Dragon Quest VI Question

I've been on a Dragon Quest binge over the last few days.  I'm currently playing through Dragon Quest 2 and Dragon Quest 3.  Loving both of them.  After finishing one of these up I'm wanting to play through Dragon Quest VI.  And I'm wondering which version is better to play?  The SNES version?  Or the DS one?  Anyone played both and are there any real differences in them besides the translations?

Comments

  • Original is always better. I've never played either, but one can assume they butchered it like all the FF remakes on the GBA/DS. If you can play the translated SNES version (or can read Japanese), I'd go with that version.
  • Seconded here with sticking to the original.
  • I've played DQIV on both the NES and the DS and I liked the DS version better (I haven't tried the SNES one though). Was wondering if DQ V and VI were somehow "significantly" enhanced on the DS.
  • I don't think they made Dragon Quest IV for the Snes. And so far everyone's going for the snes version. I'm gonna check and see if there are any new stuff added to the DS version
  • I know with FF4 and 6, Square nerfed the battle engines pretty bad on the GBA, and the DS port of FF3 was completely redone/reworked and had a lot of changes. If the Squeenix merge happened before the GBA port, I'd go with the SNES version first, then check out the GBA title.

Ooops, that's very true, DQIV that was the only one from the first six instalments that didn't make it to the Super Famicom.

  • I just finished the DS version of DQ VI. Can't help you with your question, but I thought the game was pretty awesome. You really ought to play V tho. It's a very unique take on the whole "hero destiny" philosophy of a lot of RPGs.
  • I already played Dragon Quest V and beat it. It's one of my favorites so far. I played a translated version of it on the playstation 2.
  • Definitely do the bonus dungeons for DQ5 and 6 too (assuming you didn't already).
  • haven't done the bonus dungeon on V yet. Haven't played it in a year. But I still have my save file and I have been thinking about loading it up and playing thru it. I also have a request if someone can help. (If I don't find it first) I am wanting the opening battle of Ortega vs the King hydra or whatever it's called. As an animated GIF. I've been looking but so far no luck ><
  • Well I beat Dragon Quest III for the snes and even did the bonus dungeons I got pretty close to max lvl but didn't. I did get a few stats max'd out for all my characters. I am thinking about playing thru it again on the gbc version since that one has another bonus dungeon. But I haven't decided yet. I am no playing Dragon Quest VI on the SNES and I am enjoying it. Only thing I dislike about it is trying to find a place to get class xp.
  • I would go with the original, although the pros and cons between the two might weigh each other out, so it probably don't matter which one you choose. DW1 is a good example. I like the old English in the original, but the grinding was a pain... now with the newer one on gbc, grinding is a lot more balanced and takes less time to do, but they changed the dialog to modern English which kills it for me a little bit (don't ask why, I'm just weird like that).
  • I have played both my self, and personally I have to say that allthough in most instances I'd stick with original, I actually found myself enjoying the DS version over the SNES, soley for the purpose of playing the extra bonus dungeons and stuff that was added to the DS version. I did still enjoy playing it on the SNES too however

    maybe for you...

after playing the GameBoy remakes for 1-3 i'd never go back to the NES versions. i definitely prefered the DS remake of DQ IV to the original as well. never played the SFC version of DQ V, but the DS version was great. haven't played VI yet, almost started to play it after finishing V but made the mistake of playing IX instead (holy hell that game sucks, and i've been a DW/DQ fan for almost 25 years).

then again, being made for the SFC, i don't think the difference between the remakes and originals would be as great as it is with the NES games. either way, the remakes aren't "butchered".

  • The Dragon Quest VI remake for DS is not as significantly different than IV and V were. So if you'd rather play the original, go ahead. Just be aware that the translation patch is only 99% and there are a couple things that will bug out the game (like backing out of menus with the B button).

You can't earn job points if you're fighting inferior monsters, so if you're not gaining job levels then move on to the next area. The best place to grind for job points is underwater, once you reach that point in the game. Monsters there always give a job point, regardless of your level.

This.  Much preferred DS version.  For some reason I absolutely adored all of the DS remakes for their use of 2D sprites on 3D backgrounds.  Brought back awesome Grandia memories.  An improvement on the original in my opinion.

  • I'm pretty far in to DQ6 now. Going after the armor pieces at the moment.
