Well, here is a starter score for me...
BENIHANA 165,600
ETA:
As you can see here:

I could see this turning into a marathon run for the winner if the game never get's any harder than level 50 or such...
Guess I need to practice some more...

Does the game actually get harder once you get up to these ridicules levels? Or is it one of those, once you get so far, it is hard...but not progressively harder.

After the 2nd or 3rd iteration of the levels, it stays the same for difficulty. Sometimes even easier if you're quick enough, and sometimes not all the random flying suiciders come out. Once the big moth type critters come out, the difficulty stops increasing. I looped the score on my last life, and don't remember (or have a screen shot) of my final score.
I also really hate the controls for this game.
Yup, the difficulty stops increasing at the point you mentioned (when the moths appear). Both the score and the round
number roll over. The score obviously rolls at a million and the round number rolls at 99. (It goes to zero and then one again, with no change in gameplay)
This can be an easy game, once you get the hang of it. Two people on Twin Galaxies (myself included) have scored 5 million points before (Andrew Furrer has the record at 5,391,500). It only takes like 2-3 hours, if I remember correctly.
I agree that the controls are wierd, but I like this game anyway. Loads of fun to play. Too bad the other Donkey Kong games overshadow it, because I think this game deserves more attention than it gets.
I'd like to suggest 2 options:
Option 1: Score attempt ends when you roll the score. Rolling the score earlier in the game takes precedence in rank.
Option 2: Score attempt ends when you reach level 99. You must take a picture every time you're rolling the score.

Video is too much asking for this contest, but if anyone wants to record himself to validate a score over 1,000,000, that will work.

Let's go with Option 2 on this one. We will allow multiple rolls of the score, but once someone gets to level 99, that's where the score attempt ends.
So i was wondering what strategy you guys use ? clearing all the insects or running off DK ? or a combo of both?
The first time I used it when I rolled the score, I used it at level 30 or 35.
The level with the vines going across, fire and jump straight up, when the caterpillars get in front of your line of fire, hold off, kill the bug, resume, and watch out for DK throwing his coconut at you.
The level with the middle platform cut, I go left, jump up to the top and over quickly to start firing. When the bug that explodes comes down, I go over and fire at him twice while standing directly under him, and if the red / blue suiciders come out, I try to take care of them right away as well. Sometimes they don't show up, other times they do, sometimes I can get DK stuffed up before they come out.
The other level I use the same method, though I'll willingly jump down a platform if needed. Just hope you can do it before the caterpillars come out, because then it becomes a pain.

Those exploding bugs kill me more than anything else in the game
I always just avoid shooting them. They're slow and usually leave you alone. When they fly at you, just jump down and run around them.

Thanks for the advice Tom coming from a TG record holder I will use that to my advantage
I know it is measly, but I LOVE this game and it is my personal best!
Deal with it...

I had every intention of milking this stage, but trying to do so caused me to die in the first few seconds
