You know what's a great feeling? Starting up a game you never played before
There's just something exciting about starting the first step with a game you've never played before, and been curious about for 15, 20 years. Just something about that! Even better, when it happens on a Friday heading into a long weekend. I'm at the point where my flea market and Craigslist wheeling dealing days are over with. Whereas once upon a time a bright early Saturday morning meant driving down to the local flea market, now I can wake up and enjoy playing the latest game that catches my eye on the old library shelf. There's something awesome and satisfying about that.
Best of all is not just playing a game, but playing it to beat it. Staying with a game to the very end. For example, I recently stuck with and beat Lagoon. Even though it's an average game at best, I had a hell lot of fun with it. Been wondering about how it plays for 20+ years now, and now I can cross it off the curiosity list. Now, I recently started up on Paladin's Quest. I'm a couple hours into it, and already enjoying it. I look forward to putting in another 3 to 5 hours or so this coming weekend. After beating PQ, I will put it back on the shelf, and look for the next game to play through. This is utterly satisfying IMO! There's nothing like it. It's so cool playing (through) all these games from your childhood, ones you never ever played before and/or couldn't afford!
Anyone else love this feeling? Prospects of a brand new weekend + finally playing a game you been curious about for X years + beating said game + shelfing it and picking new game to start the cycle all over again = gaming paradise

Been trying to get into handheld gaming since I can carry it around with me (and haven't played many of the handheld Zelda games) but damn, still not used to it yet.

I have been dying to relax and play a game for a couple hours lately, but I just don't have the time Seems like I am constantly busy doing something else. How did you like the final boss fights in Lagoon? It was a little frustrating for me, but after a few tries I got it down. Pretty annoying though that you had to fight all of them over again if you died.
Yeah at first I was like ARGH! about the whole thing. You have to kill 6 bosses in a row. I think I died like 6-7 times before I finally got it. To its credit, the boss battles are awfully short, they're not like 5 minutes long each. Which makes it easier for you to keep keepin' on.
I was eventually able to beat it without using the Life Ball at all. I just equipped the Curing Ring and was good to go. I liken it to Punch Out. At first you get slaughtered, but once you pick up patterns, it's a cakewalk.

I completely agree. I've been sifting through my NES stuff lately and played several games that I've been dying to play for years now like: The Krion Conquest and Ultima: Exodus. Just picked up Bucky O'Hare last night which is something I've been super excited to pick up since I found out about it. I used to love the show as a kid and cant wait to try the game now!!
Yup. Seeing a shelf lined with 100s of games is like a childhood dream come true. It's almost like being in a Toys R Us aisle with your pick of any game off the shelf! Have fun with Bucky O'Hare. I loved the toy lineup growing up.

So true! I enjoy hanging out in my gameroom more than actual game stores these days.
It's a big deal for me because I play about 1 or 2 retro games a year. Last one I played was Secret of Mana, and probably about 12-15 months ago.

This thread inspired me to start Chrono Trigger for the first time ever. Just played for about 2 hours and got through the first boss. Really liking this game so far, hope it lives up to it's name.

Yeah man, you won't be dissapointed with it, I'd easily put it with Final Fantasy 3 as the best RPG on the console.
I totally get the feeling, a big part of why I collect is that I enjoy picking up those games I never had a chance to play. I still remember seeing games ads in old comic books, stuff like Splatterhouse, it's pretty sweet finally getting the chance to play them.

Chrono Trigger is a great game. Not my favorite, but pretty entertaining. There are so many facets to it, and it's not completely linear.

I recently started playing breath of fire for the first time ever. I've been enjoying it quit ea bit so far. I plan on playing earthbound sometime in the near future for the first time as well. I have lots of great snes games that I own and havent really played through yet.
If you are enjoying BoF1, you will definitely enjoy the second. Definitely recommend that one once you finish up the first.

I gotta get a copy of the second one first haha
aquiring those few games you have been curious about and never played and actually finishing them is a great feeling.
ive been playing alot of saturn imports lately, and I am finishing very few of the really hard shooters. I know if I ever conquer them it will be a moment of great satisfaction and pride. When you can cake most nes/shooters and barely get through saturn shooters, you know your in for a rough ride lol
But I am really looking forward to it! One of these days, things will align, and I'm going to play the crap out of that game!

I'm really bummed out, I started chrono trigger for the first time and was loving it, then I got to the part where you have to hold both l+r and a at the same time on the computer and realized my L button doesn't work. So I've had to put it on hold. It also make Final Fantasy 3 a pain in the ass not being able to escape battles.

You realize that you can remap button configurations on most emulators, correct? If your default L button isn't working, then remap it to another key. I know the exact spot you are talking about, in 2300 AD Proto Dome where you're trying to unlock the door.
I'm looking to track down NES Jetsons and Wacky Races, two I've always wanted to try out.
