Fixing Color N64 controller, colored cord part?

I want to do the old switcheroo. I can do the controller. No problem. But how do you get that color part off the cord. I looked on youtube and all I saw was how to fix the alolog stick. I don't want to fudge it up. Any help would be cool. Thanx RASK1904.

    AFAIK, you cant remove it without breaking it. you'd better switch the whole cord.
