  • Liking these lists so far . You guys are convincing me to play through Diddy Kong Racing now, I've only dabbled with it a few times. Sad that I don't have SW: Shadows of the Empire, Rogue Squadron, Banjo Kazooie, or Mario Party 2/3 on my list. They're super close runner-ups for me in some genres.

aleckermit, Diddy Kong Racing is totally worth a playthrough. I'm a big fan of Mario Kart 64, 1080 Snowboarding, Destruction Derby 64, Beetle Adventure Racing, and Polaris Snocross and I still didn't think twice about giving DKR the top spot for the racing genre.

  • Yeah Diddy Kong Racing makes Mario Kart 64 look pretty bad, and this is coming from someone who bought both brand new at release.

Mario Kart 64 was first, and TONS of fun. It was like a 9/10 or 9.5/10 at the time. Amazing tracks and multiplayer. Plus the ghost races to test your patience.

But Diddy Kong Racing improved on almost everything. Unfortunately it sold poorly because most people weren't familiar with the characters. Ironically enough, Banjo Kazooie and Conker went on to become pretty popular themselves.

Improvements in DKR over Mario Kart:

    1) Single Player x100! There is an "overworld" adventure mode, so it plays like a story. You don't just pick a level, you drive around and find it on the map. It all culminates in an actual boss "fight" (race) at the end of the game, with a bonus world opening up. About as memorable as a single player racing game could be.

    2) Multiple vehicles - Hovercraft / airplane / kart. Mario Kart only had karts.

    3) Unlockable characters - Drumstick / Tick Tock. You got these through racing "ghosts", just like in Mario kart. But unlocking Tick Tock required you to master just about everything, and increased the game's replayability.

Track design is about 50/50 and a matter of preference. Some Mario Kart 64 tracks are pretty amazing, and DKR has nice ones too.

But DKR is a must play for anyone who owns an N64, IMO. I know a lot of people recommend "must plays" for every system, but it is impossible to create a top 15 list on N64 without mentioning DKR. I have it in my top 10 easily, but not sure if everyone is that high on it.

Yeah I really do hate that game that bad.  It was the first Zelda title I gave up on in disgust and sold, which says a lot because I had Zelda for CDI(Link, Faces of Evil.)  I didn't like the 3 day clock, I didn't like the losses going back in time, most of the masks were just stupid to me, and I didn't much like the layout of things from the land to the dungeons or the story much either.  It felt like an amateur crap job, and I still kind of feel as such after learning it was like the training wheels game for Miyamoto's successor as lead to the franchise.  To me it was like a failed learning tool as he did better work after that by leaps and bounds.

Hey it's a good game, it has balance problems for sure with magic, but outside of that the story was kind of fun, the land was pretty big, all the 3D combat with 3D arenas then was unique as a true console first.  I also liked the lighthearted approach to not having to buy every little item in the game or pay to sleep in the Inns because people knew what you were doing on your quest I suppose.  It was just a fun game.

That's funny, the first two reasons are exactly why I like Mario Kart 64 more than DKR.

Edit: Also THPS is by far my favorite sports title for the 64, can't believe I forgot when originally filling mine out.
  • Fuck, I totally forgot about Winback. As a shooter that game is miles better than GoldenEye so I'm gonna have to change that.

Jone made some great points about DKR up there and I definitely agree with everything he said. Few things that are better about MK64, though:

The level design in MK64 is more memorable - the tracks are more interesting and diverse, and they really suit the items and racing style of the game.

It's also a much much much better 3-4 player game (in DKR you can play two player adventure so that's a toss up). In fact I rarely play DKR with more than 2 people unless we are playing the Fire Mountain Battle Mode.

I have found you can get more creative with the use of items in Mario Kart 64, though I prefer the power-up system in DKR to the "randomosity/feed the poor" system in MK64. The biggest thing is the ability to use most MK64 items as a shield - when playing against equally skilled and strategically minded players it turns the game into something more than a racing romp.
