NES Games that employ parallax perspective

I'm always impressed when I see NES games employ parallax perspective.

I can think of:

3D World Runner

Castleian

Kirby's Adventure (in the few boards where you're running alonside a tower, just like Castelian)

Battletoads and Double Dragon (the second board's floor)

Rad Racer (I think, kinda?)

Anyone?

Comments

  • There's Totally Rad, it does it on the first stage.

James Bond Jr. does this as well, on the surface of stage 1 though.
  • Oh! You're right, I played Totally Rad as a kid, it uses it Sonic The Hedgehog style. I've never played James Bond Jr. - or ever even seen a copy.
  • There's also Joe and Mac, which employs parallax at 6 different screen levels! Foreground, ground, background, mountains, clouds, and sky!
  • Znake rattle an roll? or is that not what you mean

    That's an isometric perspective.

Parallax is two parallel planes moving independently.
  • Kickemaster
  • Metal Storm
  • Bucky O'Hare has it in a few subtle ways in the cave level where you roll on the boulders.

    Mega Man 6.

Sword Master (or Castle of Dragon, I don't remember - maybe both?)

    Vice Project Doom

    Mitsume Ga Tooru

That's all I can think of.
  • Regular Battletoads uses parallax effects as well in a few places, even does it for vertical scrolling in level 2.

    edit: bucky been mentioned
  • It's kind of interesting to note that just about every game that features parallax scrolling is also among the best NES games. Of course, that's not always the case, but it's a general trend that seems to be proving itself true.

The NES has 1 plane, though you can scroll lines independently so you can do parallax effects.

    You know what I mean.

They emulate having multiple planes to induce the effect of parallax (where points move at different rates based on the relative distance between the planes).

  • Shatterhand (Section B)

    Ninja Gaiden III (forest level)
  • I wasn't saying your were wrong Nathan
  • There's also Panic Restaurant at the fish catching level. That alone makes it look very advanced for an NES game. EIM made that game, and seem to have developed only two NES titles, not including Superman/Sunman.

Off topic:  NESCartDB and Wikipedia seem to have different opinions on who developed games, so who'd be more correct?

What part of Mega Man 6 has parallax scrolling?

  • Does the MM2 title screen count?
  • Mach Rider count?
  • What about Batman: Return of the Joker?
  • Metal Storm.

That gem from Irem has parallax scrolling throughout the entire game and, yes, it among the best of the NES.
  • Punch out with the water/background, Dragon Warrior 3 with the sky, and honestly probably a ton over all that use it _somewhere_ in their games.
  • I just found another one, James Bond Jr., on the more obscure end.
