell you that, and if you shelve it, and then try and get it from the locker on the plane it's not allowed so you're stuck saved at a fail point as you can't eject him otherwise.  After forgetting and doing that to myself twice in a row I never went back to it as I didn't want to re-do the whole thing a third time.  RE2 I went into the area with spiders and some but not farther.  RE4 I gave up on after the lake thing and the giant in the pen early on as I just didn't like how the game handled much.  So really the ammo/life thing is secondary to me, but I hate with so many undead that easily latch on you get deprived of a lot of ammo.

Nah, you can beat Tyrant with a pistol (with enough ammo). Better guns just make it easier. You just need to weaken him before launching the ejector. If you don't have ammo for anything, you could be stuck. Items and ammo are definitely limited in Resident Evil games, but there are no situations where you should be out of ammo if you are playing the game the way it is designed to be played. You aren't suppose to kill every enemy or even half the enemies.  They are the obstacles to avoid (like bottom-less pits in mario, etc). Its the survival portion of the genre. The whole idea of Survival Horror is limiting your resources, which adds strategy to the game as well. Sure, some of the fear in these games came from dogs busting through windows unexpectedly and whatnot, but the majority of the fear was the fear of death in the game. Since your resources are limited, you don't know when you will find the next herb, ammo, or save point, etc. Unfortunatley the survival part of survival horror is pretty much dead now days because everyone wants to blow everything up and kill everything. Thus, also killing the horror part of the genre (a few cheap scares is the only horror left). RE4 and RE5 especially, provided you with enough ammo and herbs to supply a small army.

Code Veronica is the most underrated game in the entire series. It is in my #3 spot for best RE games. Just barely behind the REmake. RE2 is number one, of course. Code Veronica was the hardest in the entire series. That turned a lot of people off. It was just fantastic and should be given another chance by any RE fan who passed on it back in the day or didn't enoy it back in the day.

I understand that tank controls can be hard to get used to, but an experienced player can juke and weave like a boss. I should upload one of my speed runs one day. I'm like a ninja with the tank controls now days .

I suppose the camera angles don't bother me in the least because I already know where everything is and exactly how the camera is going to change. The camera angles had a lot to do with the horror as well. You could hear something, but couldn't always see it.

To be honest, I don't think the tank controls, fixed camera angles, and other elements unique to the genre are outdated at all. I believe they are survival horror at its purest. There just aren't any survival horror games left anymore.

I can understand not liking a particular genre though. Survival Horror was and always will be a niche genre in my eyes. Resident Evil wasn't popular because the gameplay appealed to a wide audience. I truly think it was the blood, gore and darker tones. You didn't see that nearly as often back in those days. Resident Evil was the "cool" game to play and talk about back when it came out. Its why sales in the series kept declining until RE4 came out and appealed to those outside of the Survival Horror niche. All I'm asking is for someone, somewhere to create some niche survival horror titles again. I would love for it to be Resident Evil, but I'll take anything. Silent Hill keeps trying, but Konami seems to have given up on the series and isn't putting enough effort into it. They just keep getting worse. The best one to come out recently is Fatal Frame for wii and the only released it in Japan. Damn you, Tecmo!!

Edit: Haha, Sam I am with you on the spiders. I used to have my friends play the spider parts because I was scared of them. I have a fear of spiders anyway and giants ones were too much. I even have closed my eyes and had my friends/family members tell me what was going on as I played with my eyes closed through those parts. The REmake spiders were crazy. You walk into the room and it is right above the door. Scariest RE moment in my life when I entered that room.
  • I just beat the game with a friend, anyone who wants someone to play with who is good at the game add me on psn: patstoddard
  • I rarely would avoid I'd kill stuff because I found the controls so bad I struggled horribly trying to evade things. Thankfully it appears in the last set of 3 (4,5, and 3DS) you get plenty of ammo so take down what comes at you fortunately.

I get your argument, and by your terms of what survival horror is, I'd have to admit, I hate the genre then. I would be fine with limited resources if the control was modern and fun with a good camera, I'd also be fine with the tank junk if the rest was ample in supply but together I can't stand it as I never could get used to it at all. That said I've loved the story of the series and all the camp and junk, it's just the play wasn't there for me. Perhaps that's why I like the newer ones. Also Dead Space I think is fair enough to call survival horror, even if it is in the third person shooter type realm. The camera and control are fantastic there, but it doesn't rely deeply like DOOM3 did on every 10-15sec a cheap popup out of nowhere (literally) behind you or out of a wall. DS used lighting and sound exceptionally well within the confines of the environment, and that environment warped to something more sinister as the problems spread through that ship. It worked with faster paced movement, some slow, lots of scares as much not knowing when it was coming, or how to handle it effectively. That game got me even caring about the horror type games again it was that good.
  • Yeah, I agree that Dead Space is in the survival horror category. I suppose I should have specified as a "pure survival horror" or "original survival horror" when I was talking about the early games. I think there are plenty of games that fit in a wider spectrum of the genre for sure.
  • This is on my buy list (1st person RE, with online multi? Yes!) but you know what I really want? I want them to either redo the Resident Evil: Outbreak series OR at least make some new games with that concept. The first one came out before I had the capability to play online and now I really, really want to play a good ol' survival horror game online with friends.

