TG16 Recommendations

So I bought turbo grafx at Pax east earlier this year and it has just been sitting collecting dust, so i figure I should probably actually get some games for the thing.

What would be some games that you guys would recommend to start out with?

Already know I'm going to get Super star soldier and blazing lasers at some point.

  • Since I'm assuming you don't have the CD addon and just a stock TG16 I will mention HuCards only. The first game I'd recommend is Air Zonk, which is my favorite HuCard. I'd also recommend Cadash which is an excellent port of the arcade game, Legendary Axe and Bonks Revenge. As far as other games the TG16 is a system that is loaded with shmups, there's a lot of good ones on the system as well.
  • I do have a CD add-on, but it smells like smoke and I am terrified of plugging it in.
  • I would add Devil's Crush to Dan's list as well. Alien Crush is good too, but DC blows it out of the water.

    ...wait...Alien Crush...Devil's Crush...AC...DC.........!!! WOAH!

Do you have the system card for it as well?
  • My favorite TG16 game is "New Adventure Island ".

If you like Adventure Island games , its the best version ever made .
  • If you like shmups, I'd grab up Dead Moon, Sidearms, and Dragon Spirit. I'm a big fan of Bloody Wolf and Ninja Spirit as well, Splatterhouse pretty much goes without saying.
  • Pick up the following:

Ninja Spirit: it is one of the greatest ninja games of all time.

Military Madness: the father of Advanced Wars and a great turn-based military in its own right.

New Adventure Island: awesome addition to the series.

Bonk (I-III): great games and the TG-16's mascot.

Air Zonk:  Bonk's shmup ancestor that is both fun to play and delightful to behold.

Legendary Ax I & II; kickass hack n' slash platforming.

Devil's Crush: one of THE greatest pinball games of all time.

    Splatterhouse: *see SamSpade's comment above.

There. That should get you started!
  • I'm astounded no one has mentioned Neutopia. It's an awesome Zelda clone, there's a sequel too I'm pretty sure, but I've only played the first. Very fun game if you like to bomb the shit outta walls and like your hacking and slashing top down. It basically is Zelda with a different name, check that one out.

I thought about mentioning it, the problem is unless you have a Turbo Booster Plus, CD-ROM add on or Duo, you have to use passwords to save. That's just brutal.
  • I can think of some from what I used to have. Ninja Spirit, Bonk 1-3, Air Zonk, Bomberman and Bomberman 93, Neutopia 1+2, Klax, Fantasy Zone, Alien Crush and Devils Crush(both are weird pinball), Blazing Lasers, Galaga 90, Cadash, Final Lap Twin(racing w/rpg elements), Raiden, R-Type, Shockman, Bravoman, Side Arms, Splatterhouse, Super Star Soldier, Turrican, and various other arcade ports too.

I could mention more that are on CD but you seem to think cig smoke stank means it won't work or worse.
  • I do have the system card as well, it had a bunch of stuff with it when i got, arcade stick, turbo tap, stuff like that.

Ninja spirit is another one I definitely want to get, watched a review of it from clan of the grey wolf.
  • Yeah, I'm only 3 games away from a full set, and for only having 94 games in its library, the good-to-shit ratio is pretty remarkable. So many good games. I'd go with treismac's list a few posts up (which is a killer list, btw) then add in both Neutopia's and you'll have all your bases covered.
  • Ohya, the Turbografx-16 is one of my all time favourites! Here is a list of my top ten games:

  • I definitely second Military Madness. It's actually better than advance wars in many ways.
