PayPal Needs Personal Information

This is not a rant against PayPal, so please do not let this thread spiral into such talk. I am simply seeking advice and seeing if anyone else has had this problem before.

So, I log in to PayPal today and they said they needed to confirm some information. I type in a couple of things and then it says they couldn't verify the information. Now, I need to send a copy of my photo ID, proof of address, and proof of my SSN. Have any of you encountered this problem? They say it is part of their normal security check, but I don't know why I was picked to get checked or if I did something to incur this treatment. I have perfect feedback on eBay and my last transaction was actually sending my entire balance (very small amount) to my bank account.

All that to ask: if this has happened to you, how did you go about resolving it? I would much rather prefer never sending them any documents of this nature since they aren't a bank or anything of that sort.

Update: See post #15

  • sounds sketchy, call paypal before you do anything, is there any Malware on your computer?
  • You shouldnt ever have to send anything to Paypal. Its definitely phishing for you.
  • I had this happen to me last week . I just printed out the fax cover letter and faxed it with a copy of my driver's license . It's official, they are just going through their accounts and making sure everything is looking good .

My account was put back to normal about 2 days after faxing the info .

Never give this info out. Why does paypal need your SSN? I wouldn't send anything and if this is legit then I am done with Paypal.

Just curious, but did they ask you for all three as well or just your license?

To the others saying it is phising, I logged in to PayPal and received this message. There was no email message concerning it. I just logged in and was locked down.

  • I had to go through this a few years ago when i changed my acct. from personal to business, and i was doing more than 500/mo in sales. they asked me for ID, I provided it. as i recall i was still able to access my account through an ATM, I could check my balance but not withdraw
  • Yeah I'd just do your drivers license . No way they getting my SSN . They put limited access until I did so, and it was all easy enough .
  • This happened to me a couple months ago after sending payment for my Action 52 cart. Everything is official. I scanned my driver's license over to them, and my account was back in working order maybe a couple hours after it came up.
  • I had the same problem last week. I ordered a brady jersey from nfl.com for my girlfriend and put her adress as shipping adress.paypal thought is was a fraud. My paypal and credit card got suspended and just sent in my driver's license. Now everything is ok.
  • Ok, so I just called in an apparently the IRS is now requiring that all PayPal users have their SSN and date of birth on file. The lady I was talking to wanted me to verbally tell her my SSN over the phone. I said no thanks.

I think I may just try uploading my driver's license and see if that clears everything up.
  • This happened to my friend in the past. I don't think he ever bothered to fix it though, as he got locked down for making too much through selling D2 items. I think he just ended up making a new paypal.. As the others said, it is pretty simple to fix AFAIK, but maybe it's different for certain Countries/States.
  • If I heard correctly its a dept of homeland security measure to establish direct ownership over accounts. If you don't comply, they take your account privileges. I had to do it about a year ago when I first sold something on ebay. If you're really concerned it's a hoax call paypal support and they'll confirm or deny it.

They tend to ask for this information if you get a debit card or sell items. It's nothing you did, just a compliance thing.
  • I can see paypal being required to collect the information, but geeze, if I saw something like this, I would definitely think scam right away. Paypal should reconsider their method of collecting the info. I'm suprised I haven't seen this yet, but I suspect that I will soon.
  • Update: I sent in a copy of my driver's license, and everything is fine now. I'm not sure about that pushy lady who wanted my SSN, but I'm not talking to her again.
