I know nothing of this game, I'll have to fix that!
I will say that the multiplayer isn't very good, but the fact that it offered 1, 2 or 4 player support does make it a multiplayer RPG that predates SoM. It's not bad single-player though, as long as you like the dungeon-crawler RPG style. Also, the password system sucks nuts. You'll see why if you play it
Final Fantasy 4 also allowed 2 players (just in battle), but it was still there, and I'm pretty sure that was out before SoM as well.
True. FF6 did the same thing.
I guess what I liked so much about SoM was the entire battle system being more action-RPG than menu-based, which really lent itself well to a cooperative multiplayer experience.
I had wanted Secret of Mana for 10 years or so and finally made the purchase a few months back and speant close to 25$. I played it for 3 hours and after that I was just done with it, the controls are loose, the combat system is terrible, and it just wasn't a fun game. Lots of people love it though so maybe Im just different, this is just my opinion on it. The graphics and music were great though, wish I could've enjoyed this one but oh well.
^ you need a new controller then... the controls are FAR from loose. Unsure what you found was terrible about the combat system, but you should play some terrible games, like Lagoon, or Brain Lord. Play it a little more
ETA: also make sure your attack meter is at 100%, and if you've leveled up your weapons, hold the attack button to charge your attacks. Once you learn how to play the game and learn the battle system, it's a fantastic battle system.
I was actually just thinking about this! I enjoy Evermore far more than Mana, and I've played both to the end quite a few times. I'll use the categories from earlier to explain. (Still all just my opinion)
Story - Mana's story was great, but it just reminded me of a lot of other RPGs where the world is going to end and monsters have "returned". Evermore's on the other hand had some really creepy and morbid moments as well as more sarcastic humour. I think I found it easier to identify with characters in the game because they weren't as stereotypical.
Graphics - Evermore wins here if I'm playing with the lights off and looking to get immersed in the world, but Mana takes it if I'm looking for something a little more bright and light hearted. Both good overall.
Music - Mana definitely wins this one as far as tunes getting stuck in your head. However, I liked Evermore's use of music/sound for setting the mood. Neither compares to some of the greats though (Chrono games for example).
The length of the game - It took me a lot less time to get bored of Mana than Evermore. I'm not sure which has more to do, but I remember exploring the worlds and trying to trade all of the items in the marketplace for a long time in Evermore. I always get kind of bored in Mana when it's time to just fly everywhere and grab all the seeds. I think I felt some of the dungeons lacked personality later in the game.
So for me, Evermore wins.
So having the heroines love interest die, an entire community turned into mindless drones, and an antagonist that steals the souls of people isnt creepy and morbid? Or the witty humor of the sprite child? Hmm... methinks you need to replay mana
Oh don't get me wrong, that's plenty creepy, but when I went to the ruins south of Potos(sp?) where Thanatos was and had everyone turned into zombies, it didn't feel as creepy as many other scenes in Evermore (evil forest, creepy freakshow thing, queen commiting suicide). It's definitely just a personal preference, but I think it was due to the colours they used.
Then again, the last time I replayed Mana was on iOS mostly without sound. So I probably should play it again. I need to get a SNES copy again, but I'm hoping to find one for a decent price. I don't think I've seen it for less than $30 recently.
SoM has some dark themes in the story, but it's overall graphic design and presentation isn't creepy at all. Bright, cheerful colors as far as the eye can see. Even the undead enemies look intentionally goofy.
I gotta say, a lot of the arguments here are the same exact thing my friend and I say to each other. Especially about the graphics. How Mana is a much more bright and colorful game where as Evermore is a dark and morbid game.
I've never had one complaint about the controls or combat system on Mana. I absolutely love it. And i know it's hard to compare music because everything in mana has awesome music where Evermore is more ambient sound. I cant think of any music in Mana that i didn't like or didn't get stuck in my head. Even the music that plays in Potos village once you get banished. The Music in Kakara Desert, Down in the Dwarf Village, and of course the battle with Darklich.
The multiplayer was awesome, drop in drop out.
There was just so much good memorable stuff in Mana that i just didn't find with Evermore.
Flammie, Cannon Travel, The way the world changes, The hidden face in the middle of the ocean that serves no purpose, The humor of the sprite child.

Multiplayer rpg's before there was such a thing.
Swords & Serpents says hello.
