You know what's a great feeling? Starting up a game you never played before

There's just something exciting about starting the first step with a game you've never played before, and been curious about for 15, 20 years. Just something about that! Even better, when it happens on a Friday heading into a long weekend. I'm at the point where my flea market and Craigslist wheeling dealing days are over with. Whereas once upon a time a bright early Saturday morning meant driving down to the local flea market, now I can wake up and enjoy playing the latest game that catches my eye on the old library shelf. There's something awesome and satisfying about that.

Best of all is not just playing a game, but playing it to beat it. Staying with a game to the very end. For example, I recently stuck with and beat Lagoon. Even though it's an average game at best, I had a hell lot of fun with it. Been wondering about how it plays for 20+ years now, and now I can cross it off the curiosity list. Now, I recently started up on Paladin's Quest. I'm a couple hours into it, and already enjoying it. I look forward to putting in another 3 to 5 hours or so this coming weekend. After beating PQ, I will put it back on the shelf, and look for the next game to play through. This is utterly satisfying IMO! There's nothing like it. It's so cool playing (through) all these games from your childhood, ones you never ever played before and/or couldn't afford!

Anyone else love this feeling? Prospects of a brand new weekend + finally playing a game you been curious about for X years + beating said game + shelfing it and picking new game to start the cycle all over again = gaming paradise

  • I have been dying to relax and play a game for a couple hours lately, but I just don't have the time Seems like I am constantly busy doing something else. How did you like the final boss fights in Lagoon? It was a little frustrating for me, but after a few tries I got it down. Pretty annoying though that you had to fight all of them over again if you died.

Been trying to get into handheld gaming since I can carry it around with me (and haven't played many of the handheld Zelda games) but damn, still not used to it yet.
  • I completely agree. I've been sifting through my NES stuff lately and played several games that I've been dying to play for years now like: The Krion Conquest and Ultima: Exodus. Just picked up Bucky O'Hare last night which is something I've been super excited to pick up since I found out about it. I used to love the show as a kid and cant wait to try the game now!!

Yeah at first I was like ARGH! about the whole thing. You have to kill 6 bosses in a row. I think I died like 6-7 times before I finally got it. To its credit, the boss battles are awfully short, they're not like 5 minutes long each. Which makes it easier for you to keep keepin' on.

I was eventually able to beat it without using the Life Ball at all. I just equipped the Curing Ring and was good to go. I liken it to Punch Out. At first you get slaughtered, but once you pick up patterns, it's a cakewalk.

Yup. Seeing a shelf lined with 100s of games is like a childhood dream come true. It's almost like being in a Toys R Us aisle with your pick of any game off the shelf! Have fun with Bucky O'Hare. I loved the toy lineup growing up.
  • Paladin's Quest is on my list along with a billion other games, hopefully I can get to it some time this summer. I was about 1/3 of the way through Treasure of the Rudras before I stopped playing because of lack of free time. Plenty of games I would like to start up/finish, but unless I have at least an hour I'd rather not even boot it up.

So true! I enjoy hanging out in my gameroom more than actual game stores these days.
  • When i was a kid I always saw DK Jr math on all those posters but i never saw it in any oft the local toy stores or rental shops. fast forward 25 years and winning a goodwill lot on e bay i finally had a copy in my hand. it did exist all this time. granted it is nothing to pop in and play as there is no ending but it was satisfying none the less to slide it into the toaster and watch the title screen pop up. As an added bonus i play it with my 2 year old daughter who is happy enough to watch the pink DK Jr run around the bottom of the screen she loves it! so it does have some use after all.
  • This thread inspired me to start Chrono Trigger for the first time ever. Just played for about 2 hours and got through the first boss. Really liking this game so far, hope it lives up to it's name.

It's a big deal for me because I play about 1 or 2 retro games a year. Last one I played was Secret of Mana, and probably about 12-15 months ago.
  • I know that feeling well. I keep my games in a constant rotation, and go through that every weekend....it's awesome!

Yeah man, you won't be dissapointed with it, I'd easily put it with Final Fantasy 3 as the best RPG on the console.

