Paypal gifting question

Has anybody here ever been messed with by Paypal for accepting too much money as a gift while trying to avoid fees?  I ask because, Im looking to avoid fees with the sale of my SNES boxes that I picked up by selling here instead of Ebay, but I dont want Paypal to close my account or anything cuz its my lifeline.

  • I know a few people here have. Pretty sure they send you a warning first though.
  • ya it happens sometimes like dave said, but iv done prob over 200 gifts and iv never had any issue so idk how it works lol
  • Thanks for the info fellas.
  • I'm pretty sure you have to move some big-time money via gift to get in any kind of potential trouble with PayPal.

Define "big-time."  Im looking at a possible $500 transaction.
  • nah just have write Happy Anniversary or something in the transaction notes and make sure its not a weird amount of $. If its like $496.23 and it says that and someone actually audits it, yea, you will prolly get the "You are abusing Paypal" email and they will hit you with back fees from any recent "gift" payment. Happened to me a few times.
  • I would think only thousands or tens of thousands would possibly set off alarms. a few hundred dollars could be someone sending you money for bills or rent. that is why they have a gift option right?

    LOL  Great idea!
  • There is a limit on how much you can gift to one person per year per the IRS if you are in the US. I am sure if you trip that one they will contact you. I'm pretty sure it is over $10k though.

    Interesting.

  • So don't use the gift option.... There's 3 other options under the Personal tab that will not cause a fee, "payment owed", "living expense", and "other" (not sure about the cash advance one), provided the senders account is set up right.
  • Looks like the current limit is $13,000 per year per person for gifting before taxes kick in. http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=108139,00.html
  • Husband + wife = 26k
  • You know that this is a violation of the terms of service you agreed to right? The total fees on $500 would be $15.24, a steal for the service they provide.
  • If paypal is your lifeline, I agree it's kind of crappy that you don't feel they deserve any sort of compensation for that service.

To answer your question, I think a sure fire way to get paypal on your case is if you ask people to pay you in gift, other than .01 of it so that you can print the mailing label. That sets red flags a flying, so don't do that.
  • Paypal's cut is money well spent for the added security of having seller protection. I say pay it and be glad.
  • some of PayPal's fees are high same with ebay
  • stupid paypal raised the moeny conversion fee from two point something to three point something percent... arrghh.
