How long do YOU wait before filing non-payment?

So I've had some people put me on hold before and I can deal with that. However I've got a 0 member who just bought a game and 5 days later still hasn't paid. I sent an invoice and then a message 3 days later. I sent another this morning but expect it to go unanswered.

I'd hate to file a nonpayment claim but they aren't leaving me much option. I decided to give them a full week in case they're out of town or something. I just wanted to know the general rule of thumb before doing that. I don't want a new member to get a bad first impression. So I figured why not ask you guys, I know I'm not the only person to deal with a non-reponsive buyer.

  • Just make sure when you list the auction you say payment is due within 3 days(i use 3 days, some people expect immediate payment which can be hard if not impossible for some potential bidders who might be working when the auction ends). If within 3 days of winning they have not paid or at least contacted you telling you why they have not paid or when they will, file your non-payment claim as soon as possible. Help us weed out a few more of these deadbeat bidders.
  • General rule of thumb for me is EFF 0 feedback non-payers. Immediately upon seeing a 0 feedback bidder has won my auction I message them and ask their intentions to pay for the auction. I don't mess around. I think you should already have filed a case. You're losing money because of them. They can still pay and close the case. I wouldn't wait any longer. File now because you are still gonna have to wait 3-4 days to close it yourself. In the future set very clear expectations on your payment expectations. I set a payment due in 48 hours. That's plenty of time IMO. No Money now = No bid.
  • eBay makes you wait 7 days (I think) before you can open a case, that is how long I wait.

Also, check out the buyer requirement settings if you haven't already. There are many things you can do to help prevent deadbeat bidders from winning your stuff. Requiring immediate payment for BINs is one of my favorites