I totally get the feeling, a big part of why I collect is that I enjoy picking up those games I never had a chance to play. I still remember seeing games ads in old comic books, stuff like Splatterhouse, it's pretty sweet finally getting the chance to play them.

  • Wow Jone, I envy you for getting to play Chrono Trigger for the first time. So many great memories of that game- it's my favorite of all time. The music is great- I bought the soundtrack off of eBay for my brother one year just because we enjoyed the songs so much.

Chrono Trigger is a great game. Not my favorite, but pretty entertaining. There are so many facets to it, and it's not completely linear.

  • hmm i know what you guys mean. I recently got Zelda II adventures of Links. Played it at a friends house a few times years ago but i never owned it. now im looking forward to beating it..just got it recently to add to my collection
  • I had this luxury with a game I had my sights on since NP featured it. It even made the cover. Volume 22 if I'm not mistaken. That gem was Metal Storm. Played it constantly til I beat it. Glad I finally got to get it.
  • I recently started playing breath of fire for the first time ever. I've been enjoying it quit ea bit so far. I plan on playing earthbound sometime in the near future for the first time as well. I have lots of great snes games that I own and havent really played through yet.

If you are enjoying BoF1, you will definitely enjoy the second. Definitely recommend that one once you finish up the first.

Great, because I just recently started playing FF3 for the first time!

  • Yes...Ive been feeling this way since I started collecting titles I never owned before, even if they may be somewhat mediocre. I recently dove into Secret of Mana and I'm really enjoying it and I'll probably stick with it for a while. Also Blood Omen Legacy of Kain on the ps1.
  • I just recently played and beat the first Dragon Warrior. I've played later ones in the line, but never played the original.

I gotta get a copy of the second one first haha
  • There are so many games on my shelf that I haven't played and can't wait to dive into. Gotta finish up the few games I am currently playing before jumping into the others though.
  • Bucky o hare is amazing. played it through last year or so for the first time and loved every minute of it!

aquiring those few games you have been curious about and never played and actually finishing them is a great feeling.

ive been playing alot of saturn imports lately, and I am finishing very few of the really hard shooters. I know if I ever conquer them it will be a moment of great satisfaction and pride. When you can cake most nes/shooters and barely get through saturn shooters, you know your in for a rough ride lol
  • Yeah it's an awesome feeling to start to play a game for the first time, especially if it's a game you have been waiting for to play. There are some exceptions of course. For example, it's not such a great feeling to play Robin Hood or Xevious for the first time..

  • One I've been interested in since I was a kid: Ninja Gaiden. Particularly number 2. I had the NP strategy guide as a kid and read it as often as every other NP I had. Which is to say, I rotated through the first 50 issues over and over and over..... I've always been curious, and lately I've been getting more and more interested. But it's a bit pricey for me, generally, and I just haven't picked it up yet.

But I am really looking forward to it! One of these days, things will align, and I'm going to play the crap out of that game!

I'm really bummed out, I started chrono trigger for the first time and was loving it, then I got to the part where you have to hold both l+r and a at the same time on the computer and realized my L button doesn't work. So I've had to put it on hold. It also make Final Fantasy 3 a pain in the ass not being able to escape battles.

  • I got that feeling a few weeks ago when I played Dragon Spirit for the first time. It sure beat the hell out of Star Voyager. No big loss since I only paid $3 for it, but since I never figured out what I was doing after playing it for a week I'm surprised I had enough self control to return it rather than smash it.
  • Just got Soul Blazer after wanting it for 20 years. Dang it is really good. Even better when I got a good deal on it!
  • ^ Wait til you try out Illusion of Gaia. IMO, it's even better than Soul Blazer

You realize that you can remap button configurations on most emulators, correct?  If your default L button isn't working, then remap it to another key.  I know the exact spot you are talking about, in 2300 AD Proto Dome where you're trying to unlock the door.

  • I've been on this kick lately where I'm trying to buy all the games I wanted as a kid but never got. While some weren't great (Wayne's World for the NES), others I've had a blast with like Duck Tales 2 and Bucky o Hare. It's quite something to know you're about to play something you've been curious about for almost 2 decades.

I'm looking to track down NES Jetsons and Wacky Races, two I've always wanted to try out.