Raccoon City is actually a 3rd person shooter. Hopefully that doesn't disappoint you too much. The more I play this game, the more I like it. It felt a little awkward at first because I was fresh off of MW3. Its had time to really sink in and I'm loving it. I just spent the better part of 6 hours playing co-op with my friend. Fun as shit! Its so much more fun to play the campaign in co-op!

Also, the Outbreak games were good, but they didn't support mics. No mic support killed the online play. It didn't make sense to me, but for some reason they went with no mics. I agree that an Outbreak File #3 would be awesome on a current gen system!

  • Can you play local coop? I'm not even sure if that's a thing anymore, I'm a total dinosaur with current gen games. Getting ready for this made me bust out Resident Evil 2 again.
  • Ah, unfortunately local co-op isn't supported. Which is a little odd to me because the game is built around the multiplayer concept and RE5 supported it. You mentioning breaking out Resident Evil 2 makes me want to break it out as well, haha.
  • Well, I ended up playing through the first three PS1 Resident Evils. I've been playing Resident Evil Raccoon City, haven't played it online yet but I can say that the teammate AI in the single player story mode is really broken and it makes the game more difficult than it should be. One crazy glitch had one of the squad just sitting in a grage shooting endless rounds into a wall while a huge pitched fight was going on outside. Overall, this game was built for multiplayer I guess, but I can't help but feel they got lazy with the single player.

I hear they're going to add a new campaign mode with more characters to add to the game's short length, that's cool and all but I feel that DLC should have been part of the game to begin with. It seems that more and more, developers are sending unfinished retail games and telling us, "don't worry, we'll have a patch for that here soon". DLC should lengthen a game, the developers shouldn't give us half the game and then the DLC a month or two later, they're just leaving stuff out of full retail copies at this point which is bullshit.

I'm not totally upset with my purchase, it's just that I feel this was a different game with a Resident Evil coat of paint. The sign was cool but I can't help but feel I overpayed. Anyone on the fence, I recommend you wait for a price drop, this thing has alot of problems that are too big to get overlooked. It's fun in places, but I expect alot more from Capcom and this franchise.
  • It was made by Slant 6, so I knew it would have its fair share of problems (see Socom Confrontation). They previously made military shooters in the socom franchise, so I knew it was going to be a Resident Evil game only in name. Still, when you think about it, Umbrella operatives weren't trying to survive and get out like the other main characters in the series. They were there to obtain the virus and data from fighting/facing B.O.W.s. So, it is actually more realistic for this game to be a Shooter since you are playing as Umbrella operatives.

With that said, it was definitely made for multiplayer. Get online and play the campaign mode in co-op. 100x's more fun with actual people than AI. Online multiplayer is pretty fun too.

As for the DLC thing, that is how new age gaming is these days. It blows, but everyone is doing it. It is definitely one of the reasons that I will always remain a retro gamer at heart.  Though in Socom Confrontation, the early DLC and patches were free because they released a broken game. It was way worse than this though, so I doubt we will be as lucky.
  • Looks like I missed out on the Capcom store special, damn, I wanted that bundle
  • Heard somewhere that only 1,000 signs were made. That thing is hitting $70+ regularly on ebay right now (some selling for less and some selling for more). I missed out on the Resident Evil 5 Capcom Direct Bundle and I wasn't going to let it happen again .

I didn't mind the fact that it's a shooter, hell, I love Resident Evil 5. I think my main issue is the AI and I'm sure playing online will solve that. I did feel that the boss fights felt kinda cheap, you never do anything but run from Birkin, the Nemesis fight is more a scripted event and so is the Ada Wong boss fight. You basically just have to stand in a certain spot for the game to register that the fight is over, I would've much preferred a more traditional lifebar boss fight. It's really aggravatiing putting 500 rounds into a boss and dying just to realize that all you had to do was run up alongside to trigger the cutscene to move on.

I'm looking forward to the DLC, I really wish that Capcom would do something crazy with it. How badass would it be if they gave you a shooter scenario like Alpha and Bravo team going guns blazing at the train and mansion courtyard from the first game? I know I'm coming off as very negative about the whole thing, I did have some fun with this and I like the premise, I just keep thinking to myself that it could be so much better since most of the mechanics are sound, just hampered by really odd design decisions.

Ah, I agree with you there. I had fairly low expectations since I am familiar with Slant 6 from the Socom Confrontation days. I agree with the AI, but I only played a little bit of the campaign by myself before deciding that co-op would be the way this thing needed to be played.

Yeah, hopefully the DLC will be nice and improve the online multiplayer as well as the campaign. I like it for sure, but a few things here and there could really help it out.
  • Went ahead and ordered the special edition XBOX 360 version with sign. At least those were still in stock and I can get the pretty sign
  • Nice! I didn't think about that.
