Does a top loader NES read better than an FC Twin?

Just wanted to know, because my FC twin hasn't done a great job of reading a few games of mine.

  • The top loader is the best NES out there as far as reading games is concerned. Only problem with it is the video output.
  • Masons video on building a video amp and where to solder it to the board of the toploader is by far the easiest guide to follow, and COMPLETELY solves any problems if you're a person who runs your Toploader directly into your TV. Otherwise if you run it through a VCR and then into your TV you'll have no problems anyway.

Seriously, heavily consider modding your top loader, so long as you dont break the lifted pin, you can restore it back to factory if you want. It took maybe $10 in parts from radioshack (only because I had to buy full bags of parts) and a couple hours of my time to get the logistics down and build the amp. I'm no pro soldering guy either, any amateur like myself can do it.
  • I know some games won't play on the FC Twin are those the ones your having problems with?I have an FC Twin I haven't used in forever but I do remember having some games that wouldn't start up due to the system not being compatible with them. The toploader is the best version of the NES you can get imo.
  • My FC Twin had issues reading a couple of games, but those same games won't work on my toaster either, even after the pins were cleaned and the 72-pin was replaced. Basically, asides from those, the system has been good for reading games.

Thoroughly clean your games with Brasso and rubbing alcohol, disable the NES10 chip in a NES toaster, and live happily ever after.  All my Toploader does is sit around and look pretty in my gameroom.  I've considered modding it to remove the lines, but I have no problems from my quartet of NES toasters so I figure why bother.
  • Not even a comparison, the FC Twin not only barely works but also deathgrips your games. I have been using my top loader lately with great results.

I do think that the FC Twin is a good SNES substitute, though.
  • AV Famicom with convertor?
  • Retron3 is by far the best clone system out there for NES and SNES (SNES side is 95% perfect emulation). Genesis is similar all across the baord and 1 hasnt really stood out as better then the rest, and believe me, Ive tried em all.

EDIT - and for those that dont know Retron 3 outputs S-Video and SNES and Genny, and it looks glorious.  Plus the SNES side being damn near perfect its hard not to love it.
  • Considering the toploader will play ANY game released for the NES, and the FC Twin is a clone machine, I'd say the Toploader is superior.
  • Yeah, I know my Paper Boy will read, but wont react. Duck Tales use to work, but now doesn't anymore. I'll be looking into a top loader pretty soon.
  • I use to have a FC Twin and that thing broke after couple of months owning it. Top Loader is probably the best system to read NES games.
  • I love my FC Twin, it pretty much reads everything just the same or as good as a top-loader NES... EXCEPT the few games that aren't compatible for the FC Twin. No amount of cleaning is gonna help a compatibility issue.
