NES advantage to Arcade Control Panel

Okay, this might seem odd.  I'm building an arcade cabinet that will double as a storage area for my 100-ish NES games.

It's not a MAME cabinet, so it won't be running off a computer, it will be running off of an NES.  What I want to do is rip apart advantage controllers and put them into the control panel, since they're close to exactly what I want and I already have them, plus they have the right adapters already hooked up.

I'm wondering if anyone has any insight as to how to make this happen?  Basically, I'll need more room between the controls and the circut board.  I don't want to just plop two Advantages on top because I don't like the way that looks.  Worst comes to worse, I'll just paint them all black or something so they don't stick out.

Any insight would be appreciated!

P.S.

I've spent hours googling it and it seems all the arcade cabinets that use an actual NES just plopped the advantage controlles on top, the rest are running computers.

  • Dude, I had a similar idea, I will be keeping an eye on your progress
  • hardwire the stock arcade buttons to the advantage circuit board. im sure its not exactly that simple, but thats the direction you should try going in. either that or cut the advantage circuit board to get the right spacing and then solder wires to re-connect the severed traces.
  • get a set of arcade buttons and directional sticks

and wire them to a nes controller

    kinda like this

  • Appreciate the replies guys. I was kind of hoping this has been done before and someone had taken copious pictures through the process. I guess I'll just do this as late in the project I can, and hopefully find a generic controller to test the process on. I have two beat up Advantages, I don't want to sacrifice more than that! Thanks again.
  • dude , if you pay me or another na member i can make you a nes arcade controller , if you have a bunch of broken nes controllers

wire , wood , tools , and other random thing you can make anything

OK , so when you hit "B" on your NES , the physical button has a thin layer of graphite on the bottom

when your button slams down your connecting 2 graphite or copper imbedded wires

if you look at this photo(s) you will see the zigzag of wire that when a button is down the 2 circuit wires connect

you drill 2 wholes on the mother board and solder a wire for both circuit wires then wire them to a button

its hard to tell you over a forum

  • This has been done numerous times before on different scales.

Search the forums for Arcade Advantage or bartop nes arcade.

Pretty sure both guys that did those also did instructibles of their build process.
  • James, appreciate the offer, but I really think this will be a good project to learn on. It's only an 8 button controller, so I think I can learn and get it eventually. I really appreciate the explanation, though. I knew it would require some sort of soldering between the button and PCB, just wasn't sure where to go from there. I'm actually headed out now to see if I can find some off-brand controllers to practice on. Thanks for the help guys!

    P.S.

EvilEyeball if you want to follow this project, I'm starting a worklog for it at http://www.eightbitthrowback.com, should be up some time this afternoon.
  • If you have 2 advantages together, make sure you have one selected on Player 1 in the player 1 port, and the other selected on Player 1 on the player 2 port as well. I tried to put player one on the first port on the first controller and 2 on the second and it took me a while to figure out why it didn't work.
  • hahahaha thanks, I'm actually planning on casing the board off somewhere in the cabinet and I was just thinking about how I'll have to make sure that turbo and slow of are off, etc.

if anyone wants to check out how it's coming i just put it up: http://www.eightbitthrowback.com/arcade
  • Sorry to keep bumping this back up...
