Crazy Donkey Kong Comp Glitch UPDATED with video

So I was messing around with DKCC and decided I wanted to try and have a gameover. With 50 lives and only 5 minutes, I thought it might be impossible. Well, after some thinking I found a good spot to kill myself In under 5 seconds of spawning. I was able to get a gameover and the game continued from the start up screen. It was the usual screen with donkey jamming on the boom box. After that I was able to select a file (maybe that's why there is a battery?) I even had the option of playing 2 player! After player select, both the overhead world and the stage select screen were shown. When the game started back up it was essential the same. The game clock was totaly screwed up it kepy flickering and gave an inaccurate time. A few objects were noticible discolored as well. It was freaking awesome.

Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Never even thought about doing that. Sweet.
  • Thats sweet. You should do up a video for it.

I thought about doing a video of it, but who would want to see me kill myself 50 times? lol. I guess I could speed up that part and get to the good stuff. I will try and make a video soon.

I third this idea! That was my first thought. Please do it, it'd be awesome.

Haha alright I'll try and do it tomorrow.

  • This sounds interesting. I look forward to seeing this.
  • Alright a made an extremely crappy video. I would recommend skipping forward to around 6:00 if you want to see what happens.

  • I tested it earlier, and the sound test code works on the select file screen. Unfortunately the game still seems to run out of time after a while, even if the timer's glitched.
  • Thanks for posting the video! But, you ended the video before you got to the cave... what are the "crazy glitches" that happen in the cave level?

Yeah sorry I couldn't make it more than 10 minutes. It's really nothing too special. There are just a few discolorations in some of the textures. If enough people are interested I'll try a round two. I know it's an eye sore watching the video and I apologize for that. I didn't really have any other way of filming. In the future I plan on making better videos but I have to stick with what I have for now.

Nah, it's not that big of a deal. I was just curious, you don't have to do a round 2. Thanks for the info.
  • Thanks for doing the video! For some strange reason this makes me want a DKCC that much more!
  • You've given me some ideas.

    *boots up ROM*

EDIT: Aww, it seems codes for the actual copy of DKC do not work on the Competition Cartridge. I wanted to somehow find a way to beat the game. =P
  • That was my next question - can you save your progress on the cart and can you finish the game? I think it'd be really awesome if you can, since it's like 2 games in one at that point.

No there is no way to save. It only shows you the stage select screen once and there is no way to make it to a candy save station. Also, I don't believe there are any more than 10 levels on the cartridge. I've heard that you can freeze the time with a play action device. When you finish all the levels the game just freezes.

  • Ah, that sucks. Still a cool glitch though.
  • I decided I'd try to save a state at Candy's save point on the finished version of DKC, then rename the save state to match the Competition Cartridge's file name. Then I loaded that state on the CC and I saw Candy's area for a second, then the screen faded out into black with glitchy colors and "ABCDEF" at the bottom. Then I appeared at the intro screen with Candy's music playing, and when I got to the file select screen, my file was actually there. I tried loading it and the game froze. Interesting.

I also tried the opposite: saved a state in Jungle Hijinx on CC, then loaded the state with the real DKC. The result? The sound of a metal barrel and a black screen. Heh.
