What are your thoughts on Paladin's Quest and Robotrek?

I beat PQ last month. I started out pleasantly surprised, but by the mid-point it become a bit annoying and more of a chore to play/finish than it was a pleasurable experience. The battles seem to go on forever and the interface was a little clunky. It did some nice things, but overall, eh. I can see why most people pass over it.

Robotrek on the other hand I am digging! Call me crazy, but I'm enjoying it a bit more than I did Super Mario RPG (which I finally beat earlier this year). There's just something cool about Robotrek. Customizing robots is a great idea, and the battles, unlike PQ, don't drag on forever.

Anywho, what do you guys think of PQ and RT?

  • I liked both of them. It's been a very, very long time since I've played Paladin's Quest, so I don't remember much of it, but I know I enjoyed it. Back when PQ came out, there was a very small selection of RPGs, so I played whatever I could get. I'm glad that I decided to play this just because it was an RPG and not just from looking at the back of the box.

Robotrek is one of those gems that seems to be relatively unknown. That's a shame, because it's fun and unique. I was able to play it again a few years ago, so it's a little fresher in my mind. The robot customization aspect is definitely interesting, might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it definitely sets it apart from other RPGs. There is a lot of creativity in the story and little puzzles you encounter in the game. The music is pretty good, too. Definitely worth playing.
  • I tried getting into Paladin's Quest twice in the last few months, but it just wasn't for me. The battles just seem to drag on for way to long, even in the early stages of the game.
  • Back in the day I used play through Paladin's Quest about once a year. I loved the weird art direction and musical scores (especially that one sad/desolate sounding track late in the game). It truely looked like an alien world with all the bizarre enemies and environments, and some of the magic attack effects were pretty neat too. I would always choose the same characters for my final team (the robot and mercenary that appear towards the end) and would max out my magic attacks before plowing though the final boss (which I always loved the look of). I don't remember any other rpg or game that had such a totally peculiar feel to it.

It was kind of a beast to get through though...
  • Still waiting on playing Paladin's Quest, but I enjoyed Robotrek quite a bit (beaten it twice). The translation is a bitch sketchy now and then, but overall it's a pretty good game imo. Definitely needed to use the item combo chart for the game to figure out all of the combinations and what to make. One of these days maybe I'll play it through again.
  • I couldn't get into Paladins quest, it played like a crappier version of Dragon Warrior/Quest to me.

While on the topic of the less-popular SNES RPG's, play Lufia 2 and 1, in that order, if you haven't yet. You won't be disappointed.
  • ^ I LOVED LUFIA II! Lufia 1 was decent/solid, but II is up there with SNES' very best, and I'm not talking JUST RPGs either! I played L1 first, and am glad I did. I like to start with the worst game in a series first (and earlier release date as well). After playing L2, I imagine it would have been very difficult to put up with L1's flaws had I got the L2 first L1 second route.

Still working my way through Robotrek. Really enjoying it. A really good quirky little RPG. Pretty unique... you can see the Quintet blood in this one... has "talking animals" and even a dog named Turbo. The text is in the same font as Soul Blazer and IoG. Really neat stuff...
  • Never played PQ but I liked Robotrek a lot when I got it back in the day. It's been 15+ years since I've played it so it's not too fresh in my mind but I had fun with it. I remember being disappointed with the 2nd and 3rd robots though. I had hoped they would be better and stronger than the first but they were literally clones of the first. Yea, you could customize your robots but since they were about all the same I only ever used one. Minor gripe, but still overall a great game.

EDIT:  Oh and by the way Lufia 2 is one of my favorite games of all time spanning all platforms.
