Finally.

Yeah,

Zelda 2 is my favorate game, I play it weekly.  And I've been trying to beat it without dying for years and years.  Tonight was the night.  Got through it in just under three hours with no deaths.  Got all the additional free lives, p-bags, etc.  Didn't use any cheap stuff (like skipping when an enemy hits you on a mandatory square).  I don't make topics often, or ever really, but I'm elated and just had to share.

Yup,

  • Well done, mate! I may have done that years ago myself when I was a kid (don't remember, but I do know I played the hell out of that game), but I know I couldn't do it now without a ton of practice first. Congrats!
  • Congratulations! I've only beaten Zelda 2 once and it seems like it'd be pretty tough to no-death! Heck, almost every NES game is hard to no-death. That's a huge accomplishment and it's completely new-topic-worthy. How long have you been playing it weekly for?
  • ^ I would say weekly (with some exceptions) for just a year or two with the intent on a no-death completion. But I played it a ton as a kid, then I got an NES back with Zelda 2 when I started collecting at age 16 (I'm 28 now) and played it extensively throughout the years.
  • Wow! So quite a while. I admire your persistence.
  • Wow...... I love that game, but I've only beaten it twice. No deaths? That's just amazing. I'd love to watch a full playthrough video of that. Heck, I'd watch even if you died, just to see your technique!
  • wow! I mean, WOW!!!
  • One of my true favorites as well. Mind boggling achievement. I wish there were video footage! Is there?
  • What a feat!

    x2

video or it didn't happen hahaha

Seriously though, this game is rediculously hard in some spots and takes getting used to.  I hate some of the enemies that just keep re-appearing that are hard to kill.  I have never beat the game.  I've only gotten about 2/3rds through it and stopped playing.  I've seen speedrun videos of it and that's about the extent I want to do this game with.  There are just some gamers that have mad skills.

Did you use a game genie at all or was it pure skill?
  • Your a beast! I've never even beat the game,I usually get to frustrated and shut it off! That is easily the hardest Zelda game and no deaths?? Your a deadly p1mp.
  • ^ Ha! No! No Game Genie.

I didn't film it but I would like to do it again and film it with a commentary, but how would you even go about doing such a thing? I would want it to be nice, so I wouldn't want it to be just videotaping the screen. I feel like that would be jarring.
  • Holy crap dude congrats. That game is hard as hell. I've beaten this game three times. On the NES, GBA, and recently on the 3DS. Every time I play it, it kicks my ass. It takes me three lives just to make it to the final palace.. You are a beast
  • That's quite an achievement, congrats! There are a few easy-to-die spots in there, no doubt! Did you have any major close calls that you'd care to share?

Also, did you beat the shadow using the trick?

I think you should go for a speed run.
  • I've never really played the game, but that sounds like a great feat. Congrats!

Now do it without getting hit.
  • Wow, still working on beating this game... period. Great Job!

I came close to dying a few times but was resourceful, I had some trouble in castle six and then again right at the end.

Yeah, I used the "trick," and I knew that would come up.  I don't know how not to use it, if you know what I mean?  In order to not use it you would have to purposefully jump around, you know?  It's a weird issue.  I've beaten the game without it, of course, but for this run I used it.

I have a tech saavy friend who is going to help me make a video this summer.  Gotta stayed warmed up!
