Video Game "Mastery"

  • I like setting myself challenges in Civilization games, such as finding the highest yield base squares to obtain a critical technology (like railroads) before year X. Recently I've done speed runs on Alpha Centauri (highest difficulty) to get the following in 70 turns:

    7 Bases, 26 Population

    2 Wonders

    10 Techs

    Food Cap Lifted

    Supply Crawlers

    Planetary Governor

About to Borehole / Get Treefarms / Have Mineral Cap Lifted

Another favorite of mine would be character creation in games like Arcanum or Fallout 2; I love being able to tweak stats in a way that will match the bonuses I'll get later in the game. It's a great feeling to create an RPG character that plays smoothly and efficiently with as little grinding as possible...
  • I've completed every single possible thing to do in Super Mario RPG. God I love that game.

Did you take any damage from blocking?

    Nope!

  • Let's see games I've mastered...

    Double Dragon II

    Life Force

    Super Mario Bros

    Super Mario Bros 3

    Super Mario World

    Super Punch-Out

    Wave Race 64

    Final Fantasy VII

Probably a few others I can't think of right now

Hell yeah! I love that game and need to play it again. Smithy is going down
  • NES games that I have no-deathed:

    Double Dragon (multiple times)

    Double Dragon 2 (2 times)

Legend of Zelda (1st Quest, multiple times)

Monster in My Pocket (1 time)

    Super C (multiple times)

    Super Mario Bros. (1 time)
  • Definitely Mega Man 2. My all-time favorite game. Got it memorized and can beat it very easily (no deaths, no use of turbo buttons, etc).
  • Mega Man 2 for sure!

Also the first time I ever played Monster in my Pocket I beat it without dieing so I don't know it that is mastery or not.. lol

Oh and I have mastered Battle Kid Fortress of Peril too

    - LoZ: OoT ; Complete the game completely blindfolded the whole time

    - LoZ: OoT ; Not using a sword throughout the whole game.

These are just a couple of them but she has plans for other challenges similar to these.

I mean either she has no life or she's really good at this game.

A challenge thread would be cool too.

Surely your friend was inspired by the blind dude who beat OoT? I recally watching a news/YouTube clip a few months ago!

  • As an adult, I'm perfectly happy just beating a game and shelfing it. Don't really have the time or desire to master one game, would rather play others in the collection.

But growing up as a kid, I tried to get the most "worth" out of each purchase. I can think of:

    Super Mario 64 - 120 Stars

Goldeneye - All cheats, beat game on 00 Agent

Perfect Dark - All cheats, beat game on Perfect

On NES, only game I came close to mastering was Contra. I never no-deathed it, but I did beat it without the 30 lives code. And when you're a kid in 2nd grade, that was a pretty huge accomplishment. Most of my friends didn't think it was possible to beat the game without the code!
  • I have mastered Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers, Castlevania 3, and Super Mario Bros. 3. The first game, Rescue Rangers, I have completed without taking any damage or dying at all. The other two games, have easily beaten without any continues, straight through, all paths with Castlevania 3. Probably could get it down to not dying too if I worked harder, but I just play for fun and having played all three of these games for some many years, it just makes them all so easy. Super Mario Bros. 2 might be up there, as well as Talespin.
  • I've done a no death run on Contra.  One of my best friends did a no death run on Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden......took him 2 months.
  • Chip N Dales is so easy. Years ago i beat that game without loosing any lives, probably on my second try of playing it.
  • Yeah, it is an easy game. But extremely fun. Just like other Capcom Disney games.
  • I played through many of the tony hawk games without ever falling down. Especially tony hawk 3, I would delete the character and start over if they fell down once. haha played that game way too much years ago.
  • Tony Hawk games were great up until the end. In my opinion, the last good one was THUG2.

American Wasteland's gameplay wasn't bad but the story was garbage, Project 8 was complete trash though. I played it and couldn't believe how bland it was.

For some reason American Wasteland felt like something was missing, but I can see that.

I have done a no-death run of Monster Party, actually, but barely did it. So I wouldn't consider it mastery, but it's worth mentioning.

  • theres always room for improvements. speed running, faster is always possible. a realm I know all to well lol

I'm sure it is possible to make an unbeatable time. It'll just take years of practice, I'm sure.

I liked playing american wasteland in freeskate but nothing else about it really :S I tried project 8 and it was so bad I knew the series was dead. I actually sold it. One of 2 games I have ever got rid of because I disliked it that much.

Yeah, man, I don't doubt it... I heard nothing but bad things about it. I didn't even try it! (And that's saying something 'cause I loved THPS and THUG games).
  • I can beat Mega Man X without dying. I'm sure that's pretty common though.

Goldeneye for N64 on 00 Agent years ago.

There's thousands of people that can beat me at Mario Kart 64, but no one I've ever met. (Probably 90% of this forum could though)

Chrono Trigger for SNES - Every ending, item, level 99 characters. Pretty sure I've done everything in this one.

I'm pretty much average I'd say.
  • ^ I think you're selling yourself short by saying you're average. Those are all great accomplishments. You'd be surprised what people haven't accomplished.

Yeah it is an easy game, but that doesn't make one a master at it.
