DSi XL no longer turns on

I've never really messed around with the DSi or the XL so I'm hoping to get a general direction before ordering random parts hoping it works.

Some details:

We've had the XL since close to release so it's seen a fair amount of play.

Was working up until it died. Was in sleep mode with the lid closed, when the lid was opened it acted like the battery died.

When I plugged it up the light came on as normal for charging and stayed on for a normal amount of time.

The system is completely unresponsive. Hitting the power button does nothing, There is no sound, no flicker or anything. The only response I can get out of it is the light coming on when I plug it up.

Hopefully it ends up being something simple to fix, my g/f is going crazy without her Pokemon haha. Thanks!

  • Battery might be completely toasted. I just tested out my XL, and you can not power up the system with out a battery.

Or your charger may not be functioning 100%.
  • pull the battery and unplug it. Hit power a few times to flush the caps of stored power. replace battery and plug in, try again. That would be "easiest best case scenario". Plus I've seen that before.
  • I'd guess it's either a dead battery or a burnt fuse.

I've seen that too. Requires specialist equipment to replace the fuses. They are soooooooo tiny on ds systems.

They're just 0603 fuses IIRC. All you would need is a pair of precision tweezers and an iron.

i couldnt do one I had that was bad on a DS Lite.  To small for me.
  • Update:

Bought a replacement battery from eBay, seller took over a week to get it to me and ended up sending a smaller DSi battery instead.

Unless I'm mistaken, shouldn't this battery still be enough to power on the XL if it was working? I was able to wedge it in to where I could plug up the XL and the charging light stayed on, left it for an hour and it still wouldn't turn on. I'm thinking the system itself is dead.

Anyone know a good person or place for repair?
  • Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but if you plugged the charger directly to the system while the battery is removed, then instead of trying to charge the battery then using that power to turn it on, it should just power the system straight from the charge cable, right? Try that. I'm hoping it's either the battery or the charging adapter and not anything on the main board. It's probably cheap to replace the fuse, but could be a pain.

  • I don't think any of the DS systems will power on without a battery, even if the charger is connected.
