Small post whoring rant

I see a lot of new people get in the Welcome/New Member section and just post "Welcome to NA" over and over and over again solely to get their post count up. Is there anyway you could mention that thats not what that section is for. I can unerstand veterans getting in there and welcoming new people but when someones only been on the site for 2 weeks and saying welcome to everyone that made a thread that day isnt "welcoming" to me. Yes, it happened just now but it happens often enough for me to complan about it. If Im off basis, then just tell me to shut up and  play nice. But Im just sayin...

  • heh yeah I know who you're talking about just by going to the "Latest Posts" tab.

Something should be said about that IMO.
  • I never even thought about that, kind of a decent point though.

I mostly just use "Latest Posts" and when its cluttered like this, its annoying. I took a screen shot if mods wanna see it. Kinda ridiculous IMO.

  • There's nothing wrong with welcoming people, but welcoming 14 people in a row in a 5 minute span so that it takes up almost the entire "latest posts" list is a bit much IMO.
  • I don't think there is anything whatsoever wrong with welcoming people. I mean whats the whole point of the Welcome Introduce Yourself then? I think your post goes along with the rules a reg thread last week about over posting or posting something that doesn't contribute to the thread. Does posting just one word "Welcome" contribute to the thread? I don't think so, but I like to see things friendly here and I'm sure the newbs do as well.
  • Welcome to NA, Jason!!!
  • Yeah I'm not sure if there needs to be a formal rule on this, but hopefully people should abide by common sense. Don't treat the welcome forum like it's a turbo controller.

I laughed, I find the turbo controller comment pretty damn funny. Thanks for the laugh while I sit in my counseling class.
  • Seriously though, I don't know if it really is a big deal or not as post counts means little on the site. Others may disagree but its not like theres anything really gained by post whoring.

Maybe some peeps are just really friendly?
  • It specifically mentions in the FAQ that it is okay to use the welcome threads as a way to increase your post count... if you're into that sort of thing.

If a user is caught spamming, we'll reset that user's post count to 0 permanently so that it is no longer an issue. Tip: the only acceptible form of post spamming is to welcome new members in the Welcome! Please Introduce Yourself topic area. It's also a way to get your post count higher if it's that important to you."

  • BWahahahahah at the combo breaker picture. I'm not really sure how to feel about this subject considering I still consider myself new to the site. Its not wrong by any means because it is technically a post, but at the same time, you shouldn't be able to welcome people if your own introduction is still on the first or second page of intros.

Anyone check to see if any of these whores post anywhere else besides the Welcome to the site section?
  • I welcome alot of new ppl, but I dont care about my post count at all. I just think its important for ppl to be recognized before they start contributing on the site, so when theres one in the latest posts, I drop in and say hi.

21 out of 171 were outside of the Welcome, Events, and Finders Keepers.

And del, thanks for finding that. I guess its in the rules and allowed but its still excessive. Ill be quiet now (its past my bed time anyways, lol)

    LOL
  • IMHO:  What an unwelcome way to welcome new peeps to the site...... I think threads like this that take up bandwidth and make numerous individuals post in them to clarify whether or not it is a good idea to ban people from doing said topic is a waste.  Like starting a thread titled: Is an Orgy with four a good idea?

Who wouldnt want to post in that thread even if it is only about have four nes systems hooked up to the same tv and all turned on at the same time....!

    Mass chaos!~

I would advise you against that.

    Copied from Del's post.

This is what i remember reading in the FAQ.

  • You mean we have a post count here?

Like others said, it means little to nothing here. No features gained by reaching specific post count levels.

  • im just surprised people care that much about post count in general
  • Post count is so 2 years ago!

To each their own, I suppose.  If someone wants to do it for e-peen ego stroking, fine, that's their perogative.

However, on a site like this, I can see someone boosting their post count to look like an established community member and trying to use that to dupe/scam new members, which is bad.  I know the answer to that is due diligence, but scammers will do what they can to scam.

I don't have the time to search through the FAQ right now, but it would be cool to have a "tips to trading with trustworthy members" section.  Not with the intent to blacklist anyone, but a general "look for these things that indicate a good trade", "look for these things that indicate something shifty is happening".

Unless you REALLY want to be a chubby cherub
  • Who cares about post count?
  • I think anyone that boosts their post count on here would get noticed pretty quickly, and that would just lead to setting it to 0 permanently. Post count really only matters by showing who the more active members are, and that's sometimes helpful when forming an opinion on a topic they post in. Other than that, it doesn't do much IMO.

Like I put in the FAQ, posting to Welcome threads is the one allowed way to increase you post count easily, should you like to. I do not, however, want to see people replying to welcome threads weeks old. I think a week back is fine, but anything older than that might get people a bit annoyed. If it's abused, you'll just get your post count reset to 0.
