NES Game Screw Driver?

What kind of screw driver do I need to open NES games?

  • 3.8mm security bit. Ebay it. Get the ones made out of steel and aren't black. Some black ones stip very easily, some last a while (Mine have), but everyone who has the steel ones say they're the best. Should be about $3+shipping.
  • I purchased this set:

    I definitely recommend it!

agreed. I've had two or three black ones. Mine stripped out after opening/cleaning about 10 carts each. Total garbage. My steel one is holding up strong after opening > 50 games, and the price difference is negligible at best.

  • Yes avoid the ones sold by MCM at all cost, they are the short black ones.
  • I bought mine from Lukie Games, and have opened over 100 games with no problems.  http://www.lukiegames.com/3-8-mm-security-bit.html
  • I have a black one that I've opened hundreds of games with. I also have a black one that has been loathe to open any games from the very start. If you have a black one and you think it's a goner, try sanding down the end of it a bit. It's been a long time, but I think this is what I did to the first one to make it work right. I'll try this one the second one eventually, I just haven't gotten to it yet.

Haven't tried a steel one yet, the first one has been working fine.

edit: I just tried it, and it appears that my first one just simply is made better. These other ones are just poorly made, I don't think there's anything that can save them.
  • Is there a definitive piece or set to purchase or is it preference?
  • I used a dremel and cutting pad to file out the center of a flat head screw driver. Just have to make sure you do not cut out too much of the blade. I have not had any troubles opening up games or consoles with them [made 2 of them, a 4.5mm and 3.8 mm].
