New Donkey Kong NES record 3,382,500
Tom set the bar, real, real, high with his score of 3,189,100 from December 2010
But, I am very very lucky, to capture the DK NES record, atleast for now!
Achieved, St. Patty's day early morning hours, score of 3,382,500, was posted in the TG database yesterday.
I'd love to see more of us submitting records at TG, hardly as much action around there as there used to be. Mostly why I'm posting, is figured many of you would enjoy hearing about this stuff, and maybe this will stir up more competitors in NES Donkey Kong!

Would be cool to get at least get some of you to sign up there

Very nice JD! Are you going to post the video anywhere, I'd love to see it.
This game made it to level 128.
I could do that when I get a full game with a Kill Screen. I would hate to go to all that work, of cutting out all the good parts, to just beat it on another attempt. And, when I get the kill screen, I'm done playing it for good!
When I do, for sure, there will be some entertaining parts, because, I usually have some very hairy escapes on the Rivet board.

Awesome score, man! Much congratulations. You don't happen to have a link to a video of your record setting score that you could copy n' paste here, do you?
I don't have anything uploaded to youtube yet, and would like to actually get a kill screen before I actually go through all that work.
If you are looking for something fun to watch, no one does videos better than Tom Votava. This is currently the only kill screen on NES donkey Kong:

As an added bonus, Charlie Sheen actually does the commentary.
Edit: Oh and JD I'm going to have a couple of my DK buddies come take a look at your DK cart board. Just wanna make sure there isn't a conspiracy theory going on here.
So, can someone tell me more about Twin Galaxies? There's a few games I'd like to try to get a record at. I'm sure it'll take much discipline and practice, though. (If anyone wants to respond to this, I guess PMing me would be better than posting and hijacking this thread).

Twin Galaxies was originally just an arcade that tracked scores, eventually they just kept getting more noteriety, and eventually Guinness recognized them as the autority on video game scores.
Check out the wikipedia page if you want to know details and history.

The basics of making a recording are pretty simple, just hook up your console to a VCR or DVD recorder, but make sure you get 15 or so seconds of "dead space" before turning your console on, and shutting it off when the run is over. For normal platform games, you cannot press "pause", so just keep that in mind. Also leeching is banned, and some games have additional special rules.
If you get signed up at TG, sending in a record to get verified, can take a month or two, but for NES, the Ref does a great Job getting it done very timely. The submission process is done online, and then you print out a form to sign and mail with the recordings.
here is a link to the main website for anyone who hasn't checked it out yet. At the very least sign up to checkout the scores, or find out the rules on the games you are thinking of.

nice score! I played a good amount of nes dk until i got a cabinet. The rivet board is hell for me on nes but my "easy" level on the arcade. Congratulations I'm impressed. At what level does the nes version reach it's top speed?
I've noticed that too, there are only 4 foxes, compared to 5 in the arcade, but they seem to be more aggressive and unpredictible to compensate.
I know it the arcade a fox can only descend a ladder, if you are lower than them, but in the NES version, foxes, will go just about anywhere they feel like going.
Level 5 it "tops" out. But there are always going to be random "good" rivet boards, and also some really really difficult ones. Usually I can clear it with 4 to 5000 on the bonus ticker, but occasionally the foxes will all bunch up and guard the upper left Rivets, and I've taken the bonus timer all the way down to zero a few rare times when clearing.
Congrats of the high score JD!! Thats an impressive feat to say the least. I personally have no time involved in that game and never have even played the first rivet board, lol. I registered on TG a while ago and check back on score every now and then. I might take a crack at a couple but I know I cant get first place. Second or third would make me happy though. I wont reveal the games cause Im sure someone can jump on an annihilate my score, lol. I just havent found that one game Im really good at yet.
So I have to ask, in a pretty straight forward game as DK, how do you amass such a score and yet not hit the Kill Screen? Timer bonus points? Or additional variables?

Thanks! Well, personally I just consider myself an average gamer, with alot of determination. My first experience with TG, was just being curious what the high score was for 1943. When I saw Tom's score, I thought there was no way in hell I would even get half way there.
Also, It's not like I started playing Donkey Kong, and just happened to be good at it. I was terrible to begin with... LOL. The hardest jump for me was going from 250k to 500k. After that, it was just fine tuning, and beating my head against the wall many many times.
I suggest, Instead of trying to find something you are good at, just find a game that you REALLY REALLY enjoy playing. And also, instead of focusing on achieving a record, just shoot to beat your own score. If you do that enough times, the record will come on it's own.
Don't sell yourself short, if you can get third, you aren't far off from being #1.

If you are curious why it's higher than the Arcade score, is because on the NES version, the game goes up to level 133. Where as on the arcade, a kill screen is only 22 levels.
If you are curious why it's higher than Tom's Kill screen video, is because I grabbed both hammers on the Barrel Board on every loop.
Grabbing the hammers is worth maybe an additional 400k to 600k over 132 levels, but on the flip side, it probably increases your odds of death by roughly 15 to 25%, and also can make your game go for over an hour or more longer, so maybe it's 7.5 hours instead of just under 6.
Tom arlready has a super high score, nearly identical to my own, he is more than capable of my score, he just wasn't going for the most points during that run.
The game I want to take a shot at is definitely a game I enjoy. I just recently stumbled on it maybe 6 weeks ago and probably have almost 100 hours in it. I dont play games that long that I dont enjoy.
How many times have you gotten above 2M? Im sure that was a feat in itself?
Excellent job on the record JD! Your score is about 3,200,000 higher than I've ever gotten.
