Mario All Stars Wii: UNPLAYABLE DUE TO LAG!

This game has been sitting on a shelf unplayed since the day I bought it, so just the other night I thought it would be fun to revisit some of these older classics. So I popped the disc in and I was surprised at how rusty I was at first. So I tried another title, again, I kept dieing and my timing seemed off. I suspected lag immediately and it turns out it was lag afterall! The lag in these games is awful and completely ruined the fun for me with this set.

So I tested out all four of my controllers on the Wii:

-WIi remote tilted sideways - lots of lag, unplayable (wireless)

-Classic controller - lots of lag, unplayable (wireless)

-Classic Controller Pro - lots of lag, unplayable (wireless)

-Gamecube controller - minimal lag, playable, but controller button set-up is awkward and d-pad is to too small.. (physically plugged into Wii)

So I ordered this:

Does anyone else use this product or something similar? It is probbably the only way I'll be able to enjoy this game and other older platform titles I presume, seeing as how I no longer have an NES or SNES and have no intention to buy one in the future - too many gaming systems, as it is

  • Ya know it could just be your tv causing the lag...modern tvs are known to have a thing called "input lag" This differs from input to input.
  • Buy the SNES version. Problem solved
  • I noticed the same thing and thought it was just me. the controls just aren't as tight as SMB on the NES. i also never like that they didnt give the option to play with the original graphics, the updated sprites are nice but being able to go 8 bit if you wanted to would have been a nice feature.
  • As others said, it may be your TV... changing it into "Game Mode" can sometimes solve the problem. If not, maybe go into the settings manually. That being said, it also may be the actual game. There's quite a few games out there that have a natural lag that can really throw off your timing from any generation of gaming.

As JD says, just grab the SNES version. That one is great.
  • You can't play with the original graphics because it's basicly just a s.n.e.s. emulator running the super mario all-stars rom.

I know that it is just a release of the snes rom but even on the snes cart i am sure they could have squeezed it onto the cart. and with the wii release being for a 25 anniversarry something about not being able to play it as it was originally intended just seems wrong

Yeah, I always thought it was just a cheap cash-in celebration.

To "squeeze" it onto the cart is not as simple as you make it out to be. They'd have to either stil have to original asm source code or dissasemble it. Then they'd have to reprogram the game again to use a completely different graphics mode on snes (since you have to run it on a snes emulator). Considering people with 6502 asm code knowledge aren't as easy to find anymore...that might prove a challenge.

I GUESS another way they could've done it is by having the emulator look at ram alot and basicly "replace" every sprite with the correct one...but this introduces at least a couple of headaches.

Another easier way is to just have a nes emulator AND a snes emulator...and have the games selectable depending on what you want.

The best way would've been to just reprogram the games in say...C with alot of attention to keeping the physics correct etc. This is 100% possible but takes alot of work. I fully agree however that for Mario's 25th anniversary they kinda took the lazy route.

  • Nope it's not the TV, while LCD does create lag, it is not as noticeable as the wireless controller lag exhibited with this game.

I tested out four controllers, three were wireless and one was plugged in (ie: gamecube controller). The Gamecube controller controlled the game without noticeable lag.

The lag issue is a known problem with this Wii game. There is a lot of good info about it online. This is how I discovered info about this retroport controller adapter.
  • Unplayable on the Wii IMO.
  • I brought this up back when it came out. I guarantee you he is right and it is not tv lag but a badly designed emulated port of the snes game. I never took it far enough to test all four ways to play he did, but I ran it against the legit cart on a CRT and my LCD tv at the time and they both ran equally like crap. I thought at first I was sucking due to rust but it really was the game itself after that test so I sold it. Basically to me it is like you hit the button and the reaction is delayed by a fraction of a second so my timing was shot causing endless deaths but it did not happen with the real cart on both styles of tv.
  • I'll report my findings here when I get the adapter

    bingo!

I don't own an SNES anymore and it will work perfect with this new adapter.

    BINGO!

  • To the OP: I just use my Gamecube controller or my PS2 controller (with the help of a GC controller converter). I never thought of using the SNES converter, but I guess you could also use one of those hori snes gamecube controllers too if you can find some.

Me too. They could have at least put in the All Stars with Mario World in it. There's no reason why they couln't fit a 2mb file (Okay maybe 5 if you count the emulator) on a dang DVD disk.

Actually, funny you should mention, I've been working on a graphics hack that would replace all the 16 bit sprites into the original 8-bit ones. I know there was already a hack for this, but all they did was just replaced the ground textures mainly and since I haven't seen anything else done to it, I decided to take a crack at it.

    Here's my progress: http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/2192/ht124231231234.png

  • allstars has always had shit controls even on snes. That's why we stick to nes orignals. When did this become news?
  • LOL im on the very last level of Super Mario Bros for this version and cannot get past 8-3 because of the lag! have been trying for weeks! Same thing with Super Mario Bros Japanese version (II) on the disc aswell, stuck due to lag in a very late level in the game.. JUST WANT TO BEAT IT FOR GOD SAKES! omg...

so sad to see such a great title get slammed due to .1 second lag crap... mario deserves better!
  • Idk what you guys are talking about with lag I get no lag on the Wii with it. And yes, I'm using the Wii mote.
  • I knew id find you in here claiming there is no lag!! I think your senses are off due to alcohol

I think you're right... Once you consume alcohol your body and mind lags, and when you play a game that lags, it causing the player to be fully synchronized with the game-- hence why Adam is better at video games than I am since I don't drink.

We know your secret now, Adam.

While consuming alcohol does affect your reaction times, if something is like 2nd nature to you, such as gaming, music, etc., you can perform without any issues. Of course, there's always a limit to that, and once you go over it, you're done for lol.

And no, that's not my secret
  • ^ I guess we'll never know!
  • It is a shame that corporate Nintendo doesn't care enough about their fans nor Mario to do a proper 25th anniversary tribute. There should have been the original NES versions, the SNES All-Star versions, and updated Wii graphics versions included on the disc. I regret buying the game because it reinforces lazy and exploitative behavior on the part of Nintendo. I probably wouldn't have bought the damn game in the first place if it wasn't for it being a limited time deal or whatever. Eh... screw corporate Nintendo.

They even messed up the " limited edition " by putting out a second run of copies

I didn't know that.  Lame, Nintendo.  Very lame.
  • As to the original point of this thread, yes, I've got a retroport. It's fantastic. I use it for the Gameboy Player to give it more natural controls. It's perfect!
